HOOK: I want you to raise your hand and when I call on you, tell me your name. (Call on 4 or 5

children.) Is anyone here named Simon? That’s kind of a different name, isn’t it? Today we are going to hear about a man named “Simon” and how he got his name

changed. HOOK: (Show some figs.) Does anyone know what these are? They are called figs. (You may

choose to let the children taste them if the class is small.) Does anyone know where figs grow? Figs grow on trees, and our Bible story today tells us about someone who was sitting under a fig tree.

LOOK: Jesus saw Nathanael while Nathanael was under the fig tree all by himself. Jesus knew

what Nathanael was thinking and doing. Jesus was not there, but Jesus knew. If your brother or sister is in another class right now, can you see them? Do you know what they are thinking and doing? Do you know anyone who can do that? How could Jesus see Nathanael when He wasn’t with him? Yes, Jesus is God. Jesus knows everything. Jesus even told Nathanael what his heart was like. Do you remember what He said? He told Nathanael that he was not a cheater—he was a truth teller. How could Jesus know that? Jesus knows what’s in every person’s heart, because Jesus is God. Does Jesus see you right now? Does He know what you had for breakfast? Does He know what you were thinking about when you went to sleep last night? Does He know even what your heart is like? Is there anything Jesus doesn’t know about you? Jesus sees you and Jesus sees me just like he saw Nathanael. Let’s pray and thank Jesus that He sees and knows everything. LOOK: Today we heard about Jesus choosing His disciples. How did Jesus call them to follow Him? [If the teacher has followed the story line in the

Scripture passage you can probably draw out at least 3 ways Jesus called them] Yes, Jesus said, "Follow Me", and He also invited them to "come and see" Him where He

was staying. And others followed because someone told them about Jesus. Does Jesus still choose people to follow Him today? Jesus calls the people He chooses sometimes by speaking quietly in their hearts, and

sometimes He calls them through a friend, like in our story today. Or Jesus may call through the words of His book, the Bible. There are many ways Jesus calls those He chooses. Are you listening for Jesus’ call? There are two different ways to answer Jesus’ call—"Yes" or "No". How will you answer Jesus’ call? Pray for the children, that Jesus would call each and every one of them to follow Him

and that they would hear His call and that their answer would always be “yes.”

QUESTIONS AND RESPONSES: Below are questions and responses to help you and your child interact with the Scripture passage, and to solicit a personal response from both of you to the truths of the Bible story. Please allow the Holy Spirit to guide you to further questions and responses.

∗ John the Baptist called Jesus “the Lamb of God.” What were lambs for, in the Old Testament times? (Refer to the story of the Passover and the Passover Lamb.)

∗ Jesus’ disciples followed Him. Do you want to follow Jesus? Discuss what it means to follow Jesus.

∗ Pray that God would lead your child to saving faith.

#72 JESUS CHOOSES HIS DISCIPLES, John 1:35-51 Betty Lukens, page 163 – picture A (2 storyboard: outdoors / town)

Bible Story by Connie Oman KEY THEMES: *Jesus chooses those who follow Him *Jesus is God’s promised Deliverer v.36 the Lamb of God; v.41 the Messiah *God knows everything v. 48 *Jesus is God HOOK: Raise your hand. When I point to you, say your name. (Call on 4-5 children.) Is anyone named Simon? That’s kind of a different name, isn’t it. Today we will hear about a man named “Simon” and how he got his name changed. REVIEW: Last week we heard a Bible story about Satan tempting Jesus. The devil tempted Jesus to make Him feel like He wanted to do something that

His Father God did not want Him to do. Satan did this because the devil fights against GOD and what GOD wants; Satan lies and tries to trick people into doing things that GOD doesn’t want. Satan wants people to sin by disobeying GOD. Jesus didn’t believe Satan lies. Jesus didn’t let Satan trick Him into disobeying GOD. When Satan tried to get Jesus to sin, Jesus told Satan what was written in the Bible. Jesus fought Satan’s lies and tricks with the Bible. Jesus didn’t sin. LESSON: I. JESUS CHOOSES HIS FIRST DISCIPLES. (John 1:35-39) One day, John the Baptist was standing with two of his disciples (disciple means friend). John the Baptist saw JESUS walking by. John the Baptist said to his friends, “Look—there’s the Lamb of GOD.” (v. 36) The two men, John and Andrew, followed JESUS. JESUS turned around and saw the men. JESUS said, “What do you want?” The two men said, “Teacher, where are you staying?” [2] JESUS said to them, “Come and you will see.” (v. 39) So the men came with JESUS and stayed with Him that day. JESUS chose the two men to follow Him and be His friends. JESUS chooses those who follow Him.

