West Geauga coach Lou Cirino didn’t need to provide any extra motivation for his players Saturday. The task against Beachwood was simple: Win and host the school’s first home playoff game in a decade; lose and travel to Akron Friday night to face defending state champion St. Vincent–St. Mary, the state’s top ranked team in Ohio Division III. “Our guys knew coming in that we had an opportunity to host a home playoff game if we won. It’s only been one time in our school history, so our guys were aware of that,” Cirino said. “And we knew we had to be tough, especially in this weather.” Saturday afternoon’s game against the playoff-bound Bison (6-4, 5-1 CVC Metro) was amidst a steady rain, often times a deluge. But behind the grit and adapt- ability of 25 seniors, especially quarterback Connor Krouse, and a stellar defensive effort, West Geauga ended its season on a positive note with a 27-15 win. “The seniors I have are so tough and resilient ... because that’s what you have to be in life,” Cirino said. “They were ready to play this week, to get that feeling of winning back in the locker room.” The Wolverines, which fin- ished fourth in Ohio Division III, Region 7, will face Poland Seminary (9-1) Friday night at Howell Field. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. For Cirino, a West Geauga graduate, the contest will be a rematch of sorts. In 2001, he lost to the Bulldogs, 17-10, in the playoffs his senior year. “We’re going to host a home playoff game ... and the Bulldogs of Poland,” he told his team in the locker room. “Twelve years in the making. I want this game.” Beachwood will be on the road Saturday night to battle Gilmour in an Ohio Division V, Region 15, first-round contest. “It’s huge, get on a one-game win streak,” said Krouse, his face and uniform covered in mud. “We couldn’t go into the playoffs los- ing three straight, so it was big.” Senior linebacker Dan November added, “This morn- ing we actually found out that if we won, we would host a play- off game. So it just made it that more important.” For the past three weeks, West Geauga has controlled its playoff destiny, but the Wolverines stum- bled against Chagrin Valley Con- ference Chagrin Division rivals Chagrin Falls and Kenston in Weeks 8 and 9. After fewer than two years in office, Chester Township Fiscal Officer Mike Stark has resigned, officials acknowledged Wednesday. During the public comment portion of Wednesday’s Chester Township Trustees meeting, for- mer Fiscal Officer Karen Austin, a frequent critic of Stark, asked about Stark’s attendance at meetings. “Are we ever gonna see the Fiscal Officer again?” Austin asked. In late August, Austin had accused Stark and trustees of mishandling township finances, asking why the township had brought in Local Government Services, a branch of the Ohio Auditor’s Office, to examine the township’s books. Stark did not attend that meeting, but blasted Austin at the following meeting Septem- ber 6, accusing her of assassinat- ing his character and leaving the Fiscal Officer’s office in a sham- bles when he took office. Stark had defeated Austin’s bid for re-election in November of 2011 by a vote of 2,246 to 1,788, according to Geauga County Board of Elections figures. For the third time in the last several weeks, police were sum- moned to a rowdy Chester Township Trustees meeting, but this time the call was made by a resident sitting in the audience. During two previous meet- ings, Trustee Chairman Mike Joyce had called police when a resident heckled trustees from the audience and when another resident had expressed his dis- gust with the lack of decorum at meetings. Both had made their com- ments outside the time set aside for public remarks and had been warned they were being disruptive. Near the end of the public comment portion of the Oct. 17 trustees meeting, shortly before the meeting adjourned, resident Mitch Gentile stood up and approached Trustee Ken Radtke to confront him about his previ- ous involvement with a contro- versial newsletter, the Chester Observer. Resident and former Township Fiscal Officer Karen Austin and others protested that Gentile was not allowed to approach the raised dais where trustees sit, but Gentile contin- ued his accusations. And like last week’s gameagainst the Bombers, WestGeauga found itself winning thestatistical battle with little toshow on the scoreboard. The game was tied 13-13 at

halftime despite Beachwoodfailing to pick up a first downand gaining minus-4 yards inthe opening 24 minutes. In fact, the Bison did not

muster a first down until quar-terback Max Balazs found widereceiver Julio Stevens for a 30-yard gain with under three min-utes left in the third quarter. The Bison were in the game

because they capitalized on twoWolverines’ turnovers in thefirst half. West Geauga’s second lost

