ArcelorMittal Ostrava an established producer of top quality steel products

3

The ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. company is the largest steel-making company in the Czech Republic and a part of the world‘s largest steel producer - the ArcelorMittal company.

In ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s., production of hot-rolled flat products has a long-time tradition. Manufacturing of hot-rolled strips started in 1958. Between 1997 and 1999 the production facility for manufacturing of hot-rolled strips underwent a fundamental modernization. In 1997 a slab continuous casting facility was put in operation and in 1999 a new wide-strip mill - P 1500 Stec-kel followed. Manufacturing capacity of the Steckel wide-strip mill is 1,27 mill. tons of hot-rolled wide strips per year. It was not only a substantial diversification in strips in terms of size and quality that the mill brought about. It also created conditions for further enrichment of the product range by new steel grades destined for production of hot-rolled strips.

Technology Description and Used Terminology

IntroductionDear customers,You are in receipt of an offer catalogue of hot-rolled flat products, which are produced in ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. This catalogue represents the basic offer of hot-rolled flat products and shall gradually be extended and refined in new editions through acquiring of a new technology at the wide-strip Steckel rolling mill.

Description of production technologySteel for production of flat products is produced by oxygen procedure in the 200-ton tilting tandem furnace at the Plant 13 - Steel Plant. In 2/3 the basic input raw material of the melting charge is hot metal and remaining 1/3 is steel scrap, scrap iron, sponge iron and iron ore.

Production of hot-rolled wide strips

Liquid steel is transported in ladles to the Minimill area where the steel is processed at the ladle furnace.

The following operations take place at the ladle furnace:

- temperature and chemical homogenization - steel deoxidation and accurate alloying to achieve the required chemical composition - desulphurization - reduction of non-metallic inclusions contents - adjustment of temperature to the specified casting temperature

After secondary steel processing at the ladle furnace is finished, the ladle containing treated steel is embedded in the turret and steel is cast through the tundish into the mold. At the slab, continuous caster blanks of width from 740 mm to 1575 mm and of 150 mm thickness are cast. Continuously cast blanks are cut up to pieces of max. 18 m length by fuel burner.Continuously cast blanks are transported in hot condition by a roller conveyer to the reheating and equalizing walking beam furnace. After heating to the rolling temperature slabs are transported to the rolling mill stands of the P-1500 Steckel rolling mill. After descaling, slabs are guided into the double-stand tandem reversing rolling mill with one vertical edging mill. The rolling mill is equipped with two furnace coilers equalizing the temperature of the hot strip and reducing its cooling during rolling. The process of rolling itself is fully automated.

Page 7: Chequered Plates

After the last pass through the mill stand, the strip is guided by the roll table through 7 sections of laminar cooling into the finished strip coiler. After coiling, adjustment and marking coils are transported to the storage area. Hot-rolled strips from the Steckel wide-strip mill can be delivered directly to customers for further processing or transported to shearing lines. Shearing lines allow trimming of coil side edges, cutting of 33 t coils to coils of lower total weight, slitting of wide strips to narrow strips and cutting of strips into sheets. At present there are 3 slitting lines and 2 cut-to-length lines for sheets production.A part of the plant for flat hot-rolled products of ArcelorMittal Ostrava, a.s. are 4 roll forming lines where open steel cold rolled products and steel road barriers are produced from slitted strips. The production facility of the Steckel rolling mill is projected for a yearly output of approximately 1 000 000 tons of hot-rolled flat products.By means of gradual technical measures, the yearly production output has been increased up to 1 270 000 tons. At the end of 2008, a new – the third cut-to-length line shearing coils into sheets will be put into operation. This cut-to-length line will allow to shear strips into sheets from internal coils of 15,0 mm thickness and from external coils up to 18,0 mm thickness and up to 2000 mm of width.

Used terminologyNames of products used in this catalogue are in conformity with the ČSN EN 10079:2007 standard – “Definitions of steel products”.

Semi–finished products (continuously cast blanks)

Semi–finished products are continuously cast blanks (slabs) destined for the production of hot-rolled strips.

Hot-rolled strips without coating

Both European and national standards distinguish two basic types of hot-rolled flat products: hot-rolled strips and hot-rolled sheets.

The hot-rolled strip without coating is a hot-rolled product which is coiled immediately after passing through the finishing mill stand. After rolling has been finished, the hot-rolled strip has either slightly rounded edges or trimmed edges, in case of slit wide strip.

Hot-rolled strips are divided into: - Hot-rolled wide strips (of 600 mm width or more) - Slit hot-rolled wide strips (of 600 mm rolled width or more and under 600 mm after slitting)

Hot-rolled sheets without coating

The hot-rolled sheet without coating is a hot-rolled product with clear edge forming, supplied in tables and with surface in condition after rolling, mostly of square shape and of width equal to or above 600 mm. Edges are either in condition after rolling (natural edges) or trimmed.

- Sheets are produced by cutting of the wide strip at the continuous mill train. The product is generally called a hot-rolled sheet or plate.

In terms of thickness, flat products are divided into - Thin sheets and strips ( of thickness below 3.0 mm) - Thick sheets (plates) and strips (of thickness above or equal to 3.0 mm)

Page 8: Chequered Plates

Steel grades, chemical composition

Chemical analyses of steels which are stated in the tables of grades suitable for production of hot-rolled strips should be considered as informative ones. The chemical composition of steels according to various standards can differ in contents of individual elements. For standard supplies, the determinant is the content of elements specified in the respective standard. If agreed by the production plant, steel strips with modified chemical composition can also be supplied.

Surface – coils are supplied with surface after hot rolling (scaled) without any further treatment.

Coil weight – the following graph shows the approximate weight of coils in relation to the strip width. Wide hot-rolled strips are regularly supplied in coils of specific weight ranging from 18.0 to 21.0 kg/mm of width. (Coils of lower specific weight can be supplied if agreed with the production plant). With maximum coil width of 1550 mm, the maximum coil weight is 33 tons.

Coil marking – coils supplied from the P-1500 Steckel rolling mill are provided with the following data sprayed on the coil:• Production order • Steel grade • Strip dimensions • Heat number • Product ID (product identification code) • Coil weight

Identification data can also be printed on a sticking label which is stuck on the agreed point of the coil after it has cooled down.

Coil binding - wide coils (supplied from the P-1500 Steckel rolling mill with natural edge) are bound around the perimeter with a cyclopean tape of 32 x 1 mm depending on the place of destination.

Standard number of points of perimeter bindings: • strips up to 1200 mm of length - 2 • strips over 1200 mm of length - 3

(If agreed with the production plant, coils can be provided with more perimeter bindings or with cross bindings).Method of storage during transport - coils are stored on steel pallets (approx. weight from 778 to 1230 kg) with the axis in horizontal position or in special railway wagons destined to coils transport.