II. JESUS CHOOSES SIMON AND CHANGES HIS NAME TO PETER. (John 1:40-42)

One of the friends who followed JESUS was named Andrew. Andrew had a brother named Simon. Andrew went and found his brother, Simon. Andrew said to Simon, “We have found the Messiah”(v. 41) that means the promised Savior. [3] Andrew brought his brother, Simon to meet JESUS. (v. 42) When JESUS saw Simon, He said, “So you are Simon. Now your name is Peter.” JESUS chose Peter to follow Him. JESUS chooses those who follow Him. II. JESUS CHOOSES PHILIP AND NATHANAEL. (John 1:43-50) The next day, JESUS decided to go to a town called Galilee. [1] JESUS found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” (v. 43) JESUS chose Philip to follow Him. JESUS chose Philip to be His friend, that means His disciples. [3] Philip found Nathanael under a fig tree and said to him,

“We have found the One who Moses and the prophets wrote about in the Bible. His name is JESUS.”

Nathanael wasn’t sure that JESUS was really the One the Bible told about. Philip said, “Come and see for yourself.” JESUS saw Nathanael walking toward Him and said to Nathanael,

“You are not a cheater—you are a truth teller.” (v. 47) JESUS knows everything, even what’s in Nathanael’s heart. Nathanael said to JESUS, “How do you know me?” JESUS answered Nathanael, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” (v. 48) Nathanael said to JESUS, “Teacher, You really are the Son of GOD! You are the King of Israel!” Nathanael knew that JESUS sees everything. JESUS knows and sees everything because He is GOD. SUMMARY We heard a story about JESUS choosing His friends, the disciples. JESUS chooses those who follow Him. JESUS chooses His friends. JESUS called them to follow Him:

1) Sometimes, JESUS said, “Follow Me.” 2) Sometimes, JESUS invited them to “Come with Me.” 3) Sometimes, people followed JESUS because someone told them about JESUS.

JESUS uses the Bible to show us who He is. JESUS uses the Bible to call those He chooses to follow Him. The Bible tells us that JESUS knows everything. JESUS knows everything because He is GOD. JESUS knows everything, even what’s in our hearts. JESUS chooses His friends. JESUS chooses those who follow Him.

LESSON: I. Jesus’ first disciples (John 1:35-42) Remember 2 weeks ago we learned about John the Baptist. Remember that John the Baptist told people to Repent (turn away) from their sin. One day, John the Baptist was with two his disciples (one whose name was Andrew) Disciples are people who learn from a teacher and help others to know more about God. Disciples mean friends. John saw Jesus walking nearby and he said to his disciples: “Look the Lamb of God.” JESUS IS GOD’S PROMISED DELIVERER –

Jesus came to save His people from their sins. When the disciples heard him,

they followed Jesus and spent the day following Him. Andrew was so excited about seeing Jesus that he went to find his brother, Simon. He told his brother, “We have found the Messiah” (that is Christ). That’s because he knew that JESUS IS GOD’S PROMISED (DELIVERER) Savior They both went to find Jesus. When Jesus looked at Simon, He said, “You are Simon…You shall be called Peter.”

II. Jesus calls Philip and Nathanael (John 1:43-51) The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee (a city nearby) He found a man named Philip, and said to him, “Follow Me.” Philip was also excited about seeing Jesus that he told his friend Nathanael

that he had found the one Moses wrote about in the Law…Jesus of Nazareth. He knew that JESUS IS GOD’S PROMISED (DELIVERER) Savior. Nathanael didn’t know that Jesus was God’s Promised (Deliverer) Savior

and wanted to meet Jesus, to see if He really was the Promised Savior. When Jesus saw Nathanael, He said to him,

“You are not a cheater—you are a truth teller.” Jesus knew what was in Nathanael’s heart, even before meeting him or knowing him. GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING. Nathanael said to Jesus,” How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” JESUS KNOWS EVERYTHING. Jesus knew what Nathanael was thinking and doing. Jesus wasn’t there but Jesus knew. JESUS KNOWS EVERYTHING, even what we’re thinking right now. Nathanael said to Jesus,”Rabbi, (that means teacher),

You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” Jesus said to Nathanael,” You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree.”
