2017 LENT COURSE Ash Wednesday this year falls on 1st March, and we will hold our usual 10am and 7pm Team Services of a Eucharist with the opportunity to receive the sign of the Cross in Ash. This ritual of ‘ashing’ is symbolic of our intention to follow Christ, at whatever cost, through Lent. During Lent we will be running our special Lent Courses and Addresses. This year we will all use the same Course, entitled “Receiving Christ”. It is the latest of the ‘York Courses’, produced by a strong team of ecumenical church leaders. The principle contributors this year are the Bishop of Leeds (Nick Baines) and a former President of Methodist Conference (Ken Howcroft). The 5 Sessions consider 5 different ways in which we can receive Christ, in practice, in our lives:

1. Receiving Christ : as children of God (John 1: 12) 2. Receiving Christ: in the stranger and the needy 3. Receiving Christ: in Holy Communion 4. Receiving Christ: through prayer and fellowship 5. “Christ in you – the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27)

Everyone can purchase a Course Booklet (£3.50), which includes interesting and challenging Quotations, and stimulating Questions on the topic. Advance Orders through our Administrator (01297 443763 or [email protected]) would ensure you get the booklet in good time! We will listen to a CD, with contributions by various church leaders, and guarantee plenty of time for discussion! The venues / times: Mondays at 2.30pm (starting 6th March) - “Amber Rock”, Blackpool Corner (Freda’s house) Wednesdays at 7pm (Address in context of Compline) – Starting 8th March at Michaels, Lyme Regis Thursdays at 2.30pm (starting 2nd March) – venues around Chideock (to be confirmed) IF there is interest, we might run another of these Courses for Charmouth / Lyme Regis. These Lent Courses are always a highlight of Lent for me – they could be for you, too! Revd Stephen Skinner

CHIDEOCK CHATTERS … I started ‘Chideock Chatters’ a while ago for women to get together, have a chat, a glass of wine and meet others. Whilst there are lots of groups meeting during the day, there wasn’t anything for working ladies or ladies who have other commitments in the day time. So we meet in the evenings! The group has been a success and we have a ‘get together’ in one of the local pubs or the village hall every 6 weeks or so.

If you would like to join in and come to a ‘get together’, please email or phone me and I will put you on the mailing list. [email protected] tel no. 01297 489996 COMMUNITY POLICING … I am your local PCSO and should you wish to contact me: PCSO Luke White E-mail: [email protected]

Chideock W.I. monthly meeting Report held on Tuesday 3rd January 2017 Chideock WI met for their first meeting of the year on January 3rd. The President Mary Rogers gave a welcome and a New Year greeting. Mary was pleased to welcome two new members, two returning members and one visitor. Reminders were given for planned activities to take place in January. The Natter lunch, Craft afternoon, Lunch time friendly skittles, menfolk and visitors welcome, Walking Group and Book Club. After discussing the annual suggestions for WI Resolutions a brief summary was given on each topic. A democratic vote was taken to determine which resolution would be submitted for the final country wide decision. After tea with cakes kindly made by Gloria Ritson it was time for an Auction of Christmas gifts we would rather not have. We were pleased to welcome Eric Tweedle as Auctioneer for the afternoon. A variety of articles, unwanted by some but useful to others soon came under the hammer as members outbid each other, raising money for our community funds. Everyone agreed that it was a fun way to start the New Year. Eric was thanked by Mary Rogers for the superb way he conducted the auction and it was suggested that for an undertaker he made a very good auctioneer. Chideock WI is waiting to welcome more new members in 2017. Why not come as a visitor and give it a try? Iris jones Chideock WI.

