Step into The Rocco Forte Collection’sBrown’s Hotel and you enter a completelydifferent world. It is a world steeped inhistory but at the same time one which offersthe ultimate experience in contemporaryluxury. From the bustle of Albemarle Streetand nearby Bond Street, Brown’s offers atranquil haven, whether you are just meetinga friend for a drink in the popular DonovanBar or have the good fortune to be stayingthe night.

Brown’s has been synonymous withluxury since it first opened its doors in 1837as London’s first ever hotel. Over the years ithas welcomed countless famous guestsincluding Winston Churchill, AlexanderGraham Bell (who made the first successfulUK telephone call from the hotel), CecilRhodes and even Agatha Christie andRudyard Kipling, both of whom found it aninspirational venue for their writing.Theodore Roosevelt spent his wedding nightat Brown’s Hotel, in what is now theRoosevelt private dining room in whichguests can be married as it holds a weddinglicence.

In 2003 Brown’s was acquired by TheRocco Forte Collection and following a £24million renovation programme, overseen byOlga Polizzi, it reopened to great excitementin December 2005. Today, the hotelpersonifies the refined sophistication ofmodern British luxury. Each room and suiteis individually decorated and many featureantiques and pieces of art, creating acontemporary elegance and glamorous air.Did you know that Brown’s was the first hotelever to open a restaurant? Prior to this, guests either dined in their own rooms, orhired one of the 16 licensed suites forentertaining. Today, Brown’s boasts HIX atThe Albemarle restaurant, which celebratesnot only traditional British cooking, but isalso home to an amazing collection of Britishart, including pieces by Tracey Emin, BridgetRiley and Rankin.

Mark Hix and Executive Chef Lee Streetonhave created an outstanding menu whichfeatures many great British classics, usingsolely local, seasonal ingredients.Morecambe Bay potted shrimps, RomneyMarsh beets with Ragstone goat’s cheeseand wild herbs are typical starters to be

featured on the menu. Main courses couldinclude fried haddock in beer batter withchips and mushy peas, or Dover sole, as wellas Aberdeenshire 28-day aged beef fillet. Atlunchtime the carving trolley servestraditional roasts including hay-baked leg oflamb or roast rib of Hereford beef andYorkshire pudding.

Visitors to London need look no furtherthan The Albemarle to find some of Britain’sfinest food. The critics certainly agree: TheAlbemarle has been awarded three AARosettes, for “outstanding restaurants thatdemand recognition well beyond the localarea.”

The Albemarle is open for breakfast, lunch, pre-theatre and dinner and offers afull à la carte menu as well as a superb valueset menu, which changes daily, of just £25for two courses and £30 for three. Afternoontea is a quintessentially English experience, and not surprisingly, it is another area whereBrown’s excels. The English Tea Roomserves the most famous afternoon tea inLondon and was given The Tea Guild’s TopAfternoon Tea Award 2009. To theaccompaniment of live piano music, guestscan indulge in Traditional Afternoon Tea for£37. This comprises a choice of 17 teas, ofwhich a tea sommelier can help you makeyour selection, along with a selection ofsucculent finger sandwiches, an assortmentof delicate pastries, fruit and plain sconeswith clotted cream and strawberry preserve, and a choice of freshly baked cakes from thetrolley. Guests of The English Tea Room neednever leave hungry, as Afternoon Tea iscontinuously replenished at no additionalcharge.

The Donovan Bar is one of London’s mostvibrant and fashionable watering holes. Thewalls are lined with Terence Donovan’s iconicblack and white prints but the backdrop toBill Amberg’s leather bar is the hotel’soriginal stained glass window, creating awonderful blend of old and new. TheDonovan Bar even has its very own ‘naughtycorner’ – a cosy seating area for up to 12guests, surrounded by some of thephotographer’s more risqué photographs. An exciting range of ‘must-try’ cocktails areserved, alongside a wide selection of winesand champagnes, all of which can be enjoyed

Is this the most beautiful car in the world? Victoria Macmillan Bell thinks sohaving driven several laps of Balocco, Alfa Romeo’s private test facility in this

breathtaking machine. The 8C also offers one of the finest soundtracks on earth.

The most beautiful car in the world? The8C Competitzione Coupe has been shownoff at various events since its inception4 years ago and given its jaw-droppinglygorgeous looks its no surprise that theorder list was oversubscribed before thefirst one was built. But for those whomissed out there is now a convertibleversion and if you’re quick, the ink has yetto dry on a small handful of contracts.First part with the £25,000 deposit.

Alfa Romeo Centro Style in Turin arebuilding just 500 Spiders using a Maserati-developed 4.7 litre engine developing450bhp and to even weight distribution,Alfa have put the gearbox and fuel tankbehind the cabin. Built of aluminium andsteel with lashings of carbon fibre, the 8CSpider is 90kg heavier than the Coupe at1590kgs and a large chunk more expensiveat £174,000. Yes, that’s pounds not Euros.

