T-CLOCSSM Inspection Checklist

Inspect Your BikeGraphic on the right submitted by John Zolot

Reprint from previous newsletter  With the warm weather is coming it’s important to inspect your bike. The Motor Cycle Safety Foundation’s “T-CLOCS”(SM) is an excellent way to make sure your bike is road ready and safe to ride. To check the integrity of the front suspension: Get a riding buddy to help you. Sit on the motorcycle and stand it up. Keep both feet firmly planted on the ground. Have your bud-dy straddle the front forks. He should grab the forks one in each hand just below the top clamp, and give them a vigor-ous but controlled shake. Any loose or uneven movement of the forks warrants immedi-ate close inspection, and due consideration should be given to having it looked at by a pro-fessional. Finally, wash your own bike. Everyone, well most people anyway, likes a clean, shiny motorcycle. But there is a practical reason for washing it and doing it yourself. A good washing requires you to take a close and long look at all parts of the motorcycle. Details that were missed by a quick visual inspection become apparent, especially when you are hand-drying the bike. In addition, smooth flowing water, par-ticularly over the frame, may accentuate corrosion or cracks that were not obvious when the bike was dry. A well maintained and safe motorcycle makes for a better ride. Enjoy the riding season.

Tips for Group RidingSubmitted by Tom Brown in a past issue of CRNEWS Well, it’s getting to be about that time again. The annual Starved Rock Ride will kick off the riding season for most of us. There are quite a few new members to the club who may be joining us this year. These people may or may not be experienced with group riding, so I though it might be good to jot down a few basic things for folks to keep in their minds when they participate. 1. Start with some wisdom: Remember, above all, that YOU ARE RESPON-SIBLE for your safety and for your enjoyment of the day, not your ride leader, not the more experienced rider in front of you...YOU. If you feel the group is unsafe, wave “bye bye” to any other rider and just go off on your own. Have a great day and don’t give it another thought. No one holds a gun to your head to stay in this group! 2. A little more wisdom: The object of this game is to have a lot of fun with an acceptable amount of risk (with or without the group). Riding a motorcycle is a dangerous activity. “RISK MANAGEMENT” is what this sport-touring thing is all about. “TEMPTING FATE” is stupid and is what changes the inexperienced rider into an accident statistic. Don’t depend on “good luck” to get you through. Good luck is never a bad thing to have, but can’t be depended on and definitely can’t be leaned on often. Learn the skills and consciously practice them on your own. Don’t ride over your head. Group riding is not a training excersize. 3. BE PREPARED - Arrive at the ride in plenty of time with a FULL TANK and with your bike in GOOD REPAIR. Be prepared for changing weather conditions. You want to avoid becoming a cause for concern or delay for the group. Have a MAP and, if possible, the DESTINATION written down somewhere in case you get separated from the group. I always carry a bottle of water and a clean terry rag. The water is great for staying hydrated during unscheduled stops and when poured on the rag, can be used for cleaning bugs off your helmet. Stay hydrated. Drink water at every stop. 4. KEEP A DECENT INTERVAL - Don’t follow too close to the next bike. If it stops hard for an animal in the road or even a radar trap, where does that leave you? Keep this in mind even on straight, innocent looking roads and even more on tight narrow roads, especially those with questionable surface conditions. Keep 2 seconds interval minimum in good stagger conditions. Fight the compulsion to run up close to the rider ahead. It proves nothing. I’ve been to the funeral of an experienced rider who was killed when something unexpected happened while he was too close. You’re not just endangering yourself, your endangering the riders in front and behind you as well. 4. STAGGERED RIDING - Is used on 4-lane roads and wide, straight two-lanes with good shoulders. Stagger is done as follows: Everyone is to key off the rider directly in front of him. The leader picks one side of the lane or another (his choice). Rider behind picks the other side of the lane, each succeding rider picks the opposite side from the the bike in front. This way, everyone can see two bikes ahead and gets a view of the road rather than just the license plate of the next rider. If the rider in front of you is on the wrong side, you should still stagger from the rider in front of you. Hopefully the errant rider will make a correction. Then you’ll switch to the sides as well to maintain your stagger. If leader chanes sides, all the people behind change sides. Don’t take up both lanes of a divided highway. You may feel like you own the road, but you don’t. Leave room for other traffic to get around your group and be as courteous as possible. Be assertive, be decisive, but don’t be agressive. If the group is larger than 3, leader should avoid frequent lane changes. Don’t make stupid passing decisions that will draw attention to your group or cause a motorist to call in to the police. Sometimes even a safe manuever can cause alarm in other drivers. Consider this when you ride in traffic. 5. IN-LINE RIDING: When the road gets narrow and twisty, drop back and use the whole lane. Your interval should increase to about 4 seconds and you should feel free to use the whole lane for cornering (assuming oncoming cars and the road

