Transaction of the Year

Sanofi Consumer Healthcare’s deal for exclusive OTC rights to Roche’s Tamiflu (oseltamivir) in the US wins the OTCToolbox CHi Award for Transaction of the Year. Judges said the transaction was a bold move with “huge potential”.

Sanofi announced in July 2019 that it had gained exclusive OTC rights to Roche’s Tamiflu (oseltamivir) for prevention and treatment of flu in the US. Tamiflu is currently a prescription medicine in the US where it is sold by Roche’s Genentech.

In the rest of the world, Roche will continue to market Tamiflu. Sanofi can have first negotiations for the rights to switch Tamiflu from prescription‑to‑OTC status in selected markets.

Commenting on the deal at the time, Alan Main, Sanofi’s Executive Vice President for Consumer Healthcare, said: “The US market is the largest OTC market in the world and a successful switch of Tamiflu to OTC status would support our global cough and cold strategy by expanding into flu with a sustainable point of difference in the market.”

Sanofi pointed out there was no effective OTC antiviral treatment for flu. The company said the existing OTC products only treated the symptoms of flu.

Main said that switching Tamiflu from prescription‑to‑OTC status would offer a “significant public health benefit” by “providing increased access to a safe and efficacious product for the prevention and treatment of flu”.

Impact of switching TamifluSpeaking in December 2019, Sanofi’s Chief Executive Officer Paul Hudson said two switches –

Tamiflu plus the erectile‑dysfunction drug Cialis (tadalafil) – had the potential to add EUR1 billion (USD1.1 billion) to Sanofi Consumer Healthcare’s top line.

Worldwide sales at Sanofi Consumer Healthcare reached EUR4.69 billion in 2019, down by 0.8% at constant currencies compared to 2018.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.New Zealand was the first country to switch Tamiflu from prescription‑to‑OTC status. A decade

later, Tamiflu remains a prescription medicine in most countries.

Comments from the judgesSix of the eight judges for the OTCToolbox CHi Award for Transaction of the Year ranked the

transaction first or second out of eight candidates.A transaction with “huge potential” was how Chris Bunniss of Bunniss Associates described the

deal. Noting that the transaction was “strategically very strong”, Bunniss praised Sanofi for “extracting a game changing switch from a prescription player”.

Pierre‑Antoine Bodin of Roland Berger commented that the deal was “quite a bold move” to create a new consumer healthcare category that had traditionally been prescription.

A third judge remarked that the transaction “could bring a new paradigm to the flu market, leading to market growth and driving growth for Sanofi”.

Business Development Team of the Year

Nestlé captures the OTCToolbox CHi Award for Business Development Team of the Year thanks to a series of significant deals. Judges were particularly impressed by Nestlé Health Science’s move into personalisation.

Nestlé strengthened its consumer healthcare presence through a number of significant transactions in 2019, including deals involving personalisation, the microbiome and food‑allergy prevention.

In August 2019, Nestlé Health Science announced that it was expanding into personalised nutrition by acquiring the vitamins, minerals and supplements (VMS) company Persona for an undisclosed sum. The personalised nutrition service offered by Persona is available to consumers in the US through the website www.personanutrition.com. Nestlé Health Science said it planned to extend the service into further geographic areas in future.

Persona will be part of Nestlé Health Science’s Atrium VMS business which was acquired by Nestlé in 2018.

Personalised nutrition and wellnessCommenting on the opportunity offered by personalised nutrition and wellness, Nestlé said

the retail market – which includes dietary supplements, nutraceuticals and functional foods – was expanding “rapidly” and was expected to reach USD50 billion by 2025.

On 3 January 2020, Nestlé Health Science announced it was strengthening the presence of Atrium in personalised nutrition by acquiring LivingMatrix for an undisclosed sum.

Nestlé also recently announced a strategic collaboration with Caelus Health for the development of microbiome‑based food supplements, as well as entering into a partnership with the University of California San Diego Center for Microbiome Innovation (CMI) as it seeks to develop the “next generation of health‑promoting products”.

Also during 2019, Nestlé Health Science took a stake in Before Brands, the US‑based company that specialises in early childhood allergy prevention.

Comments from the judgesSix of the eight judges for the OTCToolbox CHi Award for Business Development Team of the

Year ranked Nestlé first or second out of the eight candidates.Jeremy Puttock of Healthy Brands said the Nestlé business development team had

made acquisitions that would “pave the way towards greater development and adoption of personalisation health and wellness solutions, driving the future growth of consumer healthcare/OTC and building a connection with practitioner and patient management systems”.

Mathias Käsebier of Bannert Manlik Consultants said the move into personalised nutrition – combined with the Atrium portfolio – might be a winning move. It would allow Nestlé to enter markets outside the US with a “compelling story instead of a difficult me‑too approach”, he added.

A third judge said the range of acquisitions and deals had the “potential to transform the Nestlé Health Science business and bring new paradigms to the OTC/self‑care market”.

Innovation of the Year

Vemedia Consumer Health’s Excilor Skintag Treatment picks up the OTCToolbox CHi Award for Innovation of the Year. Judges said the product was an “easy-to-use solution”.

“Innovation in product packaging and design has enabled a doctor’s office procedure to be conducted simply and safely at home,” was the verdict of Jeremy Puttock from Healthy Brands on Vemedia Consumer Health’s Excilor Skintag Treatment.

Puttock said the Excilor Skintag Treatment was an “easy‑to‑use solution” that would bring “additional sales and growth to the OTC market”.

Ralf Sibbing commented that Excilor Skintag Treatment was a “really innovative consumer healthcare product in a previously unoccupied sector”. He added that the product expanded the “excellent dermal competence of the Excilor umbrella brand”.

Another judge noted the product “met a largely unmet consumer need with safety, speed and minimum discomfort”.

Five of the nine judges for the OTCToolbox CHi Award for Innovation of the Year ranked Vemedia Consumer Health’s Excilor Skintag Treatment first or second out of the eight candidates.

How it worksEach pack of Excilor Skintag Treatment contains one applicator, three plaster‑discs, a quick

start guide and an information leaflet. Using the applicator, a plaster‑disc ligation device is placed over the stem of the skin tag

and covered by the plaster. The plaster‑disc cuts off the bloodstream to the skin tag, resulting in it drying out and dropping off the skin inside the plaster. Removal leaves a little red dot, but Vemedia Consumer Health said this disappeared after a week.

Claims on the product packaging state that Excilor Skintag Treatment provides “Effective removal within 6 days” as well as offering “Easy home use”. Straplines also highlight that the product is “Safe & hygienic” and causes “No pain”.

According to Vemedia Consumer Health, there are few dedicated skin tag treatments so self‑treaters turn to options such as homeopathy and even razors. “The skintag category is a clear white space with a huge potential to drive business for pharmacies and offer an effective solution for patients,” comments the company.

Vemedia Consumer Health said the Excilor Skintag Treatment had been launched initially in Belgium and the Netherlands in early 2019. During the course of 2019, the product was launched in a number of other countries including Italy, Portugal, Spain and the UK.

Recycling initiative is the runner-upThe runner‑up was RB’s Health & Nutrition Recycling Program. James Hall of Jenson R+ and

OTCexperts said developing methods to “help reduce waste to landfill and increase recycling is a global action and responsibility”. “The proactive and open approach by RB to address this is a step change for industry,” he added. “It is innovative in that this is an area which is not the norm and the foresight to approach a problem in this way should be applauded.”