Along with a 6-speed Cambiocorsapaddle-shift gearbox, the whole experiencehas to be as good inside as it is outside.

It certainly felt that way. But this is not apractical car, the boot is so tiny that a baghas been designed specifically for it. It’s avery nice bag though. But you can forgive itthat when it looks as good as this.

So here I am, at Balocco circuit, AlfaRomeo’s private test facility between Milanand Turin and Alfa’s ultimate supercar issitting drumming its fingers on the tarmac.

Just two cars here, one inCompetitzione Red and the other in apearlescent white, called Shell White.

The first lap was a familiarisation runand driving me was another Domenico, surname Martino whose official title isworthy of its own paragraph but in short,he is the test engineer responsible for 8C.

Built on a shortened version of theMaserati GranTurismo’s steel platform, which in S form is a truly brilliant drive, thetwo cars also share the same gearbox andthen of course there’s the engine whichstarted life as a Ferrari unit but was thentuned to be used by Maserati and this 4.7

litre V8 is a tuned version of that. But with450bhp it’s more powerful than it is withany trident badge on it and all of itharnessed by the rear wheels.

Having had track time only and notenough of that, the ride is softer than theCoupe but still firm enough to provide athoroughly fun time at the wheel. Thatsaid, I suspect that it might prove a littletoo firm on English roads. The Balocco testtrack is ultra smooth but where there wereopposite cambers taken at speed, theSpider uses all of its mighty grip andbalance to make light work of it.

It’s very easy to oversteer but if you’veplenty of track to play with, could oversteerbe better placed? Steering hasn’t beeninterfered with by electronics and thus it isheavier than the norm but ultimately, thisis a good thing for feedback and goodmotoring entertainment. With severaldifferent settings to choose from includinga ‘wet’ button – in 35 degrees of arid heatthis was not the button to go for. Instead I

Page 37: Chesterton Humberts National Property Collection Autumn 2010

35

chose ‘Sport’ which speeds up throttleresponse, alters stability control and letsloose even more exhaust racket. Talking ofwhich, it is glorious, popping and bangingon deceleration like machine-gun fire. Finda tunnel of which there are three atBalocco, make sure you’re hitting the revrange between 3,500 and 4,000 and changedown. Just fantastic.

Imagine gargling cement, that’s whatit sounds like, stationary.

There’s loads of grip with largeBrembo carbon-ceramic ventilated discshugging the 20” alloys which provide good

braking although not immediately thesharpest feel.

Steering is quite heavy withoutintervention from electronics so linking uptight S-bend brings out muscles you didn’tknow you had.

Gear changes both up and down arepretty swift and from every change up,power down, it feels like someone has juststuck a boot in your posterior and that’s nobad thing. The 8C Spider has a raw edge toit and that holds massive appeal.

There’s a good pair of carbon fibrebucket seats to hold you in place amongst

Page 38: Chesterton Humberts National Property Collection Autumn 2010

36

the sublime interior leatherwork, sharedas it is with Ferrari. You can accessoriseyour Spider with a bag designedspecifically to fit the snug boot withmatching suit-carriers that hang over theback of the head restraints, all of whichcan be ordered in the very same upholsteryleather as your car.

Like the Coupe, the Spider feels andlooks well built with the carbon fibre bodypanels sitting flush and the doors shuttingwith a decent solid closure to them. AlfaRomeo have come a long way in reliabilitystakes and also build quality so I would besurprised if this was any different, puttogether as it is by Maserati and let’s faceit, you’re not forking out this kind of moneyfor something of dubious class.

It’s small, no denying that. At a push, you could just about get enough clothesand overnight needs together between theboot and by ordering the upholsterymatching suit carriers that fit over thehead restraints. The seats are adjustableand expensively padded but as for in-cabinstorage, you’ll have to use your pockets. Asfor attention to detail, Alfa Romeo arerightly proud.

But it’s not just the cabin that carries astrong whiff of a future classic. I have everyconfidence the 8C in both Coupe and Spiderform will be future collector’s gains.

There are no crash test results as yetbut this is no run of the mill car to be usedto commute from home to work and backso it doesn’t really apply. The only obviousdrawback is the fabric roof if some enviouscharmer was to come along with a knife.

There are three major factors toconsider here. The parts come from Italyand it will be serviced by Maserati. Thesecond point is that anything with a 4.7litre engine and 450bhp available is notgoing to be a frugal machine to run. It’salso got an 80 litre tank. That’ll be yourCenturion Amex you’ll be using then.

Like most cars of this ilk, resale priceswill be at a premium. It costs a lot to startwith and only 500 exist, those two pointsalone ensure high residuals. It would comeas no surprise if Alfa Romeo slapped a banon any owners trying to sell their cars onwithin the first year of ownership. In anutshell, expect resale prices to remainhigh for some time.

the sublime interior leatherwork, sharedas it is with Ferrari.

