OverviewOrganicchemistryisfoundationaltoabroadspectrumofscientificfields,including,butnotlimitedto,chemistry,biology,materialsscience,andhealthscience.Organicchemistryfocusesonhowcompoundsinteract,andthesemolecularinteractionsprovidethefoundationforfurtherstudyinavarietyofdisciplines.CHEM2301isthefirstsemesterinatwo-semesterorganicchemistrycurriculumattheUniversityofMinnesota.Duringthecourse,wewillstartwithadiscussionofstructureandbonding,followedbysubstitutionandeliminationreactions.Wewilldiscussavarietyoffunctionalgroupsandtheirproductionandreactions,aswellasthereactivityofalkenes,alkynes,andradicals.Attheendofthesemester,wewillcovermassspectrometry,infraredspectroscopy,andnuclearmagneticresonancespectroscopy.

GoalsAsacomponentofyourundergraduateeducationhereattheUniversityofMinnesota,thiscoursewillofferyoutheopportunitytoidentify,define,andsolveproblemsandwillprovideastrongfoundationforthemasteryofknowledgeinthechemicalsciences.BecauseCHEM2301isdesignedtopreparestudentsforfuturecoursesinchemistry,whenstudentsleaveCHEM2301,theyshouldhavethefollowingskills.
