Australian LP: THE OFFICIAL ADVENTURES OF FLASH GORDON Summit/ Flair FL 2018 Spec: (Nos. A & B) 12” 33rpm (Sd 2)

Notes: Based on the Flash Gordon adventure published in the King comic book Flash Gordon No. 1 entitled “Flash Gordon and the Mole Machine” with script and artwork by Al Williamson, which was issued the same year as this LP. The back cover of the LP uses one of the drawings from the comic book. Flash, Dale and Dr. Zarkov use the mole machine to tunnel through the earth, finding an underground city. The summary on the LP back cover reads – “Dr. Zarkov and Flash Gordon journey to the center of the Earth aboard the Mole Machine and discover an amazing world, Krenkelium. But can they escape the clutches of King Krenko? How does his beautiful daughter, Princess Daria repay Flash for saving her life?” The comic art here shows the mole machine floating in the subterranean world of Krenkelium where giant stalagmites and pillars adorn the huge space and a river of lava runs past the city. For scans of 13 pages of this comic book see Warriors Comic Book Den.

THE LOST WORLD SW – Science Fiction – Children’s

Scr: Ronald LISS (Based on book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) Perf: Basil RATHBONE (Professor Challenger) Ian MARTIN (Doctor Summerlee) Peter FERNANDEZ (Ned Malone) Dir: Ronald Liss Prod: Herb Galewitz Prod. Co: MGM Records; Hollywood, CA Son Effects: Cinema/Sound Ltd. Time: Approx. 38:00 LP: DINOSAURS

    Leo the Lion CH-1016 12" 33rpm (Side 2)

Notes: Sounds like a radio broadcast of the tale that follows the original in spirit but takes several liberties. The dialogue can get quite ridiculous in places. There are silence pauses between scenes that should have been filled with music. Sounds effects are

used but some are quite artificial: gunshots can either sound like explosions or shaken sheet metal. The LP picture cover using toy rubber dinosaur models amidst vegetation with a fake volcano in the distance is a pretty feeble attempt. Basil Rathbone (photo) was best known for his roles as Sherlock Holmes, another Conan Doyle hero. The expedition party of three, Challenger, Summerlee, and Malone, crosses to the isolated plateau on a fallen tree that later tumbles and cuts them off. Side 2 begins with Challenger stating that when he was up a tree he saw a group of caves across the river – “If the cave is deep enough and there are any passages that slope downward, it may mean a way down from the top.” Summerlee replies – “It’s certainly worth exploring.” They spot pteranodons with 25-foot wingspans – “They look like huge bats except for those big heads and those long beaks” – and manage to capture a baby pteranodon. After

crossing the river on a raft, Challenger remarks – “I was right about those caves. I discovered one passage that does seem to have a definite downward slope.” Later inside the cave he says – “Watch your step, it’s dark here. I want to save what’s left of our flashlights for later on.” Malone adds – “My eyes must be getting accustomed to the dark and these walls seem to be giving off some light.” Summerlee – “Yes, it’s a strange luminescent quality, possibly sulfuric limestone.” When they find bones, Challenger says – “This passage must be the den of one of those creatures. See the size of the teeth marks on this bone!” They find a triceratops sleeping in the cave. Then a stegosaurus arrives and both dinosaurs do battle (a scene that was not in the original tale). The spiked tail of the stegosaurus strikes the cave ceiling. “The roof of the cave! The walls are crumbling! Duck your heads.” The sound of crashing rocks, coughing of the three, and then the crow-like cawing of the baby pteranodon. Malone – “The falling rocks must have opened up another passageway.” They hear water. Challenger – “Yes, of course, it’s the underground connection to the river down below…” They proceed and he says – “Look, that’s it, you see the direction the river is flowing and, if I’m not mistaken, there’s light at the other end, and, if that’s daylight, there’s our way out at last.” The 1925 silent movie poster shows Professor Challenger pointing to the Lost World area around Angel Falls in Venezuela. There are large caves in quartzite in this area. One abridged adult version on LP and two unabridged adult versions on CDs of this tale will be found under Adult Fiction – Adventure. Notes: A 24-page see, read, and hear adaptation. On the desert plains of the planet Etema, He-Man rides Battle Cat, a half lion half armored beast, to Grayskull Castle. He stops to water his beast at a well and hears strange sounds emerging from below. So he descends on the well rope and finds a rushing stream in a huge formation chamber. The Mer-Man monster attacks him but He-Man overcomes it. Farther back in the cave he finds the warrior-maiden Teela battling his arch enemy Skeletor. Swords clash. Others, Beast Man and Trap Jaw, join the fray and the battle rages until Man-at-Arms arrives to save Teela and the winged warrior Stratos lifts her out of harm’s way. He-Man returns to the fight with Skeletor, but the later vanishes.

He-Man at well bottom He-Man finds Teela battling Skeletor Stratos saves Teela To insure that no one can enter Grayskull Castle from the cave, He-Man strikes the formations with his sword, the earth trembles, and the cave walls start to collapse. He-Man, Teela, Man-at-Arms, and Stratos flee to the well pit and the underground passage to the castle is sealed forever. • classic, entitled in English, Off on a Comet. A passing comet tears off from planet Earth parts of the western Mediterranean area including a section of Algeria, Gibraltar, and the Isle of Formentera, carrying along several people. As the comet pursues its orbit and distances itself from the sun it becomes necessary for the colonists to take shelter from the intense cold in a huge volcanic cave heated by lava. As the comet reaches the apex of its orbit the volcano’s heat disappears and the colonists are forced to explore deeper into the cave system where they find heat again and are able to move their living quarters. The illustration used for the cover shows Hector Servadac and the astronomer Palmyrin Rosette (with spyglass) looking from the comet Gallia towards the approaching Earth that has a big chunk missing which the comet captured.