Spotlight Article I am writing this in the post Christmas/ New year period. Christmas is a great time in this country. Although the run up to the festivities might produce some angst and hassle, when it arrives most of us know how to enjoy ourselves. We spend plenty of time preparing for the great day, writing cards, putting up decorations, buying and wrapping presents, making sure there is plenty of food and drink in the house and putting barbed wire around the Christmas tree to keep the grandchildren away! (Only joking!) Then there is carol-singing, decorations to admire in the church and crib services to attend. In the New Year comes the reckoning. The results of those hours of self-indulgence usually need some counter measures and it seems the older you get the more counter measures are needed. Perhaps that is why new year resolutions were invented- not so much to do with new beginnings, more to do with countering the after effects of Christmas. Diets, giving up alcohol etc. are all tried in the hope that the body will go from a bloated feeling to slender trimness. We also have addictions to other various things. For instance, an addiction to gossip. This is the enjoyment of listening to juicy chunks of hearsay about other people, and then passing it on without bothering to verify whether or not it is true. Often no harm is meant by gossiping but harm often results, either directly by causing distress to those talked about if the gossip reaches their ears, or indirectly by causing undercurrents of malice or discontent of untruth within the community. Gossip is an undermining hobby and one best left well alone by Christians. Even the 10 commandments warn against gossip ‘Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour’. Unfortunately although it is easy to condemn gossip it is much less easy to give it up, even as a result of a New Year resolution. The is a lot of pressure to indulge in gossip, especially in small and close-knit communities. Other addictions can sadly include hypocrisy, the desire for wealth and material possessions and power, as seen in bullies and the abuse of one’s position. The problem of addiction for human beings is that we are slaves to it. Whatever we might wish to the contrary, the addiction takes over and we are completely powerless within it’s clutches. We can’t help ourselves. In St. Paul’s words ‘for what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing’. (Romans 7 v 19) Fortunately there is a way out of this mess, and we can be helped, all of us. No matter what our addiction, we can be released from it so that it has no further power over us. We are released through Jesus who is the only one able to lift the slave chains from us. As the writer to the Hebrews said ‘because He Himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.’ We have only to ask and then to work with him by keeping in contact with him through prayer and by opening ourselves to allow him to work within us. In that way we will have a very happy New Year indeed and find that we can keep every New Year resolution we ever made, because we have The Lord with us, on our side. Jim Pettifer LLM

Chideock Village Hall Fund Appeal The CVH Committee has launched this appeal to help us finance essential improvements to the hall. After recent upgrading of hot water supply to the kitchen it was noticed that the kitchen was in a bad state of disrepair and the Village Hall Committee undertook to assess the situation with the intention of totally refurbishing the kitchen. In discussion with major hall users we took their advice to the layout of the kitchen and new equipment needed. We have now obtained competitive quotes for replacing the cupboards, stainless steel worktop, a new floor and washable wall cladding plus new larger cooker, commercial dishwasher and refrigerator. This refurbishment has also been discussed with DCC Environmental Health and their input has been most helpful. We are hoping that this will provide hall kitchen users with a modern, hygienic and safe working environment. The total cost to refurbish the kitchen is approximately £17500 which includes for new equipment etc but installation would be by volunteers from Chideock. We have gone out to obtain grants towards this kitchen and currently have been successful with a grant from Gannet Foundation for £4000 and are awaiting a response from a number of other grant funding authorities. We have limited reserves that we can draw on but we will still need additional money to make this essential refurbishment happen. In addition following our recent internal Health & Safety review it was highlighted that several areas to the hall needed urgent attention. As part of this review we intend to replace the old wooden outward opening entrance doors (accident waiting to happen) with modern doors having a vision panel. Also the steps up to the hall are very dangerous and are only half a step deep, these are to be replaced with a concrete platform at the same height as the hall floor with new steps down to path. This platform will have hand railing all around to assist ease of access. In addition the rear escape route to be repaved with additional hand railing as necessary. Also we will fit finger guards to all internal doors. This Health & Safety work we have estimated to cost in the region of £6500. We have gone out separately to other authorities in the hope of obtaining funds for this H&S work scheduled for later in 2017. We are hoping that Chideock residents join us in raising this funding for these two projects which we believe will make the hall more viable and attract in the long term extra revenue. We will be holding many fund raising events throughout the year which we trust you will be able attend. We hope you will be generous with your donations towards two major projects but any contribution large or small would be most gratefully accepted. However, where ever possible we would ask if this can be gift aided and forms will be available from Treasurer Roger Carey at 2 Pettycrate Lane (01297 489782). For further information please do not hesitate to contact the village hall Chairman Richard Benjamin on 01297 489298. All donations may be handed to Roger Carey or Richard Benjamin and will be acknowledged as soon possible.

