Katie was eight-years-old when her father began sexually abusing her. He started by “teaching her” about her private parts to desensitize her to the subject of sex. As the years went by, he exposed her to pornography, recorded and photographed the abuse, and even bought provocative clothing that he forced her to wear while he abused her. He threatened her repeatedly saying that if she ever told he would kill her. Katie finally got the courage to tell her teacher about her abuse after enduring the unspeakable for more than five years, and by that time, he had sexually violated her body in every way possible. Katie’s teacher had been trained on how to react responsibly and report the abuse to the proper authorities.

After receiving the report, a Child Protective Services (CPS) worker immediately brought her to the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hamilton County (CACHC) for a forensic interview. Because the family had moved repeatedly, Katie’s abuse had happened in several different places and there were multiple police jurisdictions involved.

Law enforcement from both the city and county were able to observe the interview in an adjacent room along with the CPS worker, and the investigators later assisted another police jurisdiction in their case against Katie’s father.

Child Abuse Statistics• It is estimated that 1 out of every 10 children will be sexually

abused by the age of 18.

• In 90% of abuse cases, children are abused by someone they know... not strangers.

• Only 1 out of every 5 child abuse cases are ever reported.

• Abused children who do not receive help experience higher rates of substance abuse, dysfunctional relationships, teen pregnancies, and prostitution.

Katie also received immediate emergency medical services at the CACHC provided in partnership with Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. With so many professionals working together at one time in one place, the police agencies were able to leave the CACHC and gather additional physical evidence of the abuse to immediately arrest the perpetrator.

The CACHC gave Katie HELP with a comfortable place for her to tell her traumatic story of abuse, rather than a police officer questioning her at home or school. Because she was in a place where she felt safe, she talked for two hours about what happened to her.

2013 annual reportThe CACHC relies on community support to fulfill our mission. Each year, many individuals and

businesses help us provide services to abused children. More than 100 volunteers provided over 1,400 hours of service during the 2013-2014 fiscal year. Others provided monetary help through corporate sponsorships, annual fund donations, or attending our special events. On behalf of the children and staff, thank you for supporting the work we do each day.

524 CHILDREN RECEIVED FORENSIC INTERVIEWSKatie’s Story (cont.)

The CACHC has given Katie’s mother HOPE from a family advocate who provides a listening ear and community resources during her family’s darkest hour. Katie continues to come to the CACHC for counseling and to emotionally prepare for pending court proceedings. The CACHC gives Katie the HEALING she needs in a place where she feels safe.

This is just one of the 583 children we served in 2013-14 whose voices may not have been heard if our agency did not exist. Through our doors lives are changed.
