The ‘Unit of Hope’ project has a very specific target group. That is widows that are HIV positive, those who are caring for persons living with AIDS, and also those caring for their children and the children of extended family members who have succumbed to AIDS. Partnering with Christian Mission Aid (CMA), the Units of Hope project takes place in Nyanza Province in western Kenya, an area where in 1999, the incidence of HIV/AIDS was said to be close to thirty percent. These families are destitute; their homes are dilapidated and most are without any land, livestock or income. These families can neither afford to send any of their children to school nor can they afford health care or provide adequate nutritious food for their children. The aim is to help as many widows as possible and the children they care for. Community leaders identify the most vulnerable and needy widows in the area and select them to receive a Unit of Hope. These homes consist of a solid two room house with a durable cement floor. The roof is constructed with iron sheets and has a rain gutter system. These gutters run into a 1500 litre water tank at the side of the home. The homes also include a ventilated pit latrine and a bathroom. The rain catchment system provides clean, safe water for drinking along with water for bathing, watering live- stock and washing clothes. The rain system along with the pit latrine and bathroom, provide greater sanitation for the home. CCI also includes a Livelihood Package with the Unit of Hope. This consists of a means to generate income and provide for the entire family; either through a home garden, milking goats or poultry keeping. This valuable program also includes: home based care for those suffering from AIDS, medical care for the family, provision for the children’s education and an emergency food contingency. A secure well built home, along with a Livelihood Package truly provides hope for a better future for these widows and their children, one family at a time. news A UNIT OF HOPE FOR KENYA’S WIDOWS & ORPHANS The cost for each ‘UNIT OF HOPE’ Two Room House $ 4,225. In Nairobi, Kenya, approximately 600,000people live in the unplanned settlement of theMathare slum. Nearly 98% live below thepoverty line and are barely surviving on less thana dollar a day. Like other slum dwellers acrossthe country and worldwide, the Mathare residents are forced to contend with highlycompromised living conditions that include extremely poor sanitation and sewage systems, deplorable housing and a near absence of all social amenities. These challenges have a directimpact on the ever increasing child mortality rate, inferior maternal health and a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS infections. Child mortality is on the increase due to meager, inadequate diets. Children not much older than 5 years of age end up on the streets as they areforced to search for food in dumpsters outside their homes. Others resort to prostituting themselves or selling illegal drugs for food, whichends their schooling as the need for food supersedes the need for education. ChildCare INTERNATIONAL has committed to assist the

feeding program at the three schools overseen by Mathare CommunityOutreach. Food is essential as a motivator for school attendance. It is thekey to relief, survival, promotion and adequate involvement of the childrenin all activities which includes attending school.

The smell of alcohol assaults your nose from a distance. The whole placeis a beehive of activity. Welcome to Kyaye, a slum in a Kampala suburb nearthe Makerere Full Gospel Church, a place that never goes to sleep.

Directly across the street from the Kyaye slum is the Makerere Full GospelChurch which from its humble beginning has grown to become one of thelargest churches in the country. For many years they could only watch helplessly as the slum slipped into further decay and the children grew upwith no hope. Today, in partnership with CCI, we have combined our resources to transform the lives of the children in the Kyaye slum.

Through a generous gift from Canada, the Arthur & Elsie SkidmoreLegacy Centre has been built on the Makerere Full Gospel site to providea place for over 300 children to come to hear the Word of God, receive a nutritious meal and participate in an Awana based children’s program.CCI has registered 200children from 14 schools in

the Kyaye slum to assure them an education, basic health care, spiritual transformationand the dream of a better life outside of the slum.