Update from The Clock Happy New Year Chideock, let’s hope it is a happy, healthy and prosperous one for us all. So, things are gradually settling down now and life is starting to get back to some sort of normality, if there is such a thing. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all so very much for your kindness and support over the last 18 months, without which we simply wouldn’t have made it through the most horrendous time of our lives. There have been a few misconceptions as to where your kindness and generosity was spent so we would like to take this opportunity to finalise how the fundraising went and how the funds where spent. NFU paid in the end £297,895 against a policy worth £569,000. The total rebuild figure came in at £521,000, so as you can see we had a shortfall of some £224,000. Barclays kindly allowed us a loan of £150,000, which bearing in mind there were no assets or any income to secure the loan against, was a very generous offer. So, we are down to a shortfall of £74,000. Family then helped us out with loans totalling £35,000, which means the remaining £39,000 was funded by the generosity of friends, villagers, holidaymakers, local businesses, fellow licensed trade personnel & suppliers. Hopefully, as you can see from the above breakdown, every single penny raised, by whatever means, went towards rebuilding your local. Please note that the money raised from the cream tea afternoon kindly held by Sally and Jerry was the only money that was spent elsewhere. It was stipulated by them that this money was to be solely used for a family holiday and the girl’s diary of this trip was duly put up in the tea room upon our return. We hope this clears up any lingering concerns or misconceptions that you may have. We hope that we can move forward in 2017, putting the last 18 months where they belong, in the history books, and we look forward to seeing you all soon. With all our love and heartfelt thanks from The Clock Family x

LOST SHEEP One of my childhood memories is of awkwardly manipulating my long legs down onto a wooden kneeler rail during morning service in order to chant along with the rest of the congregation what was called The General Confession. It was intended to be an expression of faith and truth which recognises that sin hinders our understanding of the things of God. Right at the start of that confession we chanted ‘We have erred and strayed from thy ways like LOST SHEEP … and … we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.’ This certainly describes the demise of many of our churches today. Much has been written and discussed about the present demise of church congregations both here and in the USA … many of our local churches are struggling, some have closed. Shouldn’t we now be asking ourselves the question: what was it that prompted our grandparents to fill our churches in the mornings and in the evenings? As with other things that go wrong there is always merit in looking back to the old days in order to monitor the changes. Perhaps if we were able to look realistically at the way the church does things nowadays we might see that our structured services are a long way from the pictures that Jesus paints in the Gospels. The prophets of old needed to enquire of God in order to know how to proceed ... if we don’t ask then we won’t know what it is that we should be doing. It was the bold preaching of yesterday’s great evangelists that filled our churches night and mornings. Their enthusiasm came from their individual repentance encounters with God, they knew the leading of The Holy Spirit and only ever preached what their prayer enquiries had revealed. Sadly, such preaching passion is rare these days as ministers up and down our land allow themselves to be swayed by political correctness. In so doing many avoid the challenging teachings of Jesus in the Gospels resulting in their people not understanding the importance of The Cross or that without repentance no one will get to heaven. Many of our congregations are confused about The Day of Judgement, creation or the gifts of The Spirit, etc. In Romans chapter 1 verse 16 Paul tells us about himself when he boldly declares: ‘I am not ashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.’ It seems to me that nowadays many of our preachers are ashamed of the Gospel and perhaps that is because they aren’t enquiring of God as to what their hearers need to hear. Yesterday’s preachers primary aim was to please God and to encourage their hearers … The ‘Lost Sheep’ to seek their place in heaven and know forgiveness in this life. A major problem in churches in the USA stems from the idea of what we might call: shortcut repentance. In the preoccupation of dwindling incomes many churches invite fast track membership by telling people to read a four-line repentance statement. Such procedures do not please God … they remind me of the failure of many English churches at the time of the Billy Graham Crusades. From the outset, it was agreed that after a person’s verbal commitment that the local churches would follow up with the essential repentance ministry. Because many churches didn’t really understand the significance of that repentance, they didn’t do that essential follow-up ministry; resulting in a rather pathetic 2% conversion rate. You and I will meet people who claim that they are Christians because they have been to a Billy Graham Crusade … or that they are Christians because they go to church … or that they are Christians but that they don’t need to go to church every week or read The Holy Bible every day. Jesus warns us that there will be people in every generation ‘Who climb into the sheep pen by some other way’ (John 10). I am fast coming to the conclusion that Church Leaders don’t emphasise the importance of daily Bible reading lest the sheep should discover just how far the worship patterns of the Early Church have degenerated. And where is the church growth nowadays? We find church growth wherever the patterns of the Early Church are adopted … in the Charismatic Fellowships. They might not meet in a church building but their leaders seek the guidance of The Holy Spirit and like the great evangelists of the past the conversion rates of their hearers can be as high as 85% !!! that’s my kind of church

