It was also pleasing to see our partner secondary school, Erina HS represented by some extremely talented music students. As you can see by the photographs we had many of our families represented and from the feedback it is apparent that everyone enjoyed the activities. The bush dancing seemed a hit with students and adults alike. Thank you to Mrs Palmer who undertook the challenge of teaching our youngsters these fun dances. The day started with the enthusiastic crew from radio station, STAR FM and a sausage sizzle breakfast. The students enjoyed being celebrities by reading the weather and being interviewed by Banksy & Steve. Thank you to our SaCC Facilitator Nada Potter for coordinating the visit by STAR FM. (The STAR FM team also included Nada’s daughter-in-law, Chloe Potter who was re- sponsible for the great face painting designs). Also thank you to Mr Twyman and his great team of helpers, Renee Stephen, Joy Davis, Natalie King, Louise Nichols, Vanya Zetovic, Ruth D’Arth and Diane Twyman who ensured another successful Scholastic Book Fair. A total of 90 books were donated and these will greatly enhance our library resources. Thanks to ALL of our donors ! The performances from our Choir (thank you Miss Wiseman), Dance (thank you Mrs Hynes) and Recorder groups were terrific. In fact our Recorder Group will be performing at the Sydney Opera House with 900 other students from Public schools across NSW in the Grand Concert Hall this Wednesday evening. I am looking forward to seeing them perform and thank Mrs Rowland, Miss Whitty and Miss Jankovic for all of their hard work preparing this group of students. I’m especially pleased as students from Mrs Vaughan’s Hearing class were keen enough to volunteer and be a part of this group. Good Luck everyone! CHERTSEY PRIMARY SCHOOL P&C MEETING REMINDER Meet other parents and staff at tonight’s (Tuesday, 9th August) P&C Meeting for the month of August com- mencing at 6.30pm. CHERTSEY PRIMARY SCHOOL P&C MEETING REMINDER

Meet other parents and staff at tonight’s (Tuesday, 9th August) P&C Meeting for the month of August com-mencing at 6.30pm. It is to be held in the staff room. Our P&C always welcome new members. We aim to complete each meeting within 2 hours. Your P&C supports your children. • The students from Erina High School’s music department were outstanding . Their teacher, Mrs Broadley gave us all a great insight to their talents and instruments. Former student, Veronica Lawson was one of the students who demonstrated that Erina HS is really nurturing her talents that were already evident whilst attending Chertsey. Thank you to Miss Sewell for coordinating an excellent Open Day for our school community.

BEND IT LIKE THE CHERTSEY GIRLS SOCCER TEAM! CONGRATULATIONS to our girl’s soccer team who last Thursday won their 3rd round match against Valley View PS (5-0) in the NSW PSSA Knockout. This follows excellent wins against schools that have up to three times the enrolments of Chertsey. Having seen all three games I am impressed by the manner in which they play the game. Their sporting spirit, team work and determination is clearly evident. And the fact that most of the team have never played competitively before makes their efforts even more creditable. So far they have scored 23 goals and have conceded just one goal! A fantastic effort girls. I know they appreciate the efforts of their coach Mr MacFarlane who volunteers his time to coach them. Good luck in the Round 4 game.

EXCURSION Stage 2 Excursion As you can see by the photographs the Stage 2 students had an enjoyable learning experience whilst participating in the excursion to Rumbalara Field Studies Centre and Nature Reserve last Tuesday. The excursion complemented the great work done in the COGS unit-‘State & National Parks’. Thank you to Mr MacFarlane for organising this excursion. I am sure the students appreciated the great weather last week whilst spending time in their ‘outdoor classroom’. IMPORTANT SAFETY CONCERN Last Friday morning we all received a shock when a young student was hit by a motor vehicle whilst attempting to cross Springfield Rd. Fortunately, apart from some scratches the young child escaped unhurt. Also, the impact was lessened as the driver had slowed down to below the speed limit when entering the ‘School Zone’. After examining the area where the accident occurred, I have decided that the top pedestrian gate on Springfield Rd should remain closed as it encourages students and family members to cross the road too close to the crest of the hill. Visibility for drivers and pedestrians is very poor at that point. I will ask the P&C to join me in lobbying the Council and RTA for a pedestrian refuge to be constructed on Springfield Rd. We will open the larger gates further down Springfield Rd and encourage everyone to cross where visibility is much greater. SASS RECOGNITION WEEK Last week was National Recognition Week for all School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS). We are incredibly fortunate to have such a hard working and caring group of SASS staff at Chertsey. Each and every school day, their positive attitude and flexibility inspire us all to strive harder and make a real difference to the lives of our students. The SASS team is led by School Administrative Manager, Mrs Denning, an incredibly caring, efficient and hard working person. Her fabulous team is: Christine Holloway, Kate Currie, Samantha Giltanan, Linda Gormly, Janet Harding, Donna Lerway, Kim Masters, Stephanie Pannell, Trish Plater, Alex Wastell and Jenny Webb. The SASS team were thanked at a special morning tea last week and our parents were represented by our P&C Secretary, Michelle Frazer. Thank you Michelle for making the time to attend.

