CHEM 2301, Fall 2018 Page 1 Overview Organic chemistry is foundational to a broad spectrum of scientific fields, including, but not limited to, chemistry, biology, materials science, and health science. Organic chemistry focuses on how compounds interact, and these molecular interactions provide the foundation for further study in a variety of disciplines. CHEM 2301 is the first semester in a two-semester organic chemistry curriculum at the University of Minnesota. During the course, we will start with a discussion of structure and bonding, followed by substitution and elimination reactions. We will discuss a variety of functional groups and their production and reactions, as well as the reactivity of alkenes, alkynes, and radicals. At the end of the semester, we will cover mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Course Materials All course materials are available for purchase from U of M Bookstores in Coffman Union and St. Paul Student Center. Required Textbook: Organic Chemistry, 10 th edition, Francis A. Carey and Robert M. Giuliano, McGraw- Hill, 2017 Online homework code: Connect access code (packaged with textbook or available separately for purchase from publisher’s website) Recommended Student solutions manual: Student Study Guide/Solutions Manual, Neil T.