itself will allow this). With the additional interval, it’s easier to watch the road without being transfixed on the activites and line of the rider in front. Ride your own ride. 6. THE SYSTEM FOR FOLLOWING THE ROUTE: The leader rides at a good pace. The leader slows or stops at any turn off the route or street he’s on until the rider behind can see him turn. Each rider in turn waits for the rider behind him to see the turn and then goes. This way, slower riders always know that they will not get lost even if they can’t see the rider ahead. When a turn comes, the rider ahead will be waiting at the turn. 7. LINING UP: Fast riders up front, slow riders in back. If you’re going sport-touring, try to line up in some sort of loose order that will require little or no passing later on. One experienced rider in last place as a “sweep” is a good idea when there are more than 5 bikes travelling together. It’s good if the sweep is the ONLY one travelling with bright lights on. It makes him easier to identify for the leader during breaks etc. 8. PASSING BIKES IN YOUR GROUP: When everyone knows the other’s riding style, #7 negates the need for passing others in the group, but often riders don’t know the other riders’ objectives, habits or experience levels. If you’re feeling the need for speed and the rider in front of you is more interested in flora and fauna, it’s acceptable to pass, but be VERY CONSER-VATIVE about this. SIGNAL WELL BEFORE you intend to pass. Don’t split lanes, pass on the right or expect the rider in front to change his position or pace in any way to accomodate your pass....even if he hand signals and pulls right for you to split a lane, don’t do it. If you can’t easily pass with plenty of room, just wait for a better situation or the next break, then just line up in the front of the group. Never pass the ride leader. If you’re really uncomfortable with the pace of the ride, if it’s either too fast or too slow for you to have fun, just leave it. This is done by waving “bye bye” to any other rider in the group and just pulling over or turning off the ride route. If you’re being rushed by the rider behind, hand signal for him to pass you. Do not ride over your head. Some days we feel fast. Some days we feel half-fast. No problem! Be courteous to the passer and make things as painless as possible. Let all travel at their happy pace. Avoid emotional “racing” responses, even in jest. Passing truly is fraught with enough danger, so make it drama-free for others. As you become more comfortable with higher speeds, these good habits will become vital. PASSING OTHER VEHICLES: Don’t cut it so close that you’re risking your safety and the safety of other drivers. If you need to do this to get a thrill from riding, you need to go to a track to learn more riding skill sets to practice. Get your kicks some safer way. Don’t expect other drivers to

change their speed or road position to help you pass. Do expect them to be startled, even upset by the sound of your bike as it wakes them up from slumber as you go round them. Make allowances and be courteous as pos-sible. Pass quickly and decisively. Make sure there’s room. If other bikes may be needing to pass behind you, maintain your passing speed for a while, if possible, after you pull into the right lane. Give them room. When the bike in front passes, do not assume there is room for you. Make your own decision about every pass. Don’t count on another biker to make room for you. If the room isn’t there, don’t go. Again, YOU are responsible for your safety. Riding in a group is not a license to become a passenger on your own bike. Always think and act for yourself. 9. PEER PRESSURE: The System for Following the Route, Lining Up and Conservative Passing all conspire to allow each ride member to ride at his own pace. There is no reason to feel like you are holding up a fast group. After a brisk bout of riding, it’s nice to stop by the side of the road and take in the sights. If a rider has to wait 5 or even 10 minutes for the rider behind, it’s not the end of the world for him. The worse thing that will happen is that he’ll relax and his blood pressure will go down. Perhaps he’ll get a drink of water or clean his face shield. It’s not a race. By the way, if you try and turn it into a race, you won’t be invited back. If you need to go faster or slower than you’re comfortable going with the rest of the group, just wave “bye, bye” to one of the riders and get acknowledgement before leaving. We’ll not think ill of you for this action so long as the group knows you’re gone. 10. ENJOY THE RIDE! Even when conditions aren’t what many think of as “ideal”, riding in a group is big fun. Appreciate the fact that you’re not sitting at your desk, digging ditches or home cleaning the gutters. Practice a positive, patient attitude toward drivers, your fellow riders, the weather, road conditions and all the other conditions affecting your ride. Do all you can to promote a pleasant day for yourself and the rest of your group. Most important, remember the big picture. Getting home in one piece overshad-ows any other goal you may have for the ride.