fumble of the first quarter gaveBeachwood a first down at theWest Geauga 9. Two plays later,Balazs hooked up with TylerHines in the end zone to giveBeachwood a 7-0 lead. Then, midway through the

second quarter, defensive backCharles Colson stepped in frontof a Krouse pass and returned it46 yards for a touchdown and a13-6 Bison lead.“Turnovers always kill, no

matter if it’s a rainy day or a niceday out,” Cirino said. “We toldthe kids in the second half it’s anew ballgame, just take the ballaway, play defense and, offensiveline, have some guts and godown and score. That was thesimple message at halftime.”The second half, though,

belonged to Krouse, who rushedfor a game-high 208 yards on 33 carries and scored three

touchdown. He carried the ballon all but three of his team’splays in the final two quarters.Krouse scored the Wolver-

ines’ go-ahead touchdown onthe fourth play of the thirdquarter when he raced 56 yardsdown the left sidelines for ascore. He added a two-pointconversion, making it 21-13. Then, after Beachwood

turned the ball over on downsat the West Geauga 45, Krousetook the first snap from scrim-mage and swept around theright edge for a 54-yard touch-down. The extra point was nogood, but the Wolverinesextended their lead to 27-13.“We knew that with the

weather it would be difficult topass the ball, so we have tocome out and be really physi-cal,” said Krouse, who complet-ed 4 of 7 passes for 103 yards, including a 73-yard TD pass tosenior Tom Snavely with 12 sec-onds left in the first quarter. “We adjusted to the field in

the second half ... and we brokesome long runs, and that’s all weneeded to do,” he said. Cirino said his game plan on

offense in the second half wasto run Krouse, whose largehands allows him to hold ontothe ball.“Connor is the most resilient

guy we probably have on ourteam. He’s so tough. He workedso hard this off season and forhim to quit, that’s just not anoption for him. That’s just whoConnor is,” Cirino said.“Whoever is going to get him atthe next level, they will be luckyto have him, because I love himand will miss him.”

The Bison’s only points inthe second half came whenWest Geauga intentionallysnapped the ball out of the endzone on a punt late in the fourthquarter.“We all knew what they were

coming out with and we wereready for them,” November said.“We prepared all week for it andit was nothing different. Westepped up when we needed toand got the job done.”Because of that, the Wolver-

ines will be home this week.“We have a home playoff

game,” Krouse said. “That’s all Iwanted.”

“We’re not allowed toapproach; why can he?” Austinshouted from the back of theroom and announced she wasgoing to call the police. Gentile held what he said

was the first edition of theChester Observer, a publicationthat is often highly critical oftrustees’ actions. Articles in the circular are

usually unsigned, but a few resi-dents at trustee meetings identi-fy themselves as being involvedwith the newsletter, which theysaid they have the right to pub-lish under the First Amendmentto the U.S. Constitution. Gentile has appeared at a

previous meeting to accuseRadtke of being involved withthe Observer — which hedenied — and of being a “pup-pet” of former Trustee RonCotman, a frequent critic ofJoyce and Trustee Judy Caputo. Thursday night, Gentile read

aloud what he said was an arti-cle written by Radtke in theObserver as well as a list ofearly contributors, includingRadtke and Cotman. “My name is on there; I’m

not denying it,” Radtke said, adding he had been involvedbriefly during the early editions,

but had resigned from thegroup after announcing hisplans to run for trustee. “I do not write for them,

underlined,” Radtke said.Gentile took out a sock pup-

pet and began to put it on hishand, but Joyce asked him toput it away. Gentile accused Radtke of

what he said were “lies, lies, lies,” as Austin again threatenedto call 911. “He has freedom of speech,”

one unidentified woman said. Austin was heard making a

call on her cell phone, saying,“Mitch Gentile is intimidatingand harassing not only the audi-ence, but a trustee.” The meeting then broke up

and Gentile and the rest of theaudience left the room astrustees signed checks. Outside, three Chester

Township police cruisers ap-peared in the parking lot aspeople filed out of the building. Joyce said later someone

had inadvertently set the maindoor so that it locked automati-cally behind anyone leaving. “The police could not get into

the building, because the depart-ment’s key to the town hall waslocked up in the police depart-ment,” Joyce said. “The officerwas upset and rightly so. As faras the officers knew, someonewas in danger inside. They start-ed knocking on the door andalmost broke it to get in.”