Following your dream may seem somewhatidealistic to many of us but for seafoodentrepreneur Mitch Tonks the lure to dosomething he really loved was just toostrong. Whilst working as an accountant inBath Mitch decided to take the plunge andchoose a whole dramatically new direction inlife. In a risky and exciting move he decidedto open a fishmongers shop leaving behindthe monotony of accountancy and a stablenine to five job.

“It may sound crazy moving from accountancy into selling fish but one of thethings I had always loved was food and inparticular seafood. I grew up in WestonSuper Mare and the seaside culture was anintegral part of my life, it had a real impacton me. I was lucky to have a Grandmotherwho was a great cook, and was patientenough to let me help her, she made basicbut great meals using lots of fresh seafood.Although we lived frugally, we ate well, simple meals such as grilled fish andvegetables and the food was always so freshand full of flavour. We enjoyed a variety offish even the traditional seafood fare ofjellied eels, which were wonderful and spentthe summers of my childhood on thebeaches and I learnt very early on how toprepare fish, cook it and most of all enjoy it.”

His love for cooking progressed over time“I think a love of food is something you justhave in you, I remember being at myhappiest sitting around a table with friendsenjoying good food and drink, I like theceremony of preparing and eating food. As achild I started reading cookery books andjust couldn’t get enough of them, then whenI was in my teens and early twenties I wouldcook food for friends, when I wasn’t cooking Iwould enjoy meals out whenever I could.Weston Super Mare has a wonderful varietyof places to eat with many Greek and Italianfamily owned restaurants, where I enjoyedsimple but fantastic dishes such as Mediterranean grilled lamb. My love for goodfood never diminished and I knew one day Iwould earn a living working with food.”

The career change may have been a drastic one but it gave Mitch the ideal opportunity to introduce quality fresh fish tothe Bath region as there was no real supplierof good seafood nearby at that time. His

passion and determination to provide thevery best fish to his customers swiftly earnedMitch the reputation of being a bit of aseafood guru and local celebrity. Through hisfishmongers Mitch was able to share his indepth knowledge and infectious enthusiasmfor seafood, from selecting a fish topreparing it and cooking delicious seafoodrecipes. His straightforward, no nonsenseand unfussy way of cooking quickly caughton and before long Mitch had established astring of celebrated cookery schools‘FishWorks’ where he was able to furtherencourage and educate those interested incooking with fish. Inspired by food enjoyedwhilst travelling Mitch’s style is that ofsimple European cuisine, real food createdfrom the freshest ingredients. “I love the fishmarkets in Greece and Majorca, you justneed to keep things simple, don’t overcomplicate food. A good piece of fish grilledand served with a chunk of lemon and aseasonal salad, wonderful. As with all goodcooking quality and freshness of theingredients is the most crucial element, you don’t need complex recipes orlots of hard to find spices because you wantthe fresh flavour of the fish to shinethrough.”

His uncomplicated approach proved to beexactly what the public needed and after thecookery schools he launched the awardwinning FishWorks chain of restaurants anda whole string of awards and accoladesrolled in. Putting all his knowledge andadvice down on paper was another shrewdmove and his best selling cookery bookshave proved incredibly popular and havehugely increased the nation’s interest inenjoying seafood at home. The FishWorks Seafood Café Cookbook

was short-listed for the prestigious AndréSimon award whilst Mitch’s latest book, Fishhas been described as “undoubtedly one ofthe most important books of the year”(Woman & Home) and covers everything youneed to know about buying, cooking andeating the best seafood, about how fish iscaught, sustainability, how the fish marketswork and of course how to prepare and eatfantastic food. When it comes to restaurants his winning

combination of simple yet stunning recipes

Pre heat your oven to maximum.

First make the garlic butter by placing thegarlic, parsley and anchovy fillets in a foodprocessor with a splash of Tabasco. Blitzuntil you have a smooth green butter.

Place a scallop in each shell, keeping therose on. Sprinkle each one with a littletarragon, then add a tablespoon of wine toeach scallop and a tablespoon of olive oil.Season with a little salt. Then place ateaspoon of garlic butter on the top of eachscallop, sprinkle breadcrumbs over each one.

Place your scallops on a roasting dish andcook in a hot oven for 5 minutes. Thebreadcrumbs should be nicely browned, thescallops firmed up and the olive oil, butter, garlic and wine all bubbling together. Serve 3scallops to a plate or one plate of 6 to shareand get stuck in.

Buy scallops that are still in the shell and get your fishmonger to clean them foryou, reserving the cut half of the shell. Leave the rose on, these are delicious. Donot buy scallops that look milky or are sitting in a puddle of water as these willundoubtedly have been soaked and their flavour and their texture will be poor.Scallops should be slightly off white and dry, your fishmonger will know.

