Excellence Endgame Award Honoree to Speak on the Importance of Title I Funds and Chess in School. Academics and Parental Involvement The 13 th Annual ChessFest at the University of Texas at Dallas is scheduled for February 25, 2014 in the Eugene McDermott Library. Title I Chess Coordinator, Elizabeth Tejada is the featured speaker and will receive the 2014 UT Dallas Chess Educator of the Year Award. “My son Erick was part of a chess team which gave me drive to immediately start working with local resources in the community and to participate in different chess tournaments. It was the start of a great passion that has led me here,” said Tejada. ChessFest is a celebration of chess organized annually by UT Dallas’ McDermott Library and the renowned “BlindFold Chessto be held in McDermott Library UT Dallas Grandmasters George Margvelashvili and David Berczes will go up against challengers in a game of blindfolded chess on Feb. 26. The event takes place in the Eugene McDermott Library lobby from noon to 2p.m. This free event features the UTD Chess Program’s giant chess set called “Chess Grande.” Enjoy the fun and meet members of the elite UTD Chess Team. During the ceremony, Tejada will speak on the importance of using Title I funds and chess to boost academic excellence. Tejada currently serves as commissioner of the Florida Scholastic Chess League (FSCL), Chess Coordinator of Title I and International Chess Coordinator for FIDE (World Chess Federation). The event is open to the public. The reception begins at 6:15p.m. in the McDermott Suite. The awards ceremony lasts from 7- 8p.m. A light buffet will be provided.
