ABOUT CHICAGO A CAPPELL A

Chicago a cappella is a classical vocal ensemble that moves the heart and spirit with fun, innovative concerts. Founded by Jonathan Miller in 1993, Chicago a cappella is recognized as one of the area’s most accomplished and innovative vocal ensembles. Spanning a repertoire from Gregorian chant to the Beatles and beyond, the group is known for its performances of early music, vocal jazz, and spirituals, as well as a special focus on music written in the present generation. The ensemble has introduced doz-ens of works to Chicago audiences for the first time, including commissioned works by Chen Yi and Tania León.

Chicago a cappella has toured to 11 U.S. states and Mexico and has appeared on national radio broadcasts, including American Public Media’s Performance Today. Its discography includes recordings on the Cedille and Centaur Records labels, including highly-acclaimed CDs of Renaissance and contemporary works.

Performing most usually with an ensemble of nine singers, Chicago a cappella pres-ents a series of concert programs each year in Chicago, Evanston, Naperville, and Oak Park, IL. The ensemble just completed its 18th season under founding Artistic Director Jonathan Miller, with musical preparation by Music Director Patrick Sinozich.

FR IEND OF THE YEAR : TERR I HEM MERT

Terri Hemmert has been at WXRT for over 30 years. Starting as overnight announcer and Public Affairs Director in 1973, Terri became the first female morning drive personality in Chicago in 1981. In 1992, Terri moved to the 9AM to noon time-slot, and in 2002 became host of Breakfast with The Beatles, 8 to 10AM on Sundays.

Prior to joining WXRT, Hemmert was an air personality at WCMF in Roch-ester, NY and also served as program coordinator for WGLD (currently WVAZ) in Chicago.

She has served on the Board of Directors of the Peace Museum, Facets Multimedia and other not-for-profit groups. She teaches the History of Rock and Soul in the broadcast-ing department of Columbia College Chicago, where she has taught for 30 years. She volunteers with the Inner City Teaching Corps, Latin School of Chicago, and other schools, teaching classes on the Roots of Rap, Women in Music, Classical Music’s influence on Rock and Soul and other musical topics. Terri works on music education programs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and co-hosts The Classic Encounter Series. She is also an active volunteer with the AIDS Pastoral Care Network and St. Clement Catholic Church. Hemmert has hosted Chicago’s Fest For Beatles Fans for nearly 30 years. Terri has partici-pated in both productions of Chicago a cappella’s concert Baroque and Beatles, and her contributions helped make it the most successful program in the ensemble’s history.

Terri Hemmert resides in Chicago and is a graduate of Elmhurst College with a bachelor of arts in speech.

TR IBUTE AWARD : DR . ROBERT A . HARR IS

Robert A. Harris, a member of the faculty of the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, has held the position of Professor of Conducting and Director of Choral Organizations since 1977. He has also held guest professorships in conducting at Wayne State University (Detroit), the University of Texas (Austin) and the University of South Africa (Pretoria).

Active as a conductor and choral clinician, Harris has appeared in these capacities throughout the United States; the Republic of China; in South Korea, where he was the guest conductor for Korea’s premier professional choir, the Inchon City Chorale; in Hong Kong as a guest conductor of a Festival Youth Chorale; in South Africa where he presented conducting master classes, workshops and lectures; and in Argen-tina where he presented lectures and master classes on African American spirituals.

As a composer, Harris has been the recipient of over forty commissions from various schools, churches and musical organizations. His compositions, especially those of the choral genre, have received performances throughout the United States, Europe, South America and in South Africa. His published works are currently in the catalogs of several leading publishers.

Awards and honors include an Alumni Arts Achievement Award in Music from Wayne State University; he was the recipient of the 2000-2001 Northwestern University School of Music’s Faculty Exemplar Teaching Award, and was one of three University profes-sors to receive a Northwestern University Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award for the 2001-2002 academic year. Harris also served for three years as a member of the Choral Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts and twice functioned as the panel’s co-chair. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Chorus America. Biographical entries include Who’s Who Among Black Americans, Men of Achievement (London), and Who’s Who in America.
