Chieftain Web Crew By Mackenzie Spears Did you know that WEB stands for “where everybody belongs?” This year there was a lot of chieftains chosen. Their names are Brooklynn, Ellie, Brianna, Hailey, James, Lexi, Abby, Skylar, Jordon, Lexi S., Taylor, Kayden, Logan, Garrett, Jacob, Lulu, Nikki, Chris, Andrew, Anna, Karl, Kaylee, Maddy, Seth, and Morgan. That’s a lot! Chieftains are selected 8th grade students that are mature and want to help with school and out of school activities. Although WEB stands for “where everybody belongs” it is a new program this year that is added on. It is a middle school orientation and transition program that welcomes 5th graders and makes them feel more comfortable throughout the first year of their middle school experience. This is a yearlong transition program with four components that contribute to its success. These components include: Middle School Orientation- Web leaders and 5th graders start building the mentor relationship and receive information about how to be successful in middle school. Academic Follow Ups- Web leaders support 5th grade academic success and character development through several different classroom visits. Social Follow UPs- Web leaders and the 5th graders get to connect outside of the classroom at social events to increase student engagement and promote a positive school climate. Leader Initiated Contacts- Web leaders and their 5th graders connect on a more individual basis. This program will help make the kids more confident while getting use to middle school. This will also help the web crew work on responsibility and problem solving. Students will also help with assemblies and other school wide activities. With Web it is based on maturity and responsibility with a group of kids. Chieftain News

These components include:

Middle School Orientation- Web leaders and 5th graders start building the mentor relationship and receive information about how to be successful in middle school.

Cheering for Girl Sports?

Written by: Kaylee Crandall

Have you ever wondered why we do not cheer for girl

sports? I have! Cheerleaders are there to encourage the boys, and

girls need encouragement too. I know this because I was on the

school basketball team. There was a time when we were losing

and we really needed some encouragement.

I surveyed fourteen people and eleven agreed we

should. Three said we should NOT. Kendra Bush was on the

basketball team with me. She agrees that cheerleaders should

cheer for girl sports. People think that girls cheering for girls is

strange. Why? Some schools do not hype up girl sports enough.

“If we performed at girl sports, it would make it a more exciting

atmosphere,” quotes a cheerleader at Devil’s Advocate. In my

opinion, cheerleaders at a girls’ basketball game would be more

exciting. What do you think? Should we cheer for girl sports at

West Cottonwood Junior High?

Mr. Fuller at West Cottonwood Junior High says, “We

absolutely should, but what if there are cheerleaders that want to

be on the basketball team as well?” He also thinks cheering at a

volleyball game would be really exciting.

Our principle at WCJH says “I think that we should

because girl sports deserve as much attention as boy sports.”

This concludes my argument about why cheerleaders

should cheer for girl sports. I hope that this has changed your

perspective about this topic!

A Review on Bones

By: Isabelle Limon

I am doing a TV review on the show Bones. Personally I love that show. I have watched it all the way through twice. The casting is great and the murder stories that they solve are amazing. The main character of the TV show, Bones, is Emily Deschanel who plays Temperance Brennan (Bones).

The show Bones was made on September 13, 2005. The show’s setting is in Washington DC. The shows purpose is to teach the viewers more about your human body and science. The show has 12 seasons in it and each season has about 21 episodes. There are in total 246 episodes in all.

The show is based on forensic anthropology and forensic archaeology. Forensic anthropology is the study of the human bones and skeletal remains usually for the FBI. Forensic archaeology is the study of archaeological methods and principles within a legal context. To become a forensic scientist, it usually takes about 8 years of college. The 206th episode of Bones is the episode with the most forensic tools used for real investigations in real life. For instance, in that episode they have to use the Angulation which is a real time graphic simulator that can recreate what would have happened in the murder and enter specifics that can vary with what happened.

Shasta County Sheriff

By Mackalyn Smedley

Service with pride and excellence is a sheriff. Sheriffs only have one job and that is to protect Shasta County people. Every day there are over 300 calls. They respond to each call and solve each problem with pride, confidence, and bravery. Unlike us, they don't have a choice to go to each call, they have to.

