Koichi Komatsu and Yasujiro Murata

The molecular surgical approach has been shown to be applicable to preparation of an endohedral fullerene. Thus, anorifice large enough to insert an atom or molecule has been constructed on the surface of fullerene C60. The orifice has beenenlarged to a 13-membered ring by insertion of a sulfur atom on the rim, and 100% encapsulation of molecular hydrogen hasbeen attained. Then, the size reduction of the orifice, without the loss of incorporated hydrogen, and complete closure of theorifice have been achieved to afford a new endohedral fullerene, H2@C60.

902 A Facile Chemical Solution Route to ConvertBulk Cuprous Iodide into Nanoparticles

CuI nanoparticles were fabricated fromconventional CuI powders inmicrometer size. Acetonitrile was used asa dispersing agent to dissolve CuIpowders. With acetonitrile evaporated,poly-2-vinylpyrolidine (PVP) in thesolution could effectively restrict CuIparticle growth, prevent them fromaggregation, and result in the formationof CuI nanoparticles embedded in thepolymer matrix. 3þ, Er3þ Nanocrystals

LaF3 : Yb3+, Er3+ nanoparticles were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method. Thenanoparticles were well-crystallized and exhibited hexagonal structure with fine morphology, asindicated by powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and transmission electronmicroscopy. The nanocrystals present a bright-green upconversion luminescence under the 978nm excitation of a laser diode, which provides a promising upconversion phosphor foroptoelectronic or biological applications.

Intramolecular Diels−Alder reaction tandem dehydroaromatization of diene-diyne 2 under heatingand irradiating resulted in formation of benzolactone. The reaction underwent the two steps:thermochemistry and photochemistry. The intermediate was confirmed using C60 as an intermediatecatcher. This reaction apparently represents a rare example of intramolecular Diels−Alder reactiontandem dehydroaromatization of diene-diyne under mild conditions without catalyst and oxidant.
