Gospel Meditation “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” The Pharisees, full of malice, were trying to “entrap Jesus in speech.” They concocted a question that flattered Him, saying, “You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth,” but which also put Him in a position to be in big trouble if He challenged the Roman laws. Jesus, of course, escaped the trap with His brilliant reply. We can appreciate the wisdom of His response, but more importantly, we can appreciate what it means for us. To repay to Caesar, in this case, meant to give appropriate allegiance to the secular authorities. We too are under such authority, and although Uncle Sam is different than Caesar in countless ways, the fact remains that as constituents of this country who enjoy its many benefits, we are also called to extend a certain kind of tribute to our government. Taxes, yes, but more than that too. The loyalty and patriotism that offers our gifts in service to the good of our nation is also a tribute we Christians should make in good faith. Only when a law of our land contradicts the moral principles of God do we have to follow our primary allegiance instead, namely, our allegiance to Christ. Unfortunately, in our day we live under certain national laws that do conflict with the truth about human dignity, and thus a tension exists for us. But the course is clear. We must repay “to God what belongs to God” by defending the truth even when it may be unpopular. This kind of courage is what built the Church in those early centuries of persecution when practicing our faith was against the law. Heaven forbid this should ever happen to us. But if it does, we know what must be done.

RCIA News - You’re Invited! RCIA is in the Inquiry phase of the process. The inquirers have so many outstanding questions. They are a group of enthusiastic, passionate individuals eager to explore and discover what it means to be Catholic. As we progress toward the First Rite at the beginning of

Advent, we will need sponsors. This is the time for greater involvement from the body of the Church. What is the role of a sponsor? A sponsor is a practicing Catholic who is willing to accompany the person on his/her faith journey. Sponsors are not expected to know every aspect of the Church’s teaching, but rather to serve as a guide, an example of daily Catholic living bearing witness to the faith. In the sharing of faith, sponsors will find an increase of their own faith. It is truly a blessing for you! Do you feel called to serve? If you feel a prompting of the spirit, or if you have any questions, please give me a call at 303-776-0737, ext. 140. We will need 17 sponsors! How blessed are we!

Live the Liturgy If the coin belongs to Caesar, then give it to him. Paying taxes is often unpleasant, but requires little self-investment. We know that a portion of our income must go back to the government, but what then, exactly, belongs to God? God does not seek our financial resources. What belongs to God is something that we sometimes want to keep to ourselves or divide in different places. What belongs to God is our hearts. We owe everything to God, even our very being. Without God we are nothing. God patiently continues to tell the world: “I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me.” How do we unite the varied allegiances of our hearts into one under God?

Youth Service Ministry Our Youth Service Ministry just finished a month of dedication to prayer for all those impacted by storms Harvey and Irma. They offered their precious resource of time and set it aside for those in need. They completed many rosaries, novenas, offered their Masses, and spent time in Adoration. They created cards containing “spiritual bouquets” which we will send to the Dioceses of Houston and Miami.

Children of Mary Sodality Our wonderful new group had a beautiful beginning! To kick off the official beginning of Children of Mary Sodality, Fr. Humberto and Fr. Daniel offered a consecration ceremony of our group to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the 100th anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun. After the consecration and a recitation of the rosary, mother’s pinned their daughters with their Children of Mary Sodality membership pin. What a special memory made this past Friday at St. John’s! A huge thank you to Fr. Humberto, Fr. Daniel, and Maggie Howard for starting this group off in such a special way.

This special group meets every 1st Saturday of the month to attended Mass at 8:30 a.m. then assembles in Benedict Hall directly afterwards for our monthly meeting. All girls, ages 7-18 years old, are welcome.

St. John’s Food Bank News By John Williams

By the time you read this we will have already finished the Fall Parish Food Drive. Hopefully, this will put food back on our

shelves to serve our current count of 204 families that we serve each week. I recently placed my order with Community Food Share and was able to order almost 4 tons of food for next week. In contrast, this week we received a little less than 2 tons so things are looking up. On November 18th St. John’s will participate in the 9Cares, Colorado Shares Food Drive at these 3 King Soopers locations:

· 2255 North Main Street in Longmont · 6550 Lookout Rd in Gunbarrel · 1650 30th Street in Boulder

We have a need for some of our youth to hand out bags to shoppers. Flyers will be attached to the bags indicating the items needed at this time. Distributing bags is a great for opportunity for boys and girls who might need service hours for school We also welcome Scout groups. To volunteer for a one or a two hour shift, contact Dennis at 720-442-1332. A polite demeanor and a smile are the only requirements. Shifts run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at any of the 3 locations. Thank you for your consideration.

M.U.M.S. Calling all Moms! M.U.M.S is a program for mothers of all ages. It is a place to meet new friends, be inspired, share ideas, and get encouragement from other moms. We meet twice a month at St.

John’s. Our next meeting is on November 2nd from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in Benedict Hall. Special guest, Senite Sahlezghi from Marisol Health, will speak about the mission of this women’s health center. We will have coffee and snacks, and great conversation so please come join us! As always, new members are welcome any time and babysitting is available.