You can't just become a sheriff you have to have a calling for it. When they go to each call they are risking their life for us. Everyday sheriff tells him or herself, “I can be brave and put myself in danger and change the world.” Some of the jobs of a sheriff is jail duty, graveyard, and patrol. Jail duty is where you are down at the jail making sure everything goes right. Graveyard is where you work all night long taking calls, you must need a lot of coffee for this job. Last is patrol. Patrol is when you just drive around making sure everything goes right. A range master is someone who trains other officers to use firearms. A range master has to put in a lot of effort to be able to have this job. They also have to go through cool trainings, like going into a dark room and finding your target. You also have to lay on you back and hit your target perfectly. Last, when you are a range master you have to hit every target because one missed target can take your life. In conclusion, no matter how small or how tall you are, you can accomplish your dream of being a sheriff, you just have to be brave and outgoing.

Lamborghini By Jack Santos

Lamborghini was officially established in

1963 in Santagati Bolognese, Italy, and the

same year debuted its first car, the

Lamborghini 350 GTV, a two-seater coupe

with a V12 engine. Lamborghini's production

facility and headquarters are located in

Santagati Bolognese, Italy. Italian Ferruccio

Lamborghini founded the company in 1963

with the goal of producing a refined grand

touring car to compete with other companies

such as Ferrari. Lamborghini is known across

the world for its cutting-edge design of car

technology, but I found out that making a

Lamborghini is done more by humans than

by futuristic robots like other cars. The

average price for a Lamborghini is $200,000.

SOCCER

By Jordan Reyes

First, did you know that soccer also has

another name to be called? It is ‘’Football’’.

It is said that modern soccer started in

England and was invented by Charles Welford

Brown. Soccer was invented in England in the Mid-

19th century. The game of soccer is one of the most

popular sports in Europe and the Americas. Soccer is

important because it is played by 250 million players

in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the

world’s most popular sport.

Secondly, Association Football, more

commonly known as ‘FUTBOL’ or soccer, is a team

sport between two teams of eleven with a spherical

ball. The word soccer which is believed to have

originated in Britain some 200 years ago, comes from

the official name of the sport called ‘Association

Football.’

King Edward the third banned soccer in

1365 owing to the growing incidents of violence and

military indulgence in the sport. Then, in 1424 King

James the first of Scotland also proclaimed in the

parliament ‘No man shall play FUTBOL.” You can

easily say that this popular game has been played for

more than three thousand years.

Finally, soccer can be played by women too.

Soccer is my favorite sport and it is very fun to play.

Positive and Negative Effects of Dance

By Kelsey Denny

Dance is a very popular way of expressing yourself through movement of the body. Ballet was originated in Italy for a royal quart yard dance. King Louis XIV created the royal school of ballet. Ballet was originated in 1454. Dance is very popular as in cultural dance and performance pieces such as the Great Russian Nutcracker.

There are many positive and negative effects to dancing. One example of a negative affect is hearing loss. The loud music affects hearing at a young age. The positive effects include increases in flexibility and stability. It also increases your stamina and your muscular strength. Dance can also help with weight loss. Exercises like dance can help you sleep and relieve stress. Dance is a good way of expressing the mind and body.

Common injuries include sprains and strains. Also, common injuries include tendons snapping or twisting. 52% of the injuries are caused by dancers falling. Shoes that don’t fit can cause foot and knee injuries as well. One more type of injury is a broken bone. As you can see there are many positive and negative effects of dance.

Apple by Mason Smith

Apple Inc. is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California that designs,

develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, and online services. Apple was first created in April 1, 1776. They

created apple because Steve Jobs had an idea of inventing a type of computer. It was initially called “Macintosh” because of his

favorite apple, later he named it “Apple.” Apple was created by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. Some new apple

products are the Iphone 7, Iphone 8, and Iphone X. A really popular computer is called the MacBook.

Apple's worldwide annual revenue totaled $215 billion for the 2016 fiscal year. The company enjoys a high level of brand

loyalty and has been repeatedly ranked as the world's most valuable brand. However, it receives significant criticism regarding the

labor practices of its contractors and its environmental and business practices, including the origins of source materials. This is one

of the most popular brands right now in electronics, I think apple will continue to grow throughout the years.

Infectious Diseases By: Cody Roggenkamp and Matthew Fieldson

River Blindness (Onchocerciasis) is an eye and skin disease from a worm. It also comes from the Black fly. The infection starts mostly from the Black fly biting you. The disease comes from West Africa and Mexico. The disease is not currently infectious but it is very dangerous in what it can do to a single person. It can make you blind, destroy your skin and makes your eye hurt for a while, but in a while it goes away and makes you blind. It is one of the most common ways to get blindness. One of the cures is leaches.

