There’s no doubt that supporting children to be happy and healthy is a team effort that can involve parents, family, health professionals, and the broader community. With our proud history of working with children and families, we’re pleased to offer a wide range of programs and services to meet the needs of the families, the early childhood centres and the schools that we work with.

Welcome to the second edition of the Child and Family Services newsletter.

Ronda JacobsChief Executive Officer

Hello

We’ve recently started a feeding clinic for children aged 6 months to 8 years, to provide assessment and therapy for children having trouble with food fussiness, transitioning from milk to solid food, and disruptive mealtime behaviours.

We know that finding time to take your children to see the dentist can be difficult, which is why we have an experienced dental team who can come to childhood centres and, as of this year, primary schools. Little Smiles is a free, fun, and educational program that provides dental checks and information on caring for teeth and gums.

If you’d like to know more about the Feeding Clinic, Little Smiles, or any of our other services, please get in touch with our team on 9890 2220 or email [email protected].

With the last few months of cold weather, especially in the mornings, it’s been even more challenging to eat well, which is why we’ve included a number of quick, healthy snack ideas in this edition. There’s also a colouring in page and an introduction to Mandy, our trilingual paediatrican.

We hope you enjoy reading our latest issue.

What’s an average day for you?Crazily busy. Nonstop working. Trying to juggle the job of being a paediatrician, a mum and a wife.

What is it that you love most about what you do?I get to work with children and help families through the issues they encounter, seeing them through it by walking the path with them. Why would my child see a paediatrician?Your child might see a paediatrician if you require a specialist opinion about their health and development, or if your child needs specialised care and treatment. Language plays an important role in a child’s development. It enables children to communicate with their families, learn at school,

socialise with friends, build relationships with others and complete simple tasks such as asking a question.

Encouraging language skills

A few ways to encourage language skills in pre-schoolers with books:

Keep it positive and fun

Encourage prediction skills. What might happen next? Encourage them to make guesses.

Balance questions & comments. Questions can be helpful! But it’s important not to ask too many. Support your child’s understanding by asking a range of questions and modelling appropriate answers

e.g. who, where, when, what, why, how.

Talk about pictures. If your child is interested in illustrations, ask them to comment, describe, and explain them.

Talk about the pictures, and encourage imagination.

Show interest. Around this age, children start to tell stories. Listen and ask questions about the stories.

Give instructions. Make a request that contains two or three pieces of information.

For example: “Go into your bedroom and bring me your blue jumper.”

Spend time at your local library.

NDIS childhood servicesFun stuff

I was walking down the road, and I saw a donkey... hee-haw! And he only had three legs. He was a wonky donkey... In this very funny, cumulative song, each page tells us something new about the donkey, until we end up with a spunky, hanky-panky cranky stinky dinky lanky honky-tonky winky wonky donkey, which will have children in fits of laughter! There is much fun to be had by listening to the song and trying to predict the new word for each clue given!

Fun factFun factQuestionQuestion AnswerAnswerWho has more bones… A child? Or a grown up?

A child! Babies have 300 small bones. By the time you’re grown up, you only have 206, but they’re big ones. Some of your bones join up as you get older.
