A Bit of a Rant: Lost or

Stolen?

from Janet Davies, Chair of the Village Hall Committee.

‘Remember in the last newsletter, I had a bit of a rant about the Village Hall laminator going ‘walkies’ - well sometimes a good rant works because it has ‘walked’ back into the cupboard from where it went missing. Now that’s magic! Thank you to whoever returned it (are you going to tell us?)

To: Visitors and Parishioners of Compton Dundon. Recently I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to walk with a dog up what I know as Lollover Lane, which is approached from the official footpath opposite Lollover Thatch. I am saddened to see that the path is becoming increasingly fouled with dog mess. I can only assume that the owners of the dogs which foul the path are under the impression that because it is a country lane in open countryside, there is no need to bag and bin the dog mess. How wrong they are. The surroundings are so beautiful, do people realise how lucky they are to be able to walk this path, why should it be necessary to walk with one’s eyes on the ground in order not to step in piles of dog mess. And I do not exaggerate - I mean piles. One expects to avoid sheep manure on the hill but not dog mess in the lane. Please, please dog owners, bag and take home your pets' mess in order that we can continue to enjoy the idyllic walks up and around Lollover Hill. Wendy Edwards.

Following on from the July meeting, four teams from Compton Dundon attended the Quiz Night held at Somerton Sports Club superbly organised by Somerton W I who also provided very appetising refreshments. The team consisting of Chris and Diane Mitchell, Jerry and Angie Castle were victorious with Bill and Kathy Ingham, John and Corinne Webb a close second. ‘Also-rans’ included Wendy Edwards, Sue Searle, Gill Clothier and Louise Treloggen and Angela Warren very sportingly joined three ladies from Somerton W I. Skittles: We were beaten by 3 pins when playing Ashcott at the Street Inn, the refreshments made up for our disappointment. Next match against Walton, to be played at the Street Inn August 28. The Luncheon club in July visited King Alfred at Burrowbridge; no get together in August but hopefully meeting again in September at the Rose and Portcullis at Butleigh. The August meeting took the form of a Fish and Chip Supper at the Meadway Hall, this event was open to all and it was good to be joined by husbands and friends. Thank you to Tony of Somerton for providing so many suppers at such a high standard and Tony also gave us a very generous raffle prize. Thank you also to the ladies of the committee for making sure everyone was served quickly and the clearing up achieved efficiently. Thank you to Bill and Kathy Ingham for organising the Beetle Drive following the supper. There were various interpretations of the rules, but Kathy did well to keep us all on the straight and narrow. The eventual winner was Christina Napper. Next meeting: September 9 when the speaker Anne Hassed will demonstrate August Arrangements. Please bring items for the Bring and Buy and for the cake stall. The September Competition will be “A Harvest Arrangement”

I would like to thank…….

Roger, for his tribute in the June issue of the Village Newsletter, following my retirement as church warden. Many people since have asked: “Why did you retire from St Andrew’s?” The reality is that I did not retire, I withdrew from the election. This followed misunderstandings and tensions within the church and myself. On the day of the election I realised that, if I had been elected, it would be difficult for me to carry out my duties effectively, so I withdrew. I have lived in this village all my life and will always be grateful I was given the opportunity to serve our church and its parishioners for such a long and happy time. With kind wishes to you all.

The sun shone and it was a

perfect English summer

day for the annual Hog

Roast

Next came the Annual Village

Show with over 500 entries, in a

diverse range of categories. That

evening the Dundon Cider Co-

operative ensured space for this

year’s production by putting on a

cider and music evening. A good

variety of cider was ‘sampled’,

the BBQs worked overtime and all

joined in with the singing.

THE VILLAGE HOG ROAST The Hog Roast was a great success and raised more than £2000! Thank you to everyone who helped, gave of their time, joined in and supported the event so generously; and particular thanks to John and Julie Gordon who did so much of the organising. It really was a lovely village occasion.

Our thoughts and prayers are very much with the family and friends of Hilary Hill who passed away at the end of June. Hilary was the sister of

Stella Searle who passed away only a few weeks earlier.

The Parish Council The Parish Council meets on the first Wednesday of each month starting at 7.00pm at the Meadway Hall.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN

The idea of being still and not doing anything seems appealing, but when it happens we find ourselves wiggling about. We become ill at ease. It actually makes us feel that something is wrong. So consider this outrageous idea. I am suggesting that we form a ‘Julian Group’. These groups, named after Julian of Norwich, happen all around the country among small numbers of people who meet for about half an hour in one another’s homes. The purpose sounds daft. It is to clear the mind, sit in silence and listen to God. Nothing more. No words for you to say or contribute. No awkward moments waiting for flashes and bangs from the Lord. No, it is a shared time that allows God to be within our busy lives. Does it work? Yes. It seems strange at first, but with a little practice, we find that the silence is lovely and infectious because we meet together with a shared aim. And believe it or not, all kinds of good comes. You do not have to belong to the Church, or to a particular creed. We find we have a remarkable universal need to feed on silence together and to draw strength together. And the God whom we value breaks into our space to assure us he is. And that is surprisingly comforting.

If you would like to give it a try, then please come on Thursday 19 September at 7pm to the Church. I will explain more then, answer questions and if there are sufficient numbers, then we can plan a venue or venues and times that are convenient. Don’t be afraid. Because it begins in church it does not imply you are this or that in your believing. It is simply to use the facility this once. After that we may choose homes, with a little bit of luck. Give it a try.

Alpha Courses are open to anyone, churchgoer or not, and aim to answer many of the questions you may have about the meaning of life and the Christian faith in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Street and Walton will be running an Alpha Course in the Mission Church, Street, starting on Tuesday 17 September from 7-9pm and if you would like to know more or take part, please contact Sharon Walker (442297). Booking forms are also available in St Andrew’s Church. More general information about Alpha can be found on www.alpha.org

The Redecoration of St Andrew’s Church The scaffolding has now come down after several weeks and St Andrew’s is gleaming. Even if you are not a regular church-goer, do go and have a look at your lovely, sparkling clean and newly-decorated village church. Much work by many people has gone into this, not least by Patricia Heap who has taken home all the kneelers and cushions and cleaned, repaired and restored them. We thank her and all the others who have contributed to the redecoration. Patricia is also making an inventory of all the kneelers, listing those who donated them, in whose memory they were donated and those who have worked them. She would be grateful if anyone who worked a kneeler with a gold Iona cross for the Millennium would contact her on 442065 as there are four, one of which has no details on the back.