At that time, it was the largest commercialsponsorship ever in British polo – from anex-patriot who lives 5000 miles away. Out there, someone, somewhere cares about the plight ofthe modern English professional polo player. Atpresent, those who do succeed, do so in spiteof, not because of, the system.

The man behind it was Sir Charles Williams, who hopes his investment will “start arevolution in English polo”. The Apes Hill ClubBarbados team – Mark and Luke Tomlinson,James Beim and Ed Hitchman – is thebrainchild of Sir Charles, a highly-regarded,highly-active fellow in his Seventies who isknown as ‘COW’ both in Bajan society and inpolo circles. His life has been sport, businessand farming. He was made a knight of therealm in 2000, for exactly those things.

The family have been in Barbados since1652, expelled from the times of OliverCromwell, as punishment for being protestantswho fought on the side of the Royalists.

“We were purely agricultural and animalpeople, then land owners, fighters, warrior

people, descended from the Welsh, and thefamily has lost everything and earned thingsback again. I was one of 9 children. We werevery poor people. I knew a time when my fatherworked for 9 pounds a month, but my parentsset us the best example- a wonderful workethic. I knew what it meant to go to sleep in myschool clothes, and mummy ironed them in themorning for me to go back to school. Mymother baked bread for wealthy people, starting every morning at 3am, and my fatherworked like a slave.” Admitting that he has hadsome luck in business, COW construction is ahuge company in Barbados. He started farmingin the Sixties “Farming could not hold me - itwas too slow. I got into agricultural cultivationand building.”

And polo. Sir Charles is in good form at theApes Hill estate on the Caribbean island. TheApes Hill polo grounds looked resplendent, whilework is ongoing to complete a new state of theart golf course there. Aspects of the course aremesmerizing, with some of the jungle areaslooking like the set of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’,

Gareth Davies travels to the Apes Hill PoloClub in Barbados to meet with Sir Charles

Williams.By Gareth A Davies

There was something quite inspirational about the one million US dollarpatronage of an all-English team in both the Queen’s Cup and the GoldCup three years ago. It took the high-goal polo scene in England by

complete surprise. That sponsorship continues on into 2010.

Above: Sir Charles Williams

while the holes at the top of Apes Hill overlookboth the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. SirCharles has loved polo for almost 40 years. “Iplayed high goal polo between 1972 and 1991against and with the likes of Paul Withers, JohnHorsewell, Alan Kent, and the Hipwood brothers,Howard and Julian,” he explained. I wasparticularly friendly with Ed Moore. We playedgood polo. I played off 4 at my highest, and mytime in English polo was when quite a fewAmerican teams would come across to England.Polo was very enjoyable, and was playedcompletely differently to today’s game.”

Sir Charles concurred wholeheartedly withthe views of Howard Hipwood who lamented the

Page 58: Chesterton Humberts National Property Collection Autumn 2010

56

decline of the system for English players todevelop at the very highest level. “Howard wasspot on when he talked about British playersbeing used as “hired thugs” by patrons in highgoal tournaments. What Howard puts his fingeron is a fact. Where is the sense in hiring theTomlinsons, a Borwick or a Beim, a JohnnyGoode, or a Henry Brett, and just telling them togo out there and clear the road for Fecundo orCambiaso? Polo is not, nor should ever be, asport where you hire three to keep a highwayfree for one player. This last year it was a lotbetter, but we need to see changes. Polo is apassing game.”

In 1991, Sir Charles stopped going toEngland to play. “I must say I did admire KerryPacker, for what he did for the game, and thelevel he brought to England. And GonzaloPieres and Carlos Gracida were close friends ofmine. I’ve known them for thirty years.”

But it was a visit two summers ago whichsaw Sir Charles affected by what he saw “Polo

in England today, as I saw it recently, is allwrong. When I went to see the high goal polobeing played two years ago, there was not aBritish player among them. I was selling someof the land we have in Barbados, so I went toClaire Tomlinson, and I told Luke Tomlinsonwhat I thought of the situation and Iimmediately appointed Luke as captain of theApes Hill team and asked him to get the bestteam together to win the Gold Cup. We arespending a lot of money, and I’m not ashamedto say I hope the process will also help to sellmy land [for building plots on the new golfcourse].”

He added: “Polo has changed so much in twoways. Cowdray Park was hallowed ground, andany one man was allowed to open his peoplecarrier and sell gear. When I saw the stands andtrade fairs, I couldn’t believe it. The crowds areten times bigger, which means they are gettingsomething right, but the polo was verydisappointing. Why should British players be

forced out to play medium and low goal in theirown country? What it means is that Britishplayers are no longer aspiring to be 10-goalplayers. I see it as a real problem for the likes ofNacho Gonzalez, Malcolm Borwick, theTomlinson brothers, James Beim, Henry Brett. These are the players who will set thebenchmark for the next generation."