Ebola is a virus. The virus can spread by very different ways but what the virus can do to your body is bad. Some of the symptoms are diarrhea, dehydration, nausea, vomiting blood, and gives you pain in your body but sometimes it's fatal. The virus started in Guinea then moved across the border to Sierra and Liberia. It was first discovered in 1976 with an outbreak. It spreads by saliva (kissing or shared drinks), by touching a contaminated surface (blankets or doorknobs), by animal or insect bites or stings, and blood products (unclean needles or unscreened blood).

Both of these viruses are very dangerous and infectious so you might want to stay away from these places, but if you want to go to the place go at your own risk. This is our summary of Ebola and River Blindness.

This is the black fly that starts River Blindness. This is Ebola

There are many different teams such as the Giants, New York Yankees, and Dodgers. The Dodgers are the Giant’s biggest rivals.

There are many baseball stadiums like AT&T Park which is mostly where the Giants play. There are many other parks like PNC Park and Coors Field. The Dodger Stadium is the largest stadium ever with a capacity of 56,000.

Basket Ballers

By Nicholas Braun

Hello Basketball fans! Did you know that James Naismith invented basketball? He was a sports coach in 1891. He also created the world's first football helmet. If you don't know what

basketball is, it is a sport played between two teams of five players. You score goals by throwing a ball through a netted hoop.

Also, did you know that basketball was invented in Springfield, Massachusetts? Basketball is most popular in the United States. It was invented in December 1891 for a sport that can be played inside and outside. It is a year round sport that is played by many players who enjoy basketball.

It was invented when James Naismith was assigned a task to create a new indoor sport so he hung two buckets on tall beams on both sides of the court and then he split his class into two teams of 18 and then handed them a ball.

Basketball can be played by boys or girls. This sport is an awesome sport to play at home and at school.

If you are reading this, I hope this inspires you to try out for basketball. But make sure to stay in school.

Forest Fire Causes By: Mackenzie Speers

Did you know that fires can be naturally started? Forest fires can start two ways. One of them is that

they can be naturally caused and the other way is humans can start them. It is so important that the amount of

fires and fire risks go down. After several years on a downswing, on-duty firefighter deaths were up in 2013.

There were 101 on-duty firefighter fatalities last year, including eight classified as Hometown Heroes,

according to statistics compiled by the USFA. During 2012, records show 83 firefighters died while serving

their communities. Almost all of these people who were killed over the years had families. Before you decide

to do something that may cause a fire you should think of all the people that can die trying fixing your

problem.

What is fire? Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in

the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and

various reaction products. Fire is hot because the conversion of the weak

double bond in molecular oxygen to the stronger bonds in the

combustion products. Carbon dioxide and water releases energy 32 g.

The bond energies of the fuel play only a minor role. At a certain point

in the combustion reaction, called the ignition point, flames are

produced. The flame is the visible portion of the fire. Flames consist

primarily of carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen and nitrogen. If hot

enough, the gases may become ionized to produce plasma. Depending on the substances

alight, and any impurities outside, the color of the flame and the fire's intensity will be different. Fire in its

most common form can result in conflagration, which has the potential to cause physical damage through

burning.

Fire is an important process that affects ecological systems around the globe. The positive effects of

fire include stimulating growth and maintaining various ecological systems. The negative effects of fire

include hazard to life and property, atmospheric pollution, and water contamination. If fire removes protective

vegetation, heavy rainfall may lead to an increase in soil erosion by water. Also, when vegetation is burned,

the nitrogen it contains is released into the atmosphere, unlike elements such as potassium and phosphorus

which remain in the ash and are quickly recycled into the soil. This loss of nitrogen caused by a fire produces a

long-term reduction in the fertility of the soil, which only slowly recovers as nitrogen is "fixed" from the

atmosphere by lightning and by leguminous plants such as clover.

Natural fires can be started from lightning, with a very small percent of combustion of dry

fuel such as, sawdust and leaves. If it generates enough heat through the ground it can start a fire that

easy. People don't realize how easily a fire can be started, that's why you need to pay attention to what

you are doing. Now, not all fires are caused by humans but if you keep your dry dead weeds and grass

kept short and clean the fire cannot travel as much. Whether fire is started naturally or by humans,

there is always something you can do to keep it from spreading as quick and as much.

On the other hand, human caused fires can be due to any number of reasons. Some fires that

have started include the reasons of smoking, recreation, equipment, and miscellaneous other

things. Sometimes the fires caused by humans can be as simple as someone mowing their lawn at the

wrong time of the day. There are so many ways fires can be started just from humans on top of the

smoking and not following the directions. Sometimes it is a truthful accident if the barque flips over

by a dog or an electric problem in the power lines or even in a house. Sometimes there is nothing that

you did wrong but it still happens. That is when you try to prevent the other fires that start because of

humans.