CHIDEOCK LIFESAVERS Now that Chideock has a defibrillator at The George Inn on the main A35 road, members of the community have been learning how to use it and how to carry out CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). At two events in the village hall 35 people watched a British Heart Foundation video and then got on to their hands and knees to practise on manikins. They learnt the three vital tasks of CPR - CALL, PUSH, RESCUE. Call 999, give 30 pushes on the patient’s chest and then two rescue breaths. Helen Long, our First Responder, was there to help and advise and everyone left feeling confident that if anyone suffered a cardiac arrest in Chideock there would be help at hand.

The kit for the training sessions was supplied by the British Heart Foundation as part of their Nation of Livesavers campaign. Across the UK, there are over 30,000 cardiac arrests outside of hospital every year and 80% of these happen in the home, but the survival rate is less than 1 in 10.

Put simply, thousands more mums, dads, grandparents and children could be saved every year if more people learnt lifesaving CPR skills.

If you would like to borrow a copy of the CD and a manikin on which to practise CPR at home then please contact Heather on 01297 489677 or [email protected]

CHIDEOCK SOCIETY Our last event was very well attended, and a sell-out. Kate Adie was a brilliant speaker and kept us fascinated with her presentation on "Women on the Home Front". Her description of life in Dorset Villages before the First World War was in stark contrast to the many comforts we enjoy today and drew a vivid picture of how so many women and girls had to keep the land farmed, children fed and risk their lives in factories and hospitals to support the war effort. Equally interesting were the answers she gave to many questions regarding her work as BBC War Correspondent, author and broadcaster. The Chideock Society are extremely grateful to all those members who helped make the evening a success ,Jean Jones, Sian, Jemima, Lyn Crisp and Sally Coade for refreshments, Pam and Tony Fuller for the Raffle , Antonia from the Book Shop Bridport (who provided and sold ALL Kate's books) Richard Benjamin for warming up the Hall, Sal Robinson for operating the projector, to Mr and Mrs Colville for researching and giving a lovely vote of thanks and especially to Kate Adie for a very enjoyable evening. Kate Geraghty presented her with a copy of the Society's Millennium Book 'A Wander Through Chideock', and she has promised she will return to see for herself some of the places where Chideock men and women made their contribution and sacrifice in the First World War, (especially the Chideock Egg Lady, Chrissie Squire). Someone observed on leaving, 'She's a hard act to follow', but we have some events in the 2017 which we hope will encourage you to join us. We are delighted to announce that we are able to return in February to the newly restored Clock House Inn, for our annual Skittles and Vittles. Watch out for details on posters in our posh new notice boards. And two more presentations on village history and the R.N.L.I. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ New permanent residents are reminded that they may obtain their own FREE copy of 'A Wander Through Chideock' from 01297 489422. It is full of photos and histories of the village and its' residents, past and present. Parish Maps and prints of details from the History Board are on sale at Moore's Bakery, Morcombelake or from 01297 489422.

