August 11, 2019 19th Sunday In Ordinary Time
From Our Pastor
One of the most important and powerful passages of scripture is the 25th chapter of Saint Matthew’s gospel. In
that chapter, Jesus speaks to his disciples about the end of time. He tells them the parable of the final judgement.
This is the famous story of the Sheep and the Goats. The sheep are those faithful disciples who are welcomed
into God’s eternal Kingdom; the goats are those who are sent off to eternal punishment. I have often said that
this may be the most terrifying passage in all of Scripture. What makes it so frightening is the reason why the
goats are damned. It isn’t because of what they did. We aren’t given a long list of the things that they did wrong.
What gets them sent off are the things that they didn’t do.
If we want to truly understand what Jesus is trying to teach us in this parable, we need to understand who he is
addressing. Jesus is speaking to his Disciples. He is speaking to the people who have heard his message and
have made the decision to become his followers. With that decision come certain responsibilities. A Disciple,
Jesus tells us, is someone who does much more than just avoiding doing evil. A Disciple has the responsibility to
actively do good. The parable tells us that Disciples are those who: clothe the naked, feed the hungry, give drink
to the thirsty, visit the sick and imprisoned, and welcome the stranger.
If you are reading this article today, the odds are that you are a Disciple. That means that, at some level, you
have made the decision to be a follower of Christ. That means that you have taken on certain responsibilities. As
Disciples we are all called to do two very important things. First, we must avoid doing wrong. Second, and as
important, is this. We must actively do good. Like the good Samaritan from the gospel several weeks ago, when
we see those in need we cannot just walk by. Disciples, like that Good Samaritan, stop and help the person who
is in need. Disciples are like the prophets who see things that are wrong and speak out against them. My prayer
is that God will send us His grace so that each one of us can live up to the responsibilities that we have as a
Disciple.
God Bless,
Fr. Jack Graham

Question: My Irish grandmother always used to take us to the beach on August 15 after Mass because “there was a blessing on the
water.” Isn’t that a superstition?
Not at all! Jumping into the sea on August 15 is perhaps the Irish equivalent of the Greek custom of jumping in on Epiphany. On the So-
lemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we recall the dignity of our baptism. It would be hard to imagine a pleasant devo-
tion than a grateful leap into the waves or off the diving board into refreshing waters. The Assumption is a glimmer of Easter in the summer
sun. It is an assurance in faith that we are redeemed in our bodies, and that where Mary has gone by faith in Christ’s resurrection, we are
headed there too. The dogma proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950 is not a recent invention, but describes our ancient faith that at the end
of her life, Mary, untouched by death, experienced the fullness of resurrected life. That’s where we’re headed too. Our destiny opened up to
us in that first plunge into baptismal waters. Okay, maybe it was just a few drops on your forehead. But your grandmother found a way to
make you recall that gift of God with a joyful plunge. The Assumption is a feast of heaven, our home. There is some clear theology around
your asking your boss for a day off to go to the beach for “religious reasons.” Just remember to celebrate Eucharist first!

gathering together, in prayer and talking about their week. The setting is informal and relaxed. Following prayer, there
is plenty of time to socialize, make new friends and of course EAT PIZZA.