Joyce said he went to thedoor and told police the disrup-tion was over and all was well. “I think we will change the

procedure and issue morecopies of level 2 keys to policeofficers so it doesn’t happenagain,” Joyce said. “There arepeople who like to disrupt ourmeetings and you never knowwhen (the police) will really beneeded.” No arrests were made.

A visibly angry Stark hadwalked out of that trusteesmeeting and threatened toresign, citing his frustration overcriticisms aimed at him byAustin and others at meetings. Stark said he would attend

trustees meetings only quarter-ly, the minimum required underOhio law. Stark released his personal

email address and asked resi-dents to contact him with theiropinions about whether or nothe should resign from office. Hehas not attended a meetingsince September 6. Trustee JudyCaputo has served as clerk protem at subsequent meetings. Wednesday, in answer to

Austin’s question, Trustee MikeJoyce said he had learned thatStark had submitted a letter ofresignation, effective November30, to County Prosecutor JimFlaiz.“I’m not going to discuss

either the Fiscal Officer or hisintentions at this time,” Joycesaid. Austin persisted, asking why

the report on Chester Town-ship finances (and Stark’s

performance in office) fromthe State Auditor’s Office hasnot been released. “It’s standard procedure not

to release an audit report atelection time; you know that,”Joyce replied. Austin asked again why the

audit report has not beenreleased. “You’re gonna have to talk

to the state; Mr. Stark isn’there,” Joyce replied. When Austin continued to

press, Joyce told her, “I’m notgonna discuss it, period.” “That’s not giving trans-

parency to the residents ofChester Township,” Austin said.

Without further comment,Joyce adjourned the meeting. Flaiz acknowledged Thurs-

day that Stark had submitted aletter of resignation. Stark didnot respond to an email requestfor comment. The Prosecutor said, “Dur-

ing our short time working withMike, we thought he did a goodjob for the township, making hisbest effort under some difficultcircumstances. “Flaiz said that trustees will

appoint Stark’s replacement. “I hope they appoint some-

body who is competent and dili-gent,” Flaiz said.

After 12 years of keep out signs, the 80-acre parcel located at 11255Chillicothe Road, Chester Township, was opened to the public on Oct. 31. All no trespaasing signs have been removed.A pavilion with grills, parking area, decking and a fishing dock are futureconstruction plans. (L to R) Lance Yandell, Rob Pealer and Mike Joyce.

On Oct. 19, The Geauga County Board of Developmental Disabilities, also known as The Metzenbaum Center, completed a pavilion on its campus. The pavilion is conveniently located between the workshop and the houses on campus. Due to the sidewalk access, the pavilion will be used by all individuals who are involved in Metzenbaum programs. Michelle Hawthorne, Director of the campus houses, said, “We will be able to have more social events like cook-outs for our individuals. It will be a good thing for everyone.” The material and foundation were paid for by a donation from the Bessie Benner Metzenbaum Fund of theCleveland Foundation. The pavilion was constructed by a volunteer Amish crew who were led by Norman Yoder. Superintendent Don Riceand Bob Mikula also volunteered their time. The team of workers began setting the posts and beams Fridayevening, and the roof was finished on Saturday – in spite of the rain.

We, the PeopleWhen in the course of

human events it becomes neces-sary for one people to dissolvethe political bands which haveconnected them with another, adecent respect to the opinionsof mankind require that theyshould declare the causes whichimpel them to separation. As such, I shall enumerate

my reasons for leaving the estab-lishment Republican Party:1. It no longer fights to main-

tain America as a Constitutio-nal Republic.2. It no longer represents

conservative values.3. It no longer speaks for

hard-working, productive A-mericans.Most of the professional

politicians in Washington havesucceeded at pursuing their bestinterests and securing an elitestatus above We, the People. Henceforth, my support goes

to those candidates, regardless offaction, who demonstrate (notmerely espouse) Constitutionalconservative values. Our proge-ny’s life, liberty and happinessare irrevocably lost unless wetake coordinated unified actionand resist at the People’s level -our neighborhoods, cities, coun-ties and states. Start putting pen to paper,

feet to soapboxes and checks inthe mail for the right represen-tatives. Let’s saddle-up and get

going.