“I wish I had the money – I could have puttwo teams out. A year ago, I bought inArgentina, it is one of the oldest polo fields inArgentina. I know from being out there that theArgentinians are determined to beat the ApesHill team and will stop at nothing to beat them."

So, what is the target he has set the ApesHill boys ? "I firmly feel that if the Apes Hillteam reaches the semi-final or the final of theGold Cup they will have changed polo. I saw anopportunity to sell my land, but I also wanted tostart a revolution in English polo. I hope we dothat”Top : The Apes Hill polo team in action at the Queens Cup Final

Sparkle inMayfairOffering some of the world’s rarestand most valuable diamonds,LEVIEV, showcases collections ofextraordinary jewellery in their OldBond Street location.

LEVIEV

LEVIEV, the world’s most exclusive diamond

jewellery brand, has established a reputation

for offering not only some of the rarest and

most valuable gems to be found anywhere on

the planet but also the finest and most

wearable items of beautifully crafted

jewellery. Renowned for its collections of “D”

Flawless pure whites and exceptional natural

fancy coloured diamonds it continues to

make available stones of great importance

for both wearer and investor alike. One such

stone, an incredible 8.61 carat radiant-cut

Fancy Intense Green, the largest such stone

ever graded (to date) by the Gemological

Institute of America (GIA). The company is

the world’s largest privately controlled

producer of cut diamonds, headed by the

maverick, Lev Leviev, a hugely influential,

self-made diamond mogul with over 30 years

experience. With the opening of the first

LEVIEV retail store in 2006 at 31 Old Bond

Street, London, the company became a fully

vertically integrated diamond business, a

truly “world’s first” and a claim that still

stands today. Further retail expansion has

seen exclusive store locations opened in New

York, Moscow, Dubai and most recently

Singapore (Spring 2010). The retail

experience offered its clients is of paramount

importance to all who work for the company.

Keith Gerrard, LEVIEV UK Managing

Director, says: “We continually strive to offer

and uphold the very highest of standards in

both terms of product and service. It is an

ethos we are proud of and one that our

clients come to expect. It is vital to build on

our reputation for not only supplying

extraordinary items but a complete retail

package of the highest order.”

The company’s strength, attributed in part

by its unique position within the diamond

industry and extensive inventory, is further

enhanced by its ability to create exquisite

jewellery. Gerrard adds: “Our in-house

teams of designers and artisans pride

themselves on the quality of work achieved.

From an exceptional engagement ring to a

specially commissioned bespoke necklace,

no detail is overlooked. The range and quality

of stones available for their use, together

with an accumulated wealth of expert

knowledge and manufacturing skills, results

in items of breathtaking beauty and lasting

value.”

An item which aptly illustrates the

company’s pre-eminence in the fine

jewellery world is simply known as “the

LEVIEV scarf”. The necklace contains a

staggering 817 fine white diamonds totalling

just over 298 carats. Taking over 14 months

to cut, polish and match each stone

individually prior to setting in platinum.

Comments Gerrard: “This extraordinary

necklace is remarkable for several reasons,

not only for its high level of craftsmanship

and diamond content, but as a piece of

Page 62: Chesterton Humberts National Property Collection Autumn 2010

60

desirable jewellery that is comfortable to

wear in a variety of ways. It feels beautiful to

the touch, just like pure silk, however, its

weight assures the wearer of its true value!!”

Another necklace, named “Pink Majesty”

is equally remarkable for its astonishing

content and use of natural fancy coloured

diamonds. The centre-piece is one of the

world’s most unique stones; a 76.51 carat

square emerald-cut Light Pink diamond.

Surrounded by a collection of multi-coloured

diamonds and suspended from an all

diamond set chain totalling a further 53.06

carats. “The back casing of this item is also a

joy to behold” adds Gerrard, “created in rose

gold and pave set with pink diamonds the

intricate design and attention to detail is a

work of art.”

The use of pure white “D” colour

diamonds in LEVIEV’s jewellery is further

illustrated in two magnificent items. An

elegant platinum ring containing a 52.29

carat emerald-cut “D” Flawless diamond

flanked by four baguette-cut diamonds. “The

absolute purity of this diamond is reflected in

the simple setting allowing the beauty and

inner radiance of this stone to be fully

appreciated” comments Gerrard “the owner

of such an item has the assurance that only

perfection can bring.” The extraordinary

diamond earrings containing two pear-shape

“D” Internally Flawless stones weighing

33.29 carat and 31.05 carat hung from a

classic motif of marquise and round brilliant

cuts epitomises an elegant and timeless

style. “Although definitely statement

jewellery, of the highest calibre, these

earrings are remarkably youthful in

appearance and considering their precious

value not at all cumbersome” adds Gerrard.

LEVIEV’s attention to design and the use of

rare fancy coloured diamonds is evident from

the beautifully created ring forming part of

this season’s new “Peony Collection”; items

inspired from the company’s signature flower.

