CHEMICAL WARFARE SERVICEFIELD MATERIEL DATA
RESTR1CTEI
JULY 1, 1943
FOREWORD
These data supplement theChemical WarfareServiceSupply Catalog,July 1, 1941.
In compiling these data, ail articles of Chemical Warfare Servicemateriel, equipment, accessories, and supplies have not beenincluded. The rapid mobility of field units has necessitated a separate catalog, whichwould be light and compact, yet contain all the pertinent informa-tion of C.W.S. materiel as to nomenclature, description, use, packing, shipping, repair, and basis of issue.
Items in these data follow, as closely as possible, the nomenclatureunderwhich theyhavebeen standardizedas recorded in the Book of Stand-ards, Chemical WarfareService, andin the Minutes of the Chemical War-fare Technical Committee meetings which, in most cases have been ap-proved by the Adjutant General.
Information of each item, sufficient to identify it on inspection, isgivenfor the purpose of distinguishing it from others in a similar cate-gory. A description or information appearing in these data is not to be
terpreted as an operating directive in any case.
Information and logistical data on the unit weights and cubages ofarticles have been compiled from facts received from C.W.S. Depots,Ports of Embarkationand the approved specifications and drawings cov-ering the articles; however, this should be considered only as a guide inthe preparation of transportation estimates and should not be used as acriterion by any person actually engaged in and responsible for makingshipments.
Errors in the information given herein, as well as suggestions forchanges shouldbe reported to the Chief of Chemical Warfare Service.
SECTION A'
FIRST AID
PROTECTION AND FIRST AID
When Gas is Detected or When the Gas Alarm Sounds: -
1. Stop breathing.2. Dispose of arms and headgear so they do not touch ground.3. Remove mask from carrier; place thumbs under lower head-
harness straps; and, holding facepiece, with fingers extendedabove the eyepieces, place chin in facepiece and seat head-harness, making a comfortable, air-tight seal.
4. Clear mask by placing right hand over outlet valve, crimpingthe hose with the left hand and exhaling. Only then resumenormal breathing.
5. Examine self and equipment for traces of contamination.6. Always test for gas before removing mask.
Caution;
Do not rely solely on odors for the detection of gases for the odormay be disguised, or the gas odorless. When in doubt, put onmask.
Observe direction of prevailing wind. Get upwind of gassed areaswhenever possible.
Gases are heavier than air; stay out of low places.
Care of Gas Casualties:
1. Act promptly and quietly. Be calm.2. Put mask on patient if gas is still present. If mask is on, check
for adjustment. If mask is not available, wet a handkerchiefor other cloth and have patient breath through it.
3. Keep patient at absolute rest; loosen clothing.4. Remove patient at absolute rest; loosen-clothing.5. Summon medical aid; if possible, send patient to hospital.3. Do not permit patient to smoke.7. Be guided by following chart.
