I’d like to thank our dedicated school staff on the writing of these reports. These reports are sent home twice each year to report on the learning progress of each student. This week we are having Parent Teacher Interviews when parents and teachers can discuss the progress and learning outcomes and needs of each student. This year we have trialled an online booking form and thank families for using this means to select a time to meet with their child’s teacher. Parent/carers of students in support unit classes have met at alternate times to discuss their child’s progress. If you missed the chance to attend an interview please arrange a time through the school office to meet with your child’s class teacher next term. Students Return Tuesday 18 July 2017 Students return for Term 3 on Tuesday 18 July 2017. Staff return on Monday 17 July for professional learning. This day is “pupil free”. We wish all our students and families a safe and relaxing holiday break. We’re turning 50! This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Busby West Public School serving the local community in providing quality education. We will be holding a celebration day during Education Week on Wednesday 2 August 2017. This will include a celebration assembly, displays of photos covering the last five decades, student art exhibition and open classrooms. We look forward to present and former students, staff and families joining us on the day. Please RSVP by email to [email protected] or let the school office know. This will assist us in our catering and organisation on the day. Children’s Parliament Children’s Parliament is a platform where students can express their ideas about ‘what matters’ to them in the 2168 postcode area. As part of the Children’s Parliament Program, 3 students from Busby West Public School and Mrs Walker attended the first Parliament sitting last week. These students were Ashlyn, Sandra and Michelle from Stage 3. The sitting was also attended by the Children’s Parliament Ambassadors: Director Public Schools NSW Liverpool, Nick Magriplis; National Children’s Commissioner, Ms Megan Mitchell; NSW Advocate for Children and Young People, Mr Andrew Johnson; Director of Community and Culture (Liverpool City Council), Dr Eddie Jackson; and Member of Youth Council, Miss Lilly Lyons. Sandra hosted the Parliament Sitting along with a student from Busby Public School. Ashlyn presented a speech about the issues in the local area and Michelle supported her peers by answering questions asked by the ambassadors. In preparation for the day, the Children’s Parliament representatives surveyed Year 5 and Year 6 students and asked ‘what matters’ to them in their local area. Students’ responses were gathered and analysed. The main issue identified was concerning local playgrounds. Students felt unsafe while at the playground due to the amount of rubbish, broken glass and cigarette butts as well as the rust and sharp metal on play equipment. We believe that in order to resolve this issue, the local community members should make better use of the rubbish bins provided by Liverpool Council and place their rubbish where it belongs – in the bin! Also, adults need to remember that it is illegal to smoke within 10 metres of a children’s playground and we ask them to abide by that law. We hope that as members of the local community, adults and children can work together to make our playgrounds a safe and enjoyable place for all. Written by Ashlyn, Michelle & Sandra 1

NRL Cops and Kid LeagueOn Thursday 22 of June we had the chance to represent BusbyWest Public School at the NRL Cops and Kids League Tag2017. We had a chance to verse four schools.

The first school we versed was Hinchinbrook Public Schooland the score was 7-4. The second school was Sadleir PublicSchool and the score was 2-2. Lastly, we versed MarsdenRoad Public School and the score was 6-3. We happily wonall of our games. After that, most of us voted for Malakai torepresent BWPS by going against the cops. We voted forMalakai because we believed that he has great sportsmanshipand he did well in all of our games. Later on they announcedwho made it to the semi-finals and we were one of the schools. We were definitely excited and grateful for this opportunity. We versed St Catherine of Siena but unfortunately we lost. However, we did make history for our school by being the

first BWPS team to make it to the semi-finals. It was a verycompetitive day! Some of us had minor injuries but we got backup and kept trying our best.

Our try scorers of the day were Savannah, Malakai, Nameeshaand Oliver. Also, our tagger of the day was Leuta, Sandra andLalita. This experience was amazing for us and we are verylucky to be part of this event.
