One third of children and adolescents were overweight in 2012 in the United States (Center for Disease Control (CDC), 2014). Most of the health problems associated with being overweight and obese will follow children and adolescents into adulthood (CDC, 2014). Interferences and Implications Slide 11 Consequences If children are overweight, obesity in adulthood is likely to be more severe. Obese children are more likely to become obese adults. Adult obesity is associated with a number of serious health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Approximately one in every three children are overweight or obese.
