SCIENCE STARTER

• Work silently and individually on your Science Starter• You have 3 minutes

Page 3: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

OBJECTIVES

• SWBAT–Identify the different types of

homogeneous mixtures–Identify the factors that affect

solubility

Page 4: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

AGENDA

• Science Starter•Demonstration•Worksheet

DEMONSTRATION

Page 6: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

Homogenous Mixture

• The 3 mixtures are examples of Homogenous Mixture. Homogeneous mixture being one that is uniform throughout. • Take 1 minutes to fill in the table

Transparent or Opaque

• Sugar Water – transparent• Milk – Opaque• Chalk in water - Opaque

Separate or not?

• Sugar Water – No• Milk – No• Chalk in water - Yes

Light Beams Through?

• Sugar Water - yes• Milk - yes• Chalk in water - no

TYPES OF HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE

• Sugar Water – Solution• Milk – Colloid• Chalk in water - Suspension

Physical Properties of Mixtures

• Properties of Mixture can determine what separation method to use

Page 12: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

Properties of Mixtures

•Density•Particle Size•Boiling Point•Freezing Point•Solubility

Page 13: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

Solubility

• The amount of substance that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent• This is a quantitative term

Page 14: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

Solubility

• Solution = solute in solvent• Solute = the substance

being dissolved• Solvent = the substance

doing the dissolving

Page 15: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

You Try It

• Given Sugar Water–Identify the solute–Identify the solvent–Identify the solution

Page 16: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

Example

• Sugar Water–Solvent = water–Solute = sugar–Solution = Sugar Water

Page 17: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

Degree of Solubility

• How much solute will dissolve in a certain amount of liquid at a given temperature

• Unsaturated – solution below the limit• Saturate – solution is at its limit• Supersaturate – solution that exceeds it

saturation limit

Page 18: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

SUPERSATURATED

• A Solution can exceed its saturation limit by increasing the temperature • However, the solution is not stable

and the extra solute will normally crystallized when the solution cools.

Page 19: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

SOLUBILITY CURVE

• Graph used to identify the saturation limit–On the Line – saturated–Under the line – unsaturated–Above the line - supersaturated

Page 20: CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility.

You try it

• Given the Solubility Curve for water, identify when the solution is undsaturated, saturated or supersaturated.

Solubility Curve

• The Solubility Curve may vary for different solute