Benito A. Alvarez, MDChester Township

Favor Open EnrollmentI favor open enrollment, and

stand in disagreement to thepaid ad and earlier comments ofJoe Miller. For starters, his use of dollar

figures. He states that “it takes$12,000 to educate one student, and the state only gives us$5,700 per outside student, leav-ing us the other $6,300 to pay.”Nice use of figures, except itmay not tell the whole story. How much of that $12,000 is

fixed cost? None of it? Half ofit? Did he ever think to factorthat in? No. How much of that$12,000 is for infrastructure andmaintenance? For busing, bus-ing our open students apparent-ly don’t even use? For heat andlight? Hello, folks, those costs are

ours, whether we have 1,000local students or 1,000 localplus 200 outside students. Sotake that portion off the table, because it simply doesn’t mat-ter. There still may be a differ-ential, but it likely won’t bewhat Miller and others havemade it out to be. Facts have to tell the whole

story, not just the part thatmakes your point “look” good.

If, outside students cause arise in teacher-student ratio, then, and only then, would Iagree there’d be a valid concern. That said, it can be a two-

way street. Say, for example, youare trying to hold a 25 to 1 ratio. You have 75 3rd graders. So youhave 3 teachers. What do you doif your numbers drop to 60?Ideally you’d say 3 classes of 20.But economic reality may say, drop one teacher and have twoclasses of 30. Is that better thanadmitting 15 outside studentsand having 3 classes of 25?Adding those 15 student wouldadd $85000 to the mix, probablyclose to the cost of that 3rdteacher with benefits. I’d sayyou were better off in all wayswith 3 at 25 than 2 at 30.Wouldn’t you?I am most troubled by two

of the comments, attributed toMr. Miller (as reported in theSept. 18 publication of theChesterland News) raised inopposition to OE. First, that somehow OE cre-

ates “safety issues” read-“behav-ioral problems.” How so? Are allour local kids little angels whileall outside kids are troublemak-ers? You’ll have a hard time sell-ing that one. In my years aroundthis school district (many), I’veknown more than my share ofhome-grown kids I wouldn’ttrust as far as I could spit. But aswith any group, they were theexceptions, not the rule.Secondly, and most trou-

bling, the expressed fear thatopen enrollment might cause“an effect on our academicscores.” Explain that one. Whatwas he insinuating with that? And be careful, it’s treading onreally shaky ground makingsuch a comment. Further, whatwould be said if (gasp) academ-ic scores went up?I’d like to think that we are

more likely to have kids thatcare participating in OE. I’d liketo think, that despite somepolitical figures decrying thatsubjective notion West G is only40th and not 4th, that others seeus a pretty solid school district, one desirable and likely to be totheir advantage by attending.I’d like to think these kids couldbe looked upon as an asset, nota liability. I’d also like to think, from a business sense; the $1.4million that OE will bring inthis year will take some of thepressure off local homeownersand their tax burden. It’s like running an airline.

You have the plane, fully fueled;you have a pilot and crew. Itmakes more sense to sell the lastseats, even if at a discount, thanto fly the plane only 90% full. I do not see this as the buga-

boo that it’s being made out tobe. I think the Board has acted

very responsibly in welcomingopen enrollment.

Dear Chester TownshipSenior Citizens,As we are all well aware,

winter paid all of us an earlyvisit this season and as a resultour community experienced ahigh level of utility problems. The weather created damage, fires, traffic safety issues and amultitude of power outages, some of which lasted for a sub-stantial amount of time. Your Road, Fire and Police

Department’s were all out therediligently working and respond-ing to the needs of the commu-nity and you should be proud ofall of them. As we workedthrough these events, I had theoccasion to reflect on the possi-ble needs of one of our commu-nities most valued resources, our senior citizens. My thoughts turned to things

such as, what if it was even colderand the power stayed out evenlonger? If we have no power thanwe have no heat or water, wewould get in a car and go some-where else, but where should ourseniors go, how do they get thereand who can they call? First of all, I want to make

sure that you absolutely knowthat if you are in need ofabsolutely anything that youcan and should contact thepolice department. The businessportion of our office is open, 6a.m. to 4p.m. Monday throughFriday. You may always contactme or my AdministrativeAssistant, Lisa and you mayreach us during those hours at440-729-1239. If it is after hoursor you need police assistance, than please call 440-729-1234and if there is any type of anemergency, always dial 911.

