FTF Day 14

• Feb 28, 2012

• HW: Folder Check quiz on Thursday.

• Topic: Review Tests, Discuss homework policy, start chemical equations

• Questions: What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?

Activities

• Turn in Section Review Ch. 10 right now.

• Review Tests

• Discuss homework policy

• Start chemical equations

Law of Conservation of Mass

Mass can neither be created nor destroyed

In a physical change or chemical reaction, mass is conserved.

The reactants must equal the products.

Vocabulary

• Reactants – substances present at the start of the reaction

• Products – substances produced by the reaction (present after the reaction)

FTF Day 15

• Feb 29, 2012

• HW: balancing equations (Thursday), folder check quiz (Thursday)

• Topics: Balancing equations

• Questions: identify the symbols in this equation:

CH4(L) + O2 (G) CO2 (G) + H2O (G)

What is a skeleton equation?

– Includes the formulas of the reactants and the formulas of the products, but might not be balanced.

– Useful for describing what happens in a chemical reaction

– Not useful for describing quantities of reactants and product.

Balanced Equations

atoms in reactants = atoms in products

FTF Day 1

Staple papers from old folder and start a new table of contents. (You may want to keep day 14 and 15)

March 2, 2012

HW: PhET lab Balancing Chemical Equations (Due Monday), Interpreting graphics (Tuesday)

Topics: Balancing Chemical Equations

Questions:

1. What is the difference between a skeleton equation and a balanced equation?

2. Balance this equation: Al + HCl AlCl3 + H2

Activities

• Start a new folder (keep day 14 and 15 in folder) and a new table of contents.

– Keep old papers to study for final!!

• Work on “PhET lab Balancing Chemical Equations”.

• Interpreting graphics activity

• Start Reading Ch. 11.3

FTF Day 2

• March 5, 2012

• HW: PhET Lab Due today, Interpreting Graphics Due Tomorrow. LAB WEDNESDAY

• Topics: Types of Chemical Reactions

• Question:

– Balance this equation

C8H18 + O2 CO2 + H20

Activities

• Turn in PhET Lab worksheet

• Take notes on types of chemical Rxns

FTF Day 3

• March 6, 2012

• HW: LAB tomorrow, wear proper clothing.

• Topic: Types of reactions

• Question:

1. Balance this equation.

2. What type of reaction is this?

Na(s) + H2O(l) ----> NaOH(aq) + H2(g)

Activities

• 4 minutes of quiet studying

• Turn in “Interpreting Graphics”

• Watch demos

• Discuss tomorrow’s lab

Turn your paper sideways and make this chart.

Type of Reaction

Reactants Predicted products

Observations Balanced chemical equation

Combination Rxns

A + B AB

2Fe + O2 2FeO

Single Replacement Rxn

A + BC B + AC

Pay attention to which parts of each compound are Cations / Anions.

Double Replacement Rxns

AB + CD AD + CB

Pay attention to which parts of each compound are Cations / Anions.

Combustion Rxns

• Anything that reacts with O2.

• Usually a Hydrocarbon is a reactant

• Usually CO2 and H2O are products.

Single/Double Replacement Rxns More active elements WILL replace less active elements.

Less active elements will NOT replace more active elements.

Examples:

Li + NaCl Na + LiCl2

Mg + NiF2 No Rxn

No FTF Today

• Instructions:

1. Take out notes Ch 11.2 and a pencil

2. Put backpacks/books at the front of the room.

3. Get goggles and a lab apron.

4. Return to desk and wait quietly for further instructions.

FTF Day 4

• March 19, 2012

• HW: Turn in Lab and Practice Wksh tomorrow

QUIZ Wednesday

• Topic: review reactions

• Questions: none

Activities

• For ONE type of chemical reaction do the following:

– Must: create a poster