    SUNSAFE and PROUD

Well done to Nicholas of class 3/4M who won this week’s hat draw. Nicholas wins a slushy, courtesy of our canteen and our P&C, for simply having a school hat on that he wears at all times whilst out in the playground. Congratulations Nicholas enjoy your slushy! PRIORITY SCHOOLS APPLICATION Currently Chertsey is fortunate to be receiving funding from a Federal Government program called Priority School Funding. This is a significant amount of funding that is mandated to enhance both Literacy and Numeracy programs. It also assists by including an additional staffing component. As the 4 year cycle is due to end at the end of 2012 I would like to apply again on behalf of our school community. This involves having community endorsement which I will seek from our P&C . If anyone has a question regarding this program please feel free to contact me.

We only have a few more events to finalise after last week’s half-day field events carnival. Early next week students will find out if they will be representing Chertsey at the Brisbane Water PSSA District Athletics Carnival, to be held at Mingara on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th August (Term 3 Week 6). CHANGES OF ADDRESS AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS

Please notify the office of any address and telephone number changes. In the

event of an emergency we must have current information.

  • We would like to remind all parents that for the safety of your own child/ren and all children who attend Chertsey Primary School the road rules and School Zone laws apply at all times. There are an increasing number of parents and visitors who are stopping in no stopping zones and bus stop areas while dropping off their children in the mornings and picking them up in the afternoons. We have also seen quite a few drivers do U-turns in the School Zones. There are heavy fines that apply for this and both Council Rangers and police can visit at any time. Please keep in mind the safety of all our children and the fact that you may be fined should you ignore road safety signage even if you are only stopping for a few seconds. Fines for stopping in a Bus Zone or No Stopping Zone are a minimum penalty of $238 plus 2 de-merit points, speeding through a school zone has a maximum penalty of $2700 plus 7 demerit points and approaching a children’s crossing too quickly to stop safely has a penalty of $397 plus 4 demerit points.

  • FOUND A substantial amount of money was found in the Cottage recently. If you think this money may be yours please contact the school office.

Active After School Just a reminder that Active kicked off last week. Please ensure your child has appropriate clothes for the afternoon and that they must go straight to the hall at 3pm. Kate

COLES AND WOOLWORTHS Keep collecting your Coles vouchers and Woolworths receipts. The coded number needed for Woolworths is located at the bottom of the receipt-above the fuel voucher. Boxes for collection of these are in the school foyer. There are also tally charts for you to see how we are progress-ing. Remember to tell your family, friends, neighbours to keep their vouchers/receipts for you.

  • Gosford City Council is taking the Food Waste Challenge. Be part of it! Did you know? The average NSW household wastes $1036 worth

of food each year which equates to 800 000 tonnes of food, all going to landfill! The Gosford Food Waste Challenge is a free, hands-on and innovative education program for the Gosford City community. It raises awareness of food waste whilst providing you with fun, simple steps for reducing your household’s food waste. Run over three, two hour workshops, participants will learn essential food waste avoidance strategies such as shopping and food planning, portion sizes, cooking with leftovers and food storage and preservation techniques. So take the challenge and register today, visit www.gosford.nsw.gov.au/environment for full details. Contact Gosford City Council’s Environmental Education Officer on 4325 8222 if you have any queries.
