DRAMATIC FASHION

Both of Northwestern’s wins over Air Force happened in dramatic fashion. In game two against the Falcons, the Wildcats fell behind 6-0 before scoring seven-unanswered runs to win 7-6. The rubber match on Sunday went to extra innings and junior Connor Lind won the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th.

UNSTOPPABLE ERRO

Freshman Alex Erro continues to lead the Wildcats at the plate. Erro has a team-best .340 batting average this season, which ranks him 10th among all Big Ten batters. The Miami, Florida, native has only struck out six times in 100 at-bats, which ranks him 22nd nationally – third among freshman - in the toughest to strikeout category. Erro had a team-high 17-game hitting streak snapped on March 24 in game two of a doubleheader against Indiana.

MASHING IN MARCH

Three players have turned it up at the plate in the month of March. Matt Hopfner (24), Alex Erro (23) and Connor Lind (20) have all collected 20-or-more hits in 17 games during the month of March. Hopfner and teammate Joe Hoscheit have each tallied six extra-base hits during the stretch. Hopfner has recorded five doubles and a triple, while Hoscheit has four doubles and a pair of home runs. Hoscheit is responsible for driving in a team-best 14 runs in the month.

HOPFNER, HOSCHEIT HEAT UP

Since Northwestern opened Big Ten Conference play on March 24, seniors Matt Hopfner and Joe Hoscheit have increased their performances at the plate. The veterans are the only two players on the roster with 10-or-more hits in the seven-game stretch. Hopfner is batting .448 with 13 hits, including four doubles and a triple, and boasts a .655 slugging percentage. Hopfner has reached base in nine consecutive games. Hoscheit is hitting .385 since the #B1GCats first game against the Hoosiers. The Northwestern left fielder has 10 knocks with three doubles and a home run to go along with seven RBIs.

PITCHING PROFILED

Northwestern pitchers had a good week (March 27 – April 2) on the bump, helping the Wildcats to a trio of victories. Air Force entered the weekend series against Northwestern ranked fourth nationally in batting average with a .331 mark. The Wildcats’ pitching staff limited the Falcons to a .287 batting average in the series.

Senior Cooper Wetherbee started against Chicago State (March 29) and went a career-high seven-scoreless innings to lead Northwestern to its first shutout win since May 2015.

Wetherbee was efficient in his seven innings of work, only allowing four hits and two walks, while striking out one in the 26 batters he faced.

Freshmen Matt Gannon and Josh Levy combined for a solid outing in Sunday’s series finale win over Air Force, while classmate Sam Lawrence had a pair of scoreless-relief appearances against Chicago State (March 29) and Air Force (April 1). Gannon made the fifth start of his career on Sunday and went 5.0 innings, collecting thee strikeouts and only allowing one run. Josh Levy relieved Gannon in the sixth and pitch 6.0 frames allowing one run on four hits and striking out three to earn the win for the Wildcats.

Sam Lawrence made two relief appearances last week and pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball, only allowing four hits in the two appearances.

LAST TIME…

Northwestern dropped a heartbreaker the last time they played at Curtis Granderson Stadium. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of ninth, UIC’s Brandon Gibis took a pitch back up the middle off Pete Hofman to give UIC a 5-4 walk-off win over Northwestern on May 4, 2016. Matt Hopfner, Joe Hoscheit, Willie Bourbon and Ben Dickey each tallied a single in the contest.

Northwestern and Illinois State last met in Port Charlotte, Florida, as part of the 2016 Snowbird Classic. The Wildcats tallied 10 hits in the effort, but fell to the Red Birds, 10-4.

KEEPING IT IN-STATE

Northwestern just concluded a 12-game homestand at Miller Park. Northwestern is in the midst of playing 23 consecutive games in the state of Illinois. The Wildcats travel to UIC (April 4), Bradley (April 12) and Illinois (April 14-16) and play host to Illinois State (April 5), Iowa (April 7-9), Western Michigan (April 11) and Milwaukee (April 18) during the stretch. FRESHMEN OF THE WEEK

Both Alex Erro (Feb. 27) and Hank Christie (March 6) have been tabbed as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week this season. Erro earned the honor after batting .700 over the course of three games at the Mule Mix Classic (Feb. 24-26). He boasted an on-base percentage of .769 and a slugging percentage of 1.100 with three multi-hit games and finished the weekend with seven knocks. Christie was named the conference’s top rookie the following week after he threw a complete-game at Santa Clara and only allowed one run on six hits, while striking out four and not walking a batter.