The intricate, multi-layered petal motif set

with fancy pink diamonds in rose gold, frame

a 1.07 carat radiant-cut Fancy Intense Green

diamond. “As an added touch of luxury this

ring contains a hidden small blue diamond

only the wearer knows” comments Gerrard

“It is this attention to detail that sets us apart

from other jewellers.”

“An item that epitomises the excellence of

LEVIEV is no better shown than with the

sublime blue diamond flower ring” enthuses

Gerrard. An extraordinary rare 2.08 carat

Fancy Vivid Blue Internally Flawless diamond

set perfectly centred amongst a collection of

eight pear-shape diamond “petals” all “D”

Internally Flawless stones totalling 9.01

carats. “It is an item of jewellery few others

can match and reinforces our brand’s

message in such a perfect way.”

“We at LEVIEV look forward to welcoming

both existing and new clients through our

doors and offering the opportunity of sharing

an unforgettable experience with you.”

Sharon Kilby discovers how Joules, one of the UK’s mostsuccessful clothingbrands, brings cool

to the country.

Living TheGood Life

Page 71: Chesterton Humberts National Property Collection Autumn 2010

69

Joules is one of those brands that instantly

conjures up scenes of the good life, naturally

beautiful families enjoying life in the big

outdoors. A wonderfully vibrant combination

of colourful fabrics and practical clothing,

the Joules brand is easily identifiable and a

must have label for those who love country

living.

One of those wonderfully inspiring tales of

entrepreneurial success Joules has captured

a market that is undoubtedly growing not

only in the UK but worldwide. When Tom

Joule started selling equestrian and country

clothes at county and regional shows back in

1980 he didn’t foresee the outstanding

success that would follow. Joules are now

considered the clothing to wear on the

country and equestrian scene. Having sold

other labels Tom understood how

uninspiring and boring other country clothing

brands were and wanted to create a

collection that was cheerful and stylish.

‘Quality clothing made to last’, the Joules

items are anything but basic and there is an

element of enjoyment running throughout

the range.

Quirky and eye-catching, Joules designs

with passion, to delight each member of the

family with details they’ll love. Heritage and

quality are what make the brand tick. In

2005 the children’s range, Little Joule, was

launched and by the end of 2008 they had 20

shops in seaside and market towns across

Britain, this rapid growth being testament to

the clothing’s successful balance of quality

and style.

This winter sees another great leap in the

Joules business development strategy with

the introduction of the new Joules Boutique

collection. A portrayal of an enticing world of

faded English country grandeur, capturing

Page 72: Chesterton Humberts National Property Collection Autumn 2010

70

the hotchpotch, shabby chic surroundings of

the forties and fifties. Beautifully reflecting

the balance between austerity and British

eccentricity the styles captures a love of the

outdoors and country sport.

This collection for women includes a

desirable ladylike aesthetic. Tweedy tailoring

comes in the form of a neat Prince of Wales

check shift dress in a sumptuous

combination of petrol blue. Joules quirky

accessories continue this feminine appeal

with frame and clasped handbags, Mary-

Jane kitten heeled shoes and delicate printed

silk scarves. The country house party

reference is also reflected in the form of

brogue style shoes, sweatshirts, stiff cotton

slacks and denim. This mannish, practical

quality contrasts beautifully with the

distinguished ladylike pieces, playing out the

contradictions of fading English grandeur.

Alongside the Joules Boutique Collection

for women, this Autumn Tom Joule is

delighted to introduce his brand new self-

titled menswear collection. The pieces are

designed for those who love British country

living, featuring tweeds, shearling and

handmade knits but fashioned with Joules’

unique signature style. The very first Tom

Joule collection captures this season’s love

of the practical and functional styling seen

on the designer runways. The look is relaxed,

washed cord and moleskin fabrics are used

in the trouser styles and the ‘Kendal’ is

Joules’ twist on the classic brogue.

The new Tom Joule collection is designed

for living. Providing a wardrobe of clothing

with durability, fitness for purpose and

attention to detail at its core. A focus on

authenticity and personality rather than

flashy luxury; quality of cloth, functional

detail and unique twists are all expressed in

Page 73: Chesterton Humberts National Property Collection Autumn 2010

71

the pieces. Tom Joule the founder of Joules

commented “The Tom Joule collection is an

exciting new addition to the Joules family and

one we hope will become a staple feature of

the modern man’s wardrobe.”

Joules have also expanded their

partnerships with department stores, such

as John Lewis, increased national

distribution channels and their international

presence. ‘We have led with our brand –

putting marketing at the heart of every

decision’ Marketing Director Ronny Helvey

said “Over the last two years we have

expanded our website and catalogue, our

international distribution and our UK trade

and retail,” he said. This core message is

delivered with a serving of the quirky Joules

sense of humour whether it’s in-store or online.

