MOTOR RACING - BOOKS

This is the 29th annual edition of the ‘official’ book of the famous touring car endurance race at Mount

Panorama, Bathurst. In fact, there have been 31 annual books on the race produced by Chevron Publishing, on account of the 1997 and ’98 Super Touring Bathurst 1000s along with separate V8 Supercar races also being held in those years. The Great Race editions 17 and 18 reflected that category change.

V8 Supercar enthusiasts, however, were still able to keep their valuable collections intact when Chevron produced V8 Bathurst editions 1 and 2 for the 1997 and 1998 ‘split’ years. Then for the 1999 race, the V8 Supercars came back into The Great Race collection as edition number 19 - where they remain today.

The annual books started in 1981. By then the race had accumulated a rich history over 21 years, and was already firmly established as an iconic Australian sporting event, the motor racing equivalent of the Melbourne Cup,

Over 47 years at Bathurst (50 in total when taking into account the three Phillip Island races that took place before the event migrated north to Bathurst in 1963), the Great Race has captured the imagination of the Australian public as men and machine do battle against the famous Mount Panorama.

As the stature and legend of the Great Race grew, it made household names out of a host of drivers. Stars from past decades like Harry Firth, Bob Jane, Peter Brock, Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson, Colin Bond, John Goss, Bob Morris, Allan Grice, Larry Perkins and many others. Then there are today’s V8 Supercar stars, like Mark Skaife, Greg Murphy, Craig Lowndes, Russell Ingall, Steven Richards, Jason Bright, Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom, Will Davison, Rick and Todd Kelly, Garth Tander, James Courtney and so many more.

The quest to win the Holy Grail of Australian motorsport has also resulted in some legendary cars. The Ford Falcon GT-HO series and the Holden Torana XU-1s that was built to take on the big Ford, and later the V8-powered L34s and A9Xs are now considered all-time classic Australian performance vehicles. In the ’80s this tradition continued with the series of Brock Commodores, and later the early HSV Commodores.

The Bathurst 500/1000 was fundamental to the rationale behind the development of these legendary machines: without a doubt, had there been no Bathurst, none of these cars would have seen the light of day.

Chevron Publishing has captured the early Bathurst racing history with three anniversary books titled Australia’s Greatest Motor Race (the latest edition, the 40 years of The Great Race, a massive 496-page historical reference published in 2000 and which is still available today). To have started annual books, and not recorded the first 20 years would have been unforgivable - let alone the 20 years that followed.

Chevron’s Australian-based motor racing books, magazines, video/DVDs and posters are available by direct mail, or you can order them through any specialist motoring or general bookshop, or on-line at our website. Chevron’s own mail order department despatches nationwide and internationally every week - we’re only a phone call, fax or e-mail away.

A jubilant and relieved Garth Tander declared the Peter Brock Trophy to be back in its “tradi-

tional home” as he celebrated victory with co-driver Will Davison in the 2009 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama.

It was in fact the first time a Holden team has claimed the perpetual trophy named in honour of the former Holden Bathurst star driver, who died in 2006. For the past three years the Peter Brock Trophy has resided with the Ford pair of Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup.

As Tander himself said in victory, three years ago at Bathurst, and in the wake of Brock’s death barely a month earlier, the pressure had been on the Holden teams to deliver, to secure the Peter Brock Trophy for the first time. But that emotion-charged year at Bathurst, Holden fell short.

Not in 2009, however. Tander, Davison and the entire Holden Racing Team went to Bathurst on this occasion with a confidence and a steely resolve to end Ford’s winning run on the Mountain and to finally secure the Peter Brock Trophy.

It did not come easily – but it rarely does at Bathurst. It’s always tough; this is the longest, hardest race in Australia by a long way. Tander had won the race for the first time in 2000, but the eight years since then have delivered little other than heartbreak and disappointment.

Some drivers try for decades without ever getting to savour that sweet taste of victory in Australia’s longest, toughest and most prestigious motor racing contest. It’s that kind of event.

Tander and Davison had to overcome changing conditions as well as formidable opposition, and in the end Tander only made it home by a bare seven tenths of a second – a winning margin of less than one second after nearly seven hours of racing! It was the narrowest victory in the history of the race.

A great race once again, and a perfect way to celebrate the 50 year of an event that began at Phillip Island in 1960.

The annual book of the 1000km touring car enduro at Bathurst is 256 pages, all in full colour. As well as providing a Great Read on the Great Race, the book is crammed with statistics, driver bios, car race histories, lap chart of the race, driver change points, fastest laps and full details on practice, qualifying and race days.

It reads like one of those ‘Boy’s Own’ adventure stories of days gone by, but the story of this remarkable Australian is fact, not fiction. Tony Gaze has a litany of remarkable achievements to his credit resulting from his two careers: as a fighter pilot with the Royal Air Force during World War II and as a racing driver afterwards. Then there’s Tony Gaze’s motor racing career after the war: the first Australian to compete in World Championship Grand Prix motor racing. Tony Gaze’s life has been an extraordinary one and his list of achievements remarkable.

Holden’s SLR 5000, known as L34 in its Bathurst-winning race spec, was the V8 successor to the nimble Torana XU-1, and debuted by Peter Brock as he won the final two races of his first touring car championship title in 1974. But it was Colin Bond who was the star of Harry Firth’s Holden Dealer Team in the five-race manufacturer’s championship. HDT pipped the Falcon contingent of Moffat, Goss and Carter with a final victory at Phillip Island. This classic cinema film represents Aussie motor racing – seventies style. When Ford launched the Mustang in the USA back in 1964, it had no idea of the impact the “Pony” car would have. In this DVD, we retrace those halcyon days of Australian motorsport with rare race footage featuring Geoghegan, Beechey, Jane and Moffat racing door handle to door handle in brutish machines that were all about the power slide, skinny tyres and no brakes.

What followed was Australian motorsport legend. From the earliest days of the Falcon XA, to the great win at Bathurst by Goss and Bartlett against the big factory teams, to the tough days when Murray Carter was the only one battling against Holden, as well as the dominance of Moffat’s very professional team, its all here.

TROY’S STORY

Des Molloy and Dick Huurdeman look like the sort of guys who should be sedately steering a sleigh in a Santa Parade, not riding old single-banner British bikes half way across the world through some of the most difficult and remote terrain imaginable. Des’s son Steve joined this intrepid pair as a camera man and general factotum for the highs and lows of an incident-packed three month trek from Beijing to Arnhem on ‘Penelope’, a 1965 Yorkshire-made 650cc Panther, and ‘Dutch Courage’, a 1954 Norton 600. Was this idiocy or odyssey? Decide for yourself as you see their adventures and misadventures.
