Canadian Road Trip
Celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary by buckling up for a musical voyage across our great land! From Alberta to the Maritimes, from pow-wows to fiddling, students explore our great country through traditional music and a variety of Canadian composers. Connected to Alberta’s Social Studies curriculum, this concert celebrates the vastness of Canada and the diversity of our country’s communities.
GRADES K–3: 50 minutes without intermission Dates: May 1, 2, 3, and 5, 2017, at 10:30am and 1:00 pm (50 minutes in length)

Open Dress Rehearsals
Catch a sneak peek of the ESO at work in our Open Dress Rehearsals! Students gain an inside view of the rehearsal process through a live blog feed broadcast in the hall and through a Q&A with composers, conductors, and other special guests. Students will gain an introduction to the historical context of great contemporary and classical symphonic works. This is the ultimate experience for both orchestral newbies and die-hard musicians!

Ready to reveal your talent? Want to gain that all-important experience of performing in front of a live audience? We’re looking for student soloists and small ensembles to perform 45-minute showcases in the Winspear Centre lobby prior to select ESO performances. Participants receive complimentary tickets to that evening’s concert.
YONA–Sistema
YONA–Sistema (Youth Orchestra of Northern Alberta) is an inclusive, community-focused afterschool program which uses music education as a vehicle for social change in Edmonton’s under-served neighbourhoods. The program is free for participating students thanks to generous funding support from partners and donors. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Conducting Your Business – Leadership Development Workshop
Use the orchestra as a metaphor for great leadership and teamwork! Rob Kapilow of NPR’s “What Makes It Great?” will lead ESO musicians through a well-known orchestral work, teasing it apart to model how leaders and their teams interact for greatest impact and success. Participants will sit on the stage or in the choir loft for an up-close and personal experience. This immersive and entertaining half-day workshop includes a Q&A with musicians, light refreshments, and two tickets to a follow-up ESO concert for each participant. Designed for business professionals at all levels who are looking to overcome linear thinking and jumpstart creativity.

Rusty Musicians: B-Sides
This is your chance to sit “B-Side” a musician from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra as you work through favourite pieces from the classical repertoire. You’ll get a unique “behind the scenes” glimpse of a real orchestra at work while playing music along with the pros! If you’re a non-professional instrumental musician—or you used to play and thought those days were behind you—it’s time to dust off your orchestral instrument and join the ESO on stage at the Winspear Centre for an evening rehearsal, led by Music Director Bill Eddins.

Rusty Musicians: Summer Academy
Spend a week with us in the summer and immerse yourself in music and performance. Summer Academy is designed for adult non-professional musicians. With expert instruction from members of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and other professional musicians, Summer Academy provides a unique opportunity for classes, rehearsals, and sectional instruction – all leading up to a performance on the stage of the Winspear Centre! Join your fellow non-pros for a week of intense and fun orchestral study – and fall in love with making music all over again. Opportunities for private lessons and masterclasses are also provided, as is an optional chamber music track for even more music-making and performance opportunities.

These engaging, informative, and entertaining half-hour presentations are designed to help you get more from your concert experience. Learn about the composers, the music, and the context of that night’s performance without needing to be a music expert.

ESO Adopt-a-Player
Students will explore the joys of creating and performing their own musical work, led by an ESO musician! Your “adopted” musician will visit your school and collaborate with teaching staff to guide students through the process of creating an original piece of music. Students will then perform their composition on-stage at the Winspear Centre in April!
Program runs from January to April 2017. Participation is free of charge and is open to all Gr. 4–6 classes who attend an Education Concert in February. Up to ten classes are selected per year.

PRE-SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN
Wee Ones at the Winspear: Opposites
Bring your group of little ones to the Winspear Centre for hands-on musical fun! Your children will learn all about the concept of “opposites” through music and movement, take a look inside the majestic Davis Concert Organ, and make their Winspear début singing on stage!
Cost: $150 for a 50-minute program. Maximum 18 children per group. Dates are limited; book soon to avoid disappointment.
GRADE 3
Science of Sound
During this full-day program, students have the unique opportunity to tour the Winspear Centre from top to bottom, learning about sound through hands-on inquiry. Students work together to discover how various instruments make sound and create their own original pieces of music. They explore the amazing acoustics of the Winspear Centre, spend time with a professional musician, and may even get to perform on-stage or sit in on an Edmonton Symphony Orchestra rehearsal! Program specifics will be determined based on your needs in consultation with the Program Coordinator.
Cost: $450 for a full-day program. Maximum 30 children per group. Dates are limited; book soon to avoid disappointment.
GRADES 2–6
Winspear Sound School
During this Inquiring Minds site-based classroom experience, students spend a full week at the Winspear Centre, exploring acoustics, music, and the science of sound through hands-on inquiry. You’ll work with our Program Coordinator to plan your week and we’ll provide resources to incorporate your Sound School learning throughout the school year.

Young Composers Project
Aspiring young composers are encouraged to apply for this rare opportunity. One student will:
• receive a $1,000 bursary towards post-secondary studies; • participate in a mentorship with an ESO Composer from January to June, 2017; • compose a new work; and • hear it performed by the ESO in front of a live audience.

Upbeat!
We want all students to experience the joys of hearing the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra live. That’s why we created Upbeat! ― a grant program that helps schools with modest budgets attend the ESO’s Education Concerts and Open Dress Rehearsals. With support from a generous anonymous donor, we will provide select schools with up to 25 complimentary tickets for an Education performance.