Human-caused fires constitute the greater percentage of forest fires in our forests, but natural

fires constitute the great majority of the total area burned. This is because human-caused fires are

usually detected early in their duration, and therefore they are usually contained easily. Natural fires,

on the other hand, can burn for hours before being detected by firefighting authorities allowing the fire

to spread more before they even know the fire exists.

The next solar eclipse will be April 8, 2024. The eclipse passed through Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This was the first total solar eclipse in ninety-nine years. This was a total coast to coast solar eclipse and it amazed millions.

Old Trends By Mason Smith

Old Trends were a really big hit for 2016. 2016 was supposed to be a big hit for music

and trends but a couple of things stood out to a lot of people. Some of the trends were Vine,

Music, Dabbing, Bottle Flipping, and Fidget Spinners.

Vine was a big trend, it allowed people to express themselves and have fun using a form

of social media. Vine was a short-form video hosting service where users could share six-

second-long looping video clips. A lot of Vine stars were Logan Paul, Jake Paul, King Bach,

Thomas Sanders, Lele Pons, and Amanda Cerny. Vine was made in 2013 but really took off in

2015-2016. It was deleted in October of 2016.

Music was a big influence on a lot of kids, even the songs that didn’t make sense, kids

loved. Some of the most popular songs were “Watch Me Whip” by Silento, created in January of

2015. “Ultimate” by Denzel Curry, created in 2015. “Turn Down for What” by DJ Snake,

created in 2013 but was played a lot in 2015-2016.

Dancing was one of the most popular hits, a couple of the dance moves that were

performed a lot were the Whip, Dab, and Nae Nae. These dance moves slowly came out of trend

in October of 2016.

Bottle Flipping was a satisfying thing people did to keep them busy. It was also very fun.

Bottle flipping became a trend when a guy walked out on a talent show and flipped it and landed

it. This video went viral, influencing many kids to try this “fun” trend.

Fidget Spinners were a toy made for people that fidget with things so that they have a

designated toy to fidget with. People started using these just for fun and not necessarily for their

original purpose.

These trends were really popular, hopefully trends in this upcoming year will be way

more fun!

Life Beyond Earth By: Isabelle Limon

Aliens, that word to some of us may come as a shocker or for people who are crazily interested in E.T or Extraterrestrial Life like me it may be a great way to talk about one of your favorites things. During the 1600s, John Winthrop was the first to put on record that he saw two unidentified flying objects or UFOs for short. On March 1, 1639 John Winthrop recorded in his diary the first UFO sighting. He supposedly spotted it in Massachusetts Bay. Recently some people suspect that our solar eclipse we had will soon usher aliens and creatures from out of this world to Earth. There have been nearly 105,000 UFO sightings over the past 100 plus years. Some cool facts about Area 51 (which is actually suspected to be an alien reservation place) are: Area 51 has been chosen a various number of times for things like bomb testing and also chemical experiments for NASA. Also Area 51 is a highly classified remote Air Force Base in the Nevada Training and Testing Range. And one more cool fact is that most of their experiments that they do there are called Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information or (TS/SCI) mainly because (hence the name) their projects are secret and no one really knows what is being done in there.

Vegeta

By Dylan Spain

Vegeta is a character that was introduced in the 6th episode of Dragonball Z. When he was introduced he was arriving at Earth from the message Raditz sent when he died. Raditz sent the message because Raditz came to turn Goku to his side and destroy Earth. Of course Goku said no and the Raditz took his son so Goku teamed up with Piccolo to defeat Raditz and they did. When they did, Raditz sent the message to Vegeta and Vegeta and Nappa were on their way. When Vegeta and Nappa arrived they blew up a city and then fought Goku. Vegeta did lose but he came back to Earth three months later and was a good guy but still as stubborn as a mule. When he came back Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo were on their way to planet Namek (the planet where the race Namekians live at) so they can fight Frieza. They had a little interruption though and had to fight captain Ginyu and his crew. When Vegeta fought Frieza he was killed. When he died Goku turned super saiyan and then Gohan and Dende gathered the dragonballs and wished everyone killed by Frieza back to life so Vegeta came back and then Dende wished all the living things to go on earth so Frieza could fight Goku (Goku and Frieza were not sent to earth). When goku came back, future Trunks came and defeated Frieza again because Frieza was not fully killed and saved by his father when his father turned him to a cyborg.

