Thanksgiving
For the past 14 years, Stadium Grille(104 Turner Lane, West Chester) hasgiven back to the community by serv-ing Thanksgiving meals for membersof the Coatesville VA Medical Centerand Safe Harbor, a homeless shelter inWest Chester.
It started with about 100 people and
a handful of Stadium Grille staffmembers who donated their time.When customers and other peopleheard about the event the followingyear, they wanted to join in, and ithas grown ever since. Last year, theyserved around 200 people at theirrestaurant, 100 to 150 meals go backto the VA hospital, and the rest (in-cluding 80 or 90 turkeys that are usedthroughout Christmas) are donatedto the Lords Pantry in Downingtown
and the Chester County Food Bank.

Stadium Grille gives back to the community, one meal at a timein the World Trade Center. Kevinwas very well known at StadiumGrille and his family and friends havereturned every year since to servemeals to the veterans. They view it asa nice bonding day to tell stories andcelebrate Kevins life.
The event itself has grown to be more
than just a restaurant thing; it is nowa community thing, said StadiumGrille owner and event organizer, BobBatley. There is no one huge donor,but there has been a big communityeffort and I just wanted to say thankyou.
In 2009, about 100 families and30 businesses contributed money.Homemade decorations and cards forthe veterans were made by elementa-
ry school students. Local businessesdonated their services, including apublic relations firm doing PR for theevent, and an electrician rewiring therestaurant to accommodate more ov-ens. When the event got too big forStadium Grille, Westtown School of-fered to cook 30 turkeys bright and
early on Thanksgiving Day in theirlarge kitchen. Numerous familiesbaked desserts and handed out goodiebags for the vets.
A bountiful buffet is set up with 30turkeys, 40 pounds of mushrooms (toadd some Chester County flair), 60pies, mashed potatoes, green beans
and corn. Theres a team of carvers,led by Kevins dad. Many of the vol-unteers bring their families along,inspiring the next generation to giveback.
Stadium Grille is seeking monetary dona-tions, free turkey coupons, desserts andgoodie bags. Last year they collected 110turkeys, and not as many stores are ableto donate turkeys this year. They alsoneed volunteers to help serve on Thanks-
giving from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If youreinterested in making a donation or assist-ing for this event: contact Bob Batley [email protected] or 610-344-7860.
Phoebe Kitson is the program manag-
er at the Chester County Food Bank.They support 27 food cupboards and36 agencies who receive governmentand donated foods throughout thecounty. In 2010, they distributed1 million pounds of food, serving32,000 families, 73,163 adults, 31,143children and 19, 615 seniors.

have food with those who are lessfortunate than we are, due to what-ever circumstance in that life whichhas not allowed them to get healthyfood for their kids, Kitson said. Weare committed to making that workfor however long it takes. We firmlybelieve that no one should go hun-
gry, especially in Chester County. We
know the food is here. We just have tohelp get it to our kids, the elderly, toour individuals and our families.
The Chester County Food Bank is al-ways looking for partnerships withrestaurants and grocery stores to do-nate food throughout the county, andcompanies to do food drives through-out the holiday season and during therest of the year. They are also lookingfor food donations (especially healthy

So when you go to the supermarketto do your holiday shopping thisyear, pick up some extra things forthe Chester County Food Bank orbake some cookies or a pie for Sta-dium Grille. Volunteers are certainlyneeded on Thanksgiving Day to helpout at Stadium Grille or all year long
at the Chester County Food Bank. Af-ter all, the holidays are a time to givethanks and to come together.
Just because times are tough, doesntmean we cant lend a hand.

corner, and its time for our annualdinner-hosting duties. This year, myhusband and I will feed our largestcrowd yet. Still, Im determined tocrank out a gourmet meal withouta kitchen meltdown.
How will I do it? With a few of thesetasty shortcuts. Incorporate theminto your menu plans and I promisethat, like me, youll be relaxing witha glass of wine on the big day, not
scrambling in the kitchen.

years, he and his wife have spenttheir Turkey Day in the kitchen atFirst Presbyterian Church of Phoe-nixville to prepare a noon feast forfellow souls in need of a hot mealand some company. Friendship,giving, community. This is howthey celebrate the goodness intheir lives.
The Jaycees of Phoenixville havestarted up a new tradition. Inhonor of the gigantic harvest feastconsumed on Thanksgiving, the
Jaycees are hosting the SecondAnnual Burn Off The Bird 5K Run)on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 8 a.m. onFranklin Commons. And evenmore people are expected than the300 that participated last year.