PIZZA-PIZZA MYSTERY RIDE! Last Saturday I took my new 1995 K75 RTA out for a spin to check its mileage and get my once broken shoulder back in the groove. Left St.Charles 0830 in cool almost sunny weather that went beautiful later on. Blasted out I-88 then I-80, heading for Gina’s BMW in Iowa City, stopping at a rest stop to warn Jim Woodring (Woody, ex-Laurel sales manager) I was coming. Made a simple early-season mistake of jumping on I-88 with about 65 miles on the tank and had such a good time didn’t pay much attention until the red light came on just past the last fuel stop before the Mississippi. This was Definitely a Problem so I slowed way down from the 83/85 I’d been running to about 60-ish and (just) made it to a gas pump where the 4.5 gallon tank sucked up 4.6 gallons---must have been about 20 feet from a bone dry tank. Lesson is: Always fill up before heading out. MPG on K75: 85mph=35mpg, 73mph=40mpg, 60 mph=52mpg. The Cops were out, but my gas crisis saved me an encounter with the Blackwall Tire Corps. Gina’s is a large dealership complete with patron-friendly staff, lunch table towards back of the showroom with cheese and crack-ers plus a 50-cent coke machine..when’s the last time you saw This in the Chicago area ‘cept for of course at the new Rockford BMW guys. Gina’s is worth the ride so run out there some Saturday (open to 3 PM on Sat) and take a look. Woody sold two new Beem-ers while I hung around buying new lightweight rain pants and a Gina’s teeshirt. They have a Large, Open and Friendly (are you Lis-tening?)showroom floor with lotsa new and gently used Beemers. To return I headed north towards the Anamosa museum but ran into a rain cloud and doubled back to follow US-30 Lincoln High-way back across Iowa and Illinois. You cross the muddy Miss at Davenport (best done in daylight, old industrial town) and tra-verse a wide diversity of old farm communities in both states. In Illinois save an hour to stop at the Lincoln Highway museum in Franklin Grove, IL (its on 38 midway twixt Dixon and Rochelle). This is a neat museum in a narrow, restored late 1800’s limestone building-John Haller and I were there a couple weeks ago-so/so restaurant across the street but it’s the only one for miles.. To top off this great day in the sun I wandered back through DeKalb on 30 and stopped for an excellent pizza in Maple Park. SLICES it said & Hot Damn it was great pizza, crispy thin crust. Turned out the owner/cook and his brother had graduated high school with my two oldest kids, nice friendly way to end a day full of sunshine, motorcycles, friends and food. Total miles about 430, nice day ride. Named this new/old bike Elvira to continue the tradition & will rerun that story next month if ye editor remains in his desperate-for-articles mode (mood?). Who KNOWS what mood/mode he’s in? Where In The World Is Racer Tom this week?

A Blast from the Past!

LONGTIME CLUB MEMBER BOB SAXER PASSES AWAYSubmitted by Mike Bettenbender

Bob Saxer was a dedicated Chicago Region BMW club member. He was actively involved in most interest groups within our organi-zation. It seemed like he showed up at every event and contributed his time and energy to almost all of our activities. A motorcycle man and sidecar enthusiast, Bob exuded a positive and efferves-cent personality. He was very informative and instructive to those of us who needed help, especially newer members. He authored many articles for our newsletter and was always sharing on motor-cycle related interests he uncovered. Bob was an active volunteer with Shriner’s Hospital in Chicago, transporting ill and handicapped children and their families to the hospital for care. Bob was also a member of the DeKalb, Illinois chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Bob was 80 years old at the time of his passing, on February 14th. He is sur-vived by his wife, Linda; his sister, Dr Judy Ryan; his brother, Rich-ard; eight children; and twelve grandchildren.

78TH STURGIS BLACK HILLS RALLYAugust 4-13, 2018(Distance from Chicagoland apx 897 miles)http://sturgismotorcyclerally.com/ Sturgis is the big dad-dy of all bike rallies, receiving some 500,000 faithful on their pilgrimage to this mecca for motorcyclists. They come from towns near and far and across the globe, ac-counting for all 50 states and much of the untamed world. In 1938, the rally was kickstarted by local Indian dealer, Pappy Hoel and his wife, Pearl. Back then, Sturgis was a sleepy cowtown on the South Dakota prairie, off the edge of the Black Hills and buried in obscurity. Hoel and a few of his friends decided since there was nothing else better to do, they may as well race each other. Whether it was a handful of bikers just wanting to have some fun or a deliberate act of promotional genius, the great gathering was born. Motorcyclists are always looking for a place to ride and Sturgis, perhaps because of its remoteness and the nearby stunning natural beauty, became holy ground, the Shangri-La of all biker destinations. By the 75th An-niversary rally, some 740,000 true believers poured in, filling every road in and out of town with the great roar and joy of countless motorcycles representing most every year, make and model, and a few two- and three-wheeled contraptions you’ve never imagined.Enthusiasts ride in for the camaraderie and unabated fun, but there is something more about Sturgis that goes fur-ther than its sea of vendors, countless concerts, almost-anything-goes private campgrounds, wooly saloons, in-ternational bike shows, factory fleets offering test rides, and scenic rides into the Badlands or to Devil’s Tower and parts unknown. There is a vibe to Sturgis not equalled by any other rally. This is a safe and friendly, all-are-wel-come event where attitudes are checked at the state line and everyone just wants to have a good time. Even the cops are alright and have been known to offer a tip or bit of local history. Sturgis is a spectacle made of machines, but enjoyed by men and women from every walk of life.