Stores are decorated and styled as a

country home using dressers and clothes

airers, roll-top baths and furnishings to

display clothing and accessories.

Ronny Helvey commented, “We have a

creative and dynamic approach to our sales

and marketing strategy – keeping everything

that we do fresh, fun and true to our brand.

We try not to compare ourselves to other

brands. Instead, we focus on our customers,

tailoring our sales and strategies to their

lifestyles. We’re not afraid to push the

boundaries a bit.”

Joules has created a collection that

embodies country living at its best, clothes in

which to live the good life. Practical,

wholesome and stylish each piece is classic,

comfortable and easy to wear. Traditional, of

course, but then there’s always the twist.

With exclusive prints, eye-catching finishing

touches and quirky little extra details, Joules

always turns heads and wins hearts.

Your Dream Home?By Tim TownsendHead of Residential property

Have you found your dream home? Whatshould you do next to be sure your dreamdoesn’t turn into a nightmare? Here are fivetips to ease the house buying process.

• Aside from instructing your solicitor whowill help you through the legal process, youshould, as a priority, consider funding, andcheck that you can afford the property. Thismay involve obtaining a mortgage or bridgingfinance and a delay in sorting this out may result in your purchase being delayed (or evenlost). You will receive an estimate of fees andexpenses from your solicitor at the beginningof the transaction. Do your maths. Rememberto factor in the cost of stamp duty land taxpayable on the transaction which can be significant.

• We always advise our clients to obtain a survey early on even if they are buying a flat. The burden of discovering any physical defectsin the property, whether the defects are readily apparent or not, fall on the buyer. Forthis reason alone, a survey is always advisable. If you are having a mortgage youcould rely on the lender’s valuation but thismay not reveal enough information about thecondition of the property to assist you in making a reasoned judgment whether to

proceed. At the other end of the scale, a fullsurvey is expensive but its cost is preferable todiscovering after you have completed yourpurchase that you need to spend tens of thousands of pounds on structural repairs youhave not anticipated and cannot afford. Acompromise is the Home Buyer’s Valuationand Survey Report. Remember this is restricted in scope, although more comprehensive than the mortgage valuation. You may be able to combine your survey withthe mortgage valuation and save some cost.

• Visit the property location at various times ofthe day and at weekends. You may find theproperty is close to a school and there aretraffic jams every weekday morning or carsparked across your drive. Alternatively, in thecountryside have a good look round to see ifthere are public footpaths which may interferewith your privacy and check that the apparently quiet lane which leads to the houseis not a ‘rat run’. This could be dangerouswhen emerging from your drive, or if you haveyoung children.

• Be especially careful, if you are buying alisted property, that any works which havebeen carried out have the approval of the localauthority conservation officer, to avoid any

nasty (and expensive) surprises after youmove in.

• Finally, if you are worried about future development near the property give the localauthority planning office a call. They should beable to answer your enquiry.

With your Solicitor’s advice and help throughthe buying process you should be able to pullall the threads together and move into yournew home, knowing it is exactly what youdreamed it would be.

More and more private individuals are lookingto purchase or sell property and other overseas assets. Many who already own anoverseas property will be paying monthly payments on a foreign mortgage. Others whohave decided to live overseas have their pensions transferred into the local currency.Foreign exchange plays a large part in manypeople’s financial planning. Many people who are purchasing or selling

an overseas property or asset are at the mercyof the currency markets and so never knowfrom one day to the next what they are eitherpaying or receiving in monetary terms. Thecurrency markets are driven by speculation, geo political events, economic fundamentalsand outlook, interest rate yield differentialsand sentiment to name a few drivers. As anexample of market volatility the UK Poundfell from 1.4500 in the summer of2007 to 1.0350 at the end of 2008.That is a movement of 28.5% or in monetaryterms, for every 100,000 Euros which neededto be purchased the cost had risen from£68,965.51 to £96,618.35. Of course, that is anextreme movement over a 16 month periodbut anyone who had planned to purchase aproperty in Europe over that period had to seriously adjust their budgets & expectations.Better news for euro buyers so far this year inthat Sterling has appreciated from around1.1000 in March to the current levels of 1.20++an upward movement of around 10% butwhere there is a winner there is a loser....inthis case those looking to sell their Europeanproperties and convert the sale proceeds backfrom Euros to Sterling are now looking at lessPounds for their money than in the spring. So what can be done to help

mitigate such market volatility &financial risks?A currency broker at Baydonhillfx will not

only guide you through the currency buying /selling process but also help you implement astrategy of risk control. Many asset sale / purchases take many months to come tofruition and one way of guaranteeing a foreignexchange price is to enter into a forward contract whereby a rate of exchange that isderived from the current rate of exchange iscarried forward to a point into the future normally for a maximum of 24 months. Thistype of contract would require a deposit. Theupside to a forward contract is that if the rateof exchange was to fall against you over theperiod then you would be protected againstthat fall as a price had been guaranteed for afixed period of time. The downside to a forward contract is the reverse. Should therate of exchange appreciate over the forwardperiod then you would miss out on that additional gain asonce again a pricehas been guaran-teed for a period oftime.Sometimes it is