People are selective about theirpizza and fiercely loyal once theyfind their favorite spot. So loyal,in fact, that some members of theChester County Sheriffs Depart-ment will, literally, hang their hats(on pepper jars) at their preferredpizza joint, Bennys Pizza in WestChester.
On any given day, youll see a blendof students and people in suitsor uniforms grabbing a slice. Theowners, Joe and Sal, likely knoweach of their names.
Between the two of us, we knowabout everybody that walksthrough our doors, Joe said. Wewant to know our customers.
And those customers know andlove Bennys -- and have been en-
joying it since 1957.
Bennys is the oldest pizza shop inWest Chester, said Joe, pointing toone of the original business cards.Their phone number back thenstarted with letters (before ten-digit phone numbers). Customershave been enjoying the same reci-pes for years at Bennys, in additionto some unique combinations thatJoe and Sal have created.
We have a one-of-a-kind strom-boli with big pieces of ham and acreamy cheese filling, Joe said.We have one customer thatmoved to upstate New York and hewanted them to make it just like
ours. He took one of ours with himto demonstrate, and they just cantduplicate it. Our customers also saythat we have the best cheesesteaks,pizza and chicken wings. We listento what they think and what theywant.
Giving back to the community isalso important to this West Ches-
ter institution; they regularly hostfundraising events where theydonate 10 percent of the sales toworthy causes. They also are mem-bers of the Chamber and BID, andrecently won an award from 911Emergency Services for their con-stant community support.

Step away from the canned foodsaisle! There is no need for you tobuy canned cranberry sauce whenfresh cranberries are readily avail-able this time of year. Just followthis simple recipe and youll havethe freshest, most delicious cran-berry sauce ever. Enjoy.
CranberrySauce
What you need:2 cups fresh cranberries3/4 cup orange juice1 cinnamon stickDash of vanilla extract4 tablespoons of sugar
Cranberry sauce and Brussels sproutsWhat to do:1.Rinse cranberries and placethem in a small pot over mediumhit and cover.
2.Add orange juice, cinnamonstick and vanilla extract.
3.Cranberries will begin toburst, stir every couple minutes.
4.Once it is a thick sauce consis-tency, add sugar.
5.Incorporate all ingredients to-gether and lower heat to a simmeruntil ready to serve.*
*Remember to stir every couple ofminutes.
Brussels sproutsewww! Youllnever hear those words again ifyou serve your kids/guests thisrecipe. The secret? One wordba-con. Bacon makes everything bet-ter, doesnt it? This recipe turnsthose little, bitter mini-cabbagesinto savory, yet sweet delectablebites.
BrusselsSproutsWhat you need:2 lbs. Brussels sprouts4 strips smoked bacon1 large shallot, minced1 tablespoon butter, melted1 teaspoon sugarSalt and pepper to tasteBreadcrumbs (if desired)
What to do:1.Wash sprouts and cut in half.2.Boil in water for about 6 min-utes, until nearly tender and drain.
3.In separate pan, crisp up the 4strips of bacon.
4.Remove bacon and crumble.5.In bacon drippings, brownminced shallot.
6.
Once shallots are brown, add
bacon, sprouts, salt and pepper topan and toss.
7.Transfer Brussels mixture to aglass or ceramic rectangular roast-ing dish.
8.Drizzle melted butter overtop.
9.Sprinkle sugar evenly on topof sprouts.
10. If you would like to usebreadcrumbs, this is when youwould sprinkle some on top.
11.Place roasting dish underbroiler for about 5 minutes. Keepa close eye on it, you dont wantit to burn. Remove from broilerwhen golden brown and serve.

Sure, why not?Is this what you sound like at theThanksgiving table? There areso many yummy offerings, howcan you pass up anything? Butfor those who are watching theirwaistlines, there is a way to have itall and some pie, too.
Choosing what and how much toput on your plate makes a big dif-ference. Lets look at two differentscenarios.
Plate 1 has all of the Thanksgivingessentials: Turkey, stuffing, cran-
berries, mashed potatoes andgreen beans (the latter two ac-companied by a dollop of but-ter - who can resist?). Plate 2
has all the same offerings with theadded steamed carrots. The plateslook different, of course, but bothare still quite full and give you ataste of all your favorites.
What you dont know is that plate1 packs a punch of almost doublethe amount of calories of plate 2.So what makes plate 2 so healthy?Well, the portions of stuffing,mashed potatoes and turkey areabout half that of the other plate.The turkey is also white, skinlessturkey, saving the additional fatthat skin and dark meats carry. Butless isnt always the key.
While you are giving up someplate room by reducing the carbsand meats, that room is being filledup with veggies. There is almostdouble the amount of cranberrysauce on the healthier plate. Thereis also double the amount of veg-gies.

But dont forget about the condi-ments. By skipping the added but-ter on the green beans and mashedpotatoes, you are saving over 200calories. Also, because you less-ened the amount of turkey, stuff-
ing and potatoes, you lessened theamount of gravy that was pouredover them, too.
So what do we do with these savedcalories? Well, you can have somedessert! But be good. By choosinglighter desserts -- like pumpkin pie-- and having a reasonable portion,you can come out on top and stillnot consume as many calories as
you would if you opted for plate 1without dessert.
We can have our Thanks-giving dinner and eat it too!And still feel good about it.

ART: The appetizer of local cheesesand a spinach salad both were presentednicely. The cheeses were very good andpaired very well. I ordered the crab cakeentree and we were served Limoncellowith our desserts, which was very good.