Chideock Parish Council News. Have /you Had Your Say on the Dorset Clinical Services Review?? The Dorset NHS Clinical Commissioning Group is consulting on proposals that could mean changes to local healthcare. These changes will affect every resident of Dorset and it is important that you understand the preferred proposals and provide them with your opinions on the proposed changes. Information about the proposals and an online version of the consultation can be found at https://www.csr.dorsetsvision.nhs.uk/ Paper copies of the proposals and survey are available at libraries. Deadline for responses, both by post and online, is 28 February. New Salt / Grit Bin. The Parish Council has purchased and installed a further salt / grit bin which is located at the junction of Seahill Lane and Cumbrey Lane. The Parish Council thanks Robert Duke and Mike Darby for helping with the installation. There are now 5 salt / grit bins in the Parish: -

North Road near Hollow Cottage on the triangle of land at the northern end of Hell Lane, North

Chideock upper Sea Hill Lane, between the Pettycrate Lane and Ridwood Ridwood lower Sea Hill Lane at the junction with Cumbrey Lane.

Anyone may take salt / grit from these bins for use on the public highways – it must not be used on private driveways etc. Dorset County Council tops up the bins in the autumn – any further top-ups must be paid for by the Parish Council. Come and Have Your Say at a Parish Council Meeting. The Parish Council exists to represent YOU, the residents of Chideock, Seatown and most of North Chideock, and is funded by a small part of the Council Tax which you all pay. There is a “Democratic Period” at every meeting. So, if you have got something on your mind which you think the Parish Council should know about and / or do something about, then come along and tell councillors about it. Parish Councils have few powers, but they can, and do, try to get those who do have the powers to do what needs to be done. During the winter Chideock Parish Council is meeting at 10:00 am on the last Tuesday of the month but the meetings will be at 7 pm when the lighter evenings are with us again. There is no meeting in August or December. …/continued

Chideock Parish Council (continued) … Obscured Road Signs. A reminder that it is the responsibility of the owner or occupier of land or property to ensure that vegetation growing on their land does not obscure any road traffic sign. Clearing vegetation near a road, ditch, brook or river. Please ensure that any bushes / trees / brambles etc. overhanging pavements / footpaths are cut back to allow pedestrians to safely walk along without going onto the highway to avoid this vegetation (This is particularly necessary on narrow lanes without footways.) Also please make sure that when strimming banks or pruning hedges/trees close to a public highway, ditch, brook or river, all detritus is removed and not allowed to block up drains/gullies/culverts or fall into the ditch, brook or river. Clear a Drain! When you are out walking on any of the side roads and you see a drain blocked or partially blocked by leaves, mud or other debris then please give it a bit of a clean with your boot or stick. DCC Highways are doing their best but there are an awful lot of drains in Dorset, not to mention potholes etc. If you think that the drain is blocked inside or find another Highway problem then let DCC Highways know, either by phone on 01305 221020 or via the dorsetforyou.com website, or contact a member of the Flood Group or the Clerk. Do not attempt to clear blocked drains on the A35. Contact Connect on 01404 823381 or a member of the Flood Group or the Clerk. DIAL A FRIEND – COASTAL CLUSTER Maybe you know of someone, or you happen to be that someone, who lives alone and has little social contact. Are you aware of what is available? Do you live in the Chideock, Morcombelake or Lyme Regis areas and would like even a brief visit, maybe simply for a talk. We are members of a Team from these local churches. Would you like to meet us and see what we can share together? If you would then please just call Anne: 01297 442 558; Ann: 01297 489 532. Carols at St. Giles On Sunday 18th December a full church enjoyed the traditional carol service with the augmented Christmas choir. Thanks to the generosity of everyone present a collection for the British Red Cross Syrian Winter appeal resulted in a cheque for £550 being sent. Our heartfelt thanks go to all who contributed to this worthwhile cause. Donations of food for the Cupboard Love food bank are still being collected in the box in the church. No perishable goods but tins and cereals etc are welcome. Our thanks to Diane Benjamin who takes the goods to Bridport each week. Jim Pettifer LLM