In the Kai series Vegeta trained with future Trunks and became super saiyan ultra but still got defeated by Cell. Once Cell was defeated then came the seven years of peace. In that time the only thing Vegeta did was train and become stronger. When the seven years of peace ended a new villain occured name Majin Buu with his master Babidi. Babidi tried to take over Vegeta’s body but when he took over Vegeta resisted and Babidi only made him stronger. Vegeta is my favorite character from Dragon Ball Z so that is why I chose him.

Hurricane Harvey/Hurricane Irma By Haley Burke and KayLynn Brigman

Hurricane after hurricane have been hitting the United States. Hurricane’s occur when winds reach 74 mph. Air from surrounding areas with higher air pressure pushes in to the low pressure area. Then that ¨new¨ air becomes warm and moist and rises, too. As the warm air continues to rise, the surrounding air swirls to take its place. As the warmed, moist air rises and cools off, the water in the air forms clouds. The whole system of clouds and wind spins and grows, fed by the ocean’s heat and water evaporating from the surface.

Starting on August 25th with Hurricane Harvey located in Houston, Texas disasters have struck the United States in the form of hurricanes. So far there were around 82 deaths, even animals have been injured and killed. Fifteen trillion gallons of water have flooded into Houston, forty inches of rain in some areas. At least 100,000 homes were damaged in the process and over seventy billion dollars in damage. Many helicopters came to help pets and families. This is the most major hurricane since Wilma in 2005. There are 30,000 displaced and over 17,000 rescues have been done.

HARVEY

And if Harvey wasn't enough there has been another incident in Florida, crossing over Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, Cuba, Turks, Caicos, Bahamas, Virgin Island, Palm Beach County, the Caribbean’s, South Carolina, and Georgia, called Irma. Wind speeds got up to 165 mph. Over 75 deaths so far and over 2 million people without homes or power. This is a category two hurricane. This Atlantic hurricane sucked water inward away from shorelines, leaving bays along the Gulf Coast practically dry.

Michael Jackson was a singer that was born in August 29, 1958 and sadly died in June 25, 2009. In that year I was only three years old and I didn’t know of him then but if I did know of him then he would have been my favorite singer like he is now. Michael Jackson had already been a singer before he started singing by himself. Before he sang solo he was the lead singer in the Jackson 5. When the Jackson 5 was held Michael Jackson sang with his four brothers and his father. The interesting thing is there was actually six Jacksons instead of five.

Michael Jackson left the Jackson 5 when he was 18. He left because one of the members (his father) had gotten heart disease. When Michael’s father had the disease Michael decided to go solo because he would refuse to perform or make new songs without his father. Michael Jackson accumulated enough money for his father.

My favorite songs from Michael Jackson are “Billie Jean” and “Bad.” I was only two years old when he made those famous songs. The final topic is that even though Michael Jackson is dead he is still my favorite singer and plenty of other people's favorite singer.

Prince started his music career when he was 20 years old with his first album, For You, which was released in April of 1978. In his very successful career he had a net worth of around $150 to $300 million. Sadly, Prince died on April 21, 2016 at the young age of 57. He was addicted to opioid painkillers. His friends were trying to stop his addiction. They got him a doctor whom he was supposed to meet. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it in time and he was found dead in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Prince was remembered and cremated. His cremated remains were placed in a custom, 3D printed urn shaped like the Paisley Park estate.

Clowns By Jesse Bosche

What are clowns? Clowns are comic performers who enjoy slapstick or physical types of physical comedy, usually in mime style.

So, where did clowns originate from? Right through ancient history there have always been men (and women!) who have had the ability to make others laugh. But sadly in ancient times, only records of great deeds, battles and momentous decisions were recorded and passed down; the ‘doings’ of everyday folk were lost in time. However, ancient clowns did exist, not known as clowns, of course, the word clown came into use in the 16th Century.

Being afraid of clowns is a natural thing in life. What you call that is coulrophobia. Although only 12 percent admit to suffering from the phobia, 43 percent have coulrophobia in the U.S.

Some of the most famous clowns in history are Bill Irwin, John Wayne Gacy, Emmett Kelly, Red Skelton, Soupy Sales, Grock, and a ton more.

Court jesters (also known as fools) have been so popular that there has been a movie about them released in January 27, 1956. Fools were employed by a noble or royal for entertainment.

You can find clowns at carnivals, rodeos, birthday parties, and even scary movies.
