THE MATCHUP Coming off a 7-7 2017 season, the Chesapeake Bayhawks are looking to prove themselves and get back on track with a win at their season opening game. They will be playing on Saturday, April 21st at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium against the newly relocated Dallas Rattlers who moved from Rochester to Dallas this offseason. Faceoff starts at 7:00 pm and both teams are looking to start the season off strong with a win. With the Bayhawks earning a .500 record in the 2017 season, the team was willing to take some chances and make some changes. General Manager Dave Cottle is making his grand return back to the Bayhawks sideline as Head Coach. During the offseason, the coaching staff has been trying to find ways to improve the 7th ranked Bayhawk defense from 2017. Chesapeake acquired Garrett Epple from Atlanta, Jack Adams from Charlotte, and picked up Matt Rees, Mark Glicini, Goran Murray and Luke Duprey from the supplemental draft to help tighten up their defense. Last season the additions of Lyle Thompson, Josh Byrne, Colin Heacock and Jake Froccaro provided a great foundation for the offense. Coming into the second season with the team, along with the addition of Steele Stanwick, the Bayhawks look to improve on their number one ranked offense. With a mixture of returners and a few new players, it will be critical for everyone to be a team player and step up in their roles to get a win against Dallas who went 8-6 last season and made the playoffs. That being said, the Bayhawks have not taken this offseason lightly and are ready to burst out of the gates on their home field for the start of the 2018 Major League Lacrosse Season with a win. Watch the Bayhawks play their 1st game of the year against the Dallas Rattlers at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday night at 7:00 pm EST.

HEADLINE 2017 Rookie Recap

This past 2017 season, the Chesapeake Bayhawks earned the vote as number one offense in the MLL. With 9 strong draft picks who joined the team, the Bayhawks felt the immediate addition of talent coming in halfway through the season from those respective rookies. One newcomer who separated themselves from the pack by the end of the season was Josh Byrne, who broke the MLL record for rookie goals scored in a season by 5 goals tallying up a season total of 39 goals. He surpassed the previous holder Kieran McArdle who recorded 34. Each new rookie stood out, with Josh Byrne earning the Cascade Rookie of the Year Award, and the tenacity and grit from the group as a whole was not only apparent in the stat sheets but on the field and in game film. The offseason has only given this group time to mature and develop their game, grow stronger and come back better than ever to compete and protect their 2017 rank as the number one offense. For the 2018 season, Jake Froccaro, Colin Heacock, Matt Rees, Isaiah Davis-Allen, Josh Byrne, Nick Aponte, Ben Williams, Stephen Kelly, and Nick Manis are a group to look out for and a force to be reckoned with.

2018 MLL COLLEGIATE DRAFT RECAP The 2018 MLL Collegiate Draft at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. was filled with excitement and suspense, as three big name players sat atop the draft board coming into the day. Once the draft began, the top three players flew quickly off the board with Trevor Baptiste going first all around. The Chesapeake Bayhawks holding the 4th overall pick, pulled off the first trade in the draft with their season opener opponent, the Dallas Rattlers. The trade allowed for the Bayhawks to move back to the 6th overall pick in the first round and pick up the 42nd overall pick in the 5th round. This trade gave an opportunity for the Bayhawks to gain a draft pick in the 5th round, after they traded their 5th round pick earlier in the year for Garret Epple. With the 6th overall selection the Chesapeake Bayhawks selected Long Stick Midfielder Sean Mayle from Denver University. Mayle adds to an already star studded group, bringing his proven long-stick skills as a midfielder. Sean is an offensive threat at the pole position with 9 career goals and 5 assists and will be dangerous with the MLL’s 2 point goal. While he adds an offensive spark, Sean brings reliable wing play with his 120 career ground balls and his 21 caused turnovers. Being able to play both sides of the field, he will be an impactful player to the defense once he is finished his collegiate career. Following this selection, the Bayhawks went back on the clock in the second round of the draft and selected Ian MacKay with the 13th overall pick out of Vermont. MacKay is a Canadian midfielder that is a dangerous offensive threat. In his career at Vermont, he amassed over 141 goals and 76 assists. MacKay with a staggering 8 game winning goals was a difference maker. Following the second round pick the Bayhawks coaching staff had a long wait before it made its way to the 5th round where they selected short stick defensive midfielder Ryan Hursey from Georgetown University. Ryan Hursey will make his way up Route 50 to Annapolis, bringing his tough, athletic midfielder attitude and build that will help with clearing the ball out of their zone and work to improve the defense from last year. With the 49th overall pick in the 6th round, the Chesapeake Bayhawks were able to grab a steal in Shack Stanwick, brother of Bayhawks attacker Steele Stanwick. Shack is the youngest of all Stanwick brothers and brings his offensive experience from Johns Hopkins as a four year starter where he racked up a total of 89 goals and 106 assists at the attack position. Last but not least, Cottle grabbed Salisbury close defensemen Kyle Tucker with their 7th round pick to add defensive depth and continue to strengthen the defensive side of the ball.