We are very fortunate tohave the best group of people, who provide an incredibleamount of services to our sen-iors and all of the seniors withinGeauga County and that is theDepartment on Aging. If you donot have this information, pleasewrite it down and I encourageyou to call them and learn moreabout the many services thatthey provide. The website is www.co.geau-

ga.oh.us/Departments/Aging.aspx and the telephone number is440-279-2130.I would be remiss if I failed

to mention the amount of tele-phone calls that I received, wherein residents inquired aboutmany of these same issues andthey shared the same concernsfor our senior citizens. They haveprovided me with their personalcontact information, so that theycould be called upon to help ourcommunity and our seniors, should the need arise. The bottom line is that I am

encouraging all of you to call usand ask for help, whatever thatneed may be and we will gethelp on its way. Many of youhave told me that “it’s not apolice emergency” or “youdidn’t want to bother us” and Ijust wanted to reassure all ofyou that helping our communityis what we do and my officersare very willing to assist in anyway possible, as are your neigh-bors and friends within thecommunity.Once again, help is just a

telephone call away.

Tough defeats in back to back weeksleading up to Beachwood made thisgame much, much bigger on thischilly rain soaked Saturday afternoon;Saturday afternoon? Just doesn’tsound right, but I digress. Both sideswere already in the week elevendance but a better seed, for bothteams, was on the line.

On Saturday morning the computerrankings had your Wolverines sittingin the 8th spot starring straight up atthe prognosticators pre-seasonpredicted state champion; The St.Vincent – St. Mary Fighting Irish.Although, with a victory the Wolver-ines would move up into a fourthseed, and that’s exactly whathappened! How can you not loveplayoff football?

Welcome back you water logged foot-ball enthusiasts! Welcome back to theregular season finale pitting theBison’s of Beachwood against yourWest Geauga Wolverines!

It took all season, but that pesky painin the (expletive) Mother Nature finallyarrived in Northeast Ohio, and my ohmy was she bitter! What happened,Ma? Father Time and Jack Frost voteyou off the fantasy island? Either wayshe showed up just in time make lifemiserable for players, coaches, and ofcourse the fans! How about youshow a little restraint and hold off an-other few days, even throw a littleuncharacteristic love our way?Guess not!?!?

Acting like a jilted bride at the altarMs. Nature covered all in attendancewith her menacing drizzle and winterychill; a couple of burn barrels atmidfield seemed to be in order for thisone that’s for sure!

In all honesty, and to be fair MotherNature, I can’t remember a footballseason where she’s been so cooper-ative.

The first half went pretty much asexpected...slow! Very wet and verysoggy parlayed with a bunch of mudkept the Wolverines and Bisons slip-sliding away for the first twenty fourminutes; the best way to describe thispast Saturday afternoon? Wet!

Now it seemed a little Chicken Soupfor the Wolverine Soul was in ordercome halftime; not sure they got anythough. But whatever they did getseemed to work because the secondhalf was all West Geauga as theWolverine defense shut out theBison’s thru quarters three and four.

West Geauga led 27-13 late in thegame, but you know the ole saying; itain’t over till it’s over. Another blockedpunt late in the 4th quarter gave theBisons a chance but Beachwoodgave it right back a play later; lookedpretty slippery out there!

Beachwood added two when West Gdirect snapped the ball six rows deep;no need for another blocked puntnow.

So as the clock ticked towards doublezero it was nothing but handshakesand hugs at midfield and along theWolverine sideline. They did it; youdid it! You secured West Geauga’sfirst home playoff game in ten years. That’s how tradition begins!

Wolverine fans, your boys are cominghome; they have a football game toplay against a team called PolandSeminary. Next Friday night in theLand of Chester it’s the West GeaugaWolverines and the Poland SeminaryBulldogs from Poland, Ohio in the firstround of the OHSAA Division 3Region 5 playoffs!

So get there early and grab a seatbecause it’s going to be a standingroom only affair at Howell Field. It’salso time to say goodbye to all thegreen and brown grass one last time, come next year your Wolverines willtake to the new improved field turf atHowell Field. The WGFTC will beon site answering questions andselling bricks.