beneficial not torush into the market but entrusta currency dealerto either rate watchor enter into a limitorder. A rate watchservice is where adealer is instructedto just watch themarket perhaps

with a price target in mind and should therebe any intraday spikes or falls in the value of acurrency the dealer will call and let you knowwhat is happening. A limit order is where aprice which is not currently available is givento a dealer to try and achieve. If that price isreached then the contract is automatically executed in the market. Any one or combination of the above is

available through Baydonhillfx. Baydonhillfx has helped tens of thousandsof people buy and sell international currencyover the last ten years and is now one of themajor providers of foreign exchange in the UK.We offer a bespoke, confidential service

Waterfront MewsIslington N1 Located within a conservation area & adjacent to Regent’s Canal, Waterfront Mews is a mix of one 3 bedroom & six 2 bedroom properties. Each individual property employs open plan living & dining around a striking feature staircase & is ooded with natural light from the rooftop lantern. It is through this lantern that residents will gain access to their private rooftop terrace with southern aspect & long views over Regent’s Canal. Designed by local Islington-based architects the architecture of the development reects the area’s industrial past, coupled with a contemporary urban air. e striking metal façade oers both shade & privacy, enclosing both internal & external spaces & oers a seamless cohesion to the whole development. Moments from the vibrant scene of Islington’s Upper Street yet in its own secluded enclave, Waterfront Mews oers fantastic links to leisure & commerce, e Square Mile & West End & even further beyond with a short hop to the new international gateway of King’s Cross & St. Pancras.

Frobisher CrescentBarbican EC2A unique modernist development of 69 studio, 1, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments located in the centre of the iconic & Grade II Listed Barbican complex. e Barbican Estate was originally conceived by architects Chamberlain, Powell & Bon who drew inspirations from Le Corbusier to create an urban village community devoid of trac with a church, school, library & shops. Today, the architect’s vision is nally realised with Frobisher Crescent undergoing a meticulous conversion into uniquely bespoke residences featuring stunning redesigned interiors that take the sensitivity of the Barbican’s history into consideration. e new architects have built on the design intention in a contemporary way with sleek & ecient kitchens, bathrooms & living spaces. Designed to the highest standards, the apartments at Frobisher Crescent possess many original details as well as the latest & most luxurious features you would expect from a modern City development of this stature.

A. Individual Lease Extensionse Leasehold Reform Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 (as amended) enables qualifying leaseholders to acquire a 90 year extension to the current lease with the ground rent payable under the existing lease reduced to a peppercorn as part of the process. A qualifying leaseholder must:. own a ‘long lease’ (a lease originally granted for a period in excess of 21 years);. have owned the lease for at least 2 years. It is possible for the existing qualifying owner who is in the process of selling a leasehold at to submit a lease extension claim (by formal Notice) and then assign the claim to the purchaser who will complete the purchase of the lease extension after the sale of the at. e purchaser, in this way, does not need to have owned the lease for two years as the claim was made by the seller who had satised the ownership test.

B. Collective Enfranchisement (ie buying the freehold collectively)e 1993 Act also enables at owners in a block of ats to buy the freehold interest in their building. Unlike lease extensions there is no length of ownership period to be satised by at owners who participate in the purchase. However:. e block must comprise two or more ats;. At least two thirds of ats must be held on qualifying leases (leases originally

granted for in excess of 21 years);

. At least 50% of the at owners must participate in the claim;4. Any non-residential / commercial parts of the building must not exceed 25%C. Housese 1967 Leasehold Reform Act gives the owner of a leasehold house a right to buy the freehold interest in the house:. e property must be a ‘house’ and vertically separate from its neighbours;2. e leaseholder must have owned the property for at least 2 years.e 1967 Act is complex with dierent valuation rules for dierent categories of house. We can advise on the correct basis of valuation and deal with the preparation of valuation advice and negotiations with the landlord as to the price to be paid.

How can we assist you?We have a respected team of Chartered Surveyors with specialist expertise in the leasehold reform eld, supported by our local estate agency oces.We can help you an early stage to take a proactive step to protect and enhance the value of your property.e process for both landlord and leaseholder can be time consuming and complex. We are able to provide you with sensible, realistic and cost eective advice to arrive at the right price or premium. We will work closely with your solicitors to ensure that the correct steps are taken to bring about a successful outcome.

As the lease to your house or flat reduces in length, so the value of your home deteriorates (as a proportion of its freehold or very long lease value)

Mortgage lenders and purchasers will be concerned about lease length which is an issue capable of frustrating a vendor’s sale of a leasehold house or flat.
