In an effort to preserve and maintain the springs in the city of Sulphur Springs, Oklahoma, members of the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes met with the United State government in March 1902. Members of these two tribes agreed to cede land to the government and in an act of congress Sulphur Springs Reservation, a 640-acre tract that protected the land's known natural springs, was created. In 1906 another act of congress officially changed the Reservation's name from Sulphur Springs Reservation to Platt National Park. The name change honored Connecticut Senator Orville Hitchcock Platt, a member of the Committee and Indian Affairs, who contributed much to the cause of Indians. To fully acknowledge visitors’ interest in the park and the park's expanding features, Platt National Park became Chickasaw National Recreation Area in the 1970s. This collection contains documents relating to resource management records of Platt National Park through its name change in 1976 to Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

Scope This collection contains the resource management records of Platt National Park from 1901 until 1976 when it became Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Included in this collection are correspondence, memorandums, notes, reports, manuscripts, and photographs relating to the management of the park.
