The topics they share are: Benefits of Breastfeeding, Nutrition, Latching, Positioning and Breast massage. They emphasize that exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. Because babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months, without any formula, have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses and bouts of diarrhea etc. Part of the advocacy is showing the breastfeeding latch: proper positioning as a good latch is vital to successful breast -feeding. Some mothers are encountering problem, saying “no milk is coming out”. By teaching them how to do breast massage, that will help to increase their milk pro-duction. Massaging the breast will clear the milk ducts and cause the milk to flow more freely, which will help empty the breasts and therefore trigger a higher milk production. Mothers are also taught how to extract milk without using breast pump, likewise some of the different wrong myths are corrected like milk dries out, milk got spolied inside the breast etc.

“Breast Milk is the Best Food for a Baby” By: Jo Anne Hipolito

August, is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month in the Philippines and that’s why the staff of our clinics and the Community Nutrition team have attended seminar focused on breastfeeding and after that even more emphasized on advocating about breastfeeding among pregnant and post-partum mothers. The team is providing information, education and demonstration for the mothers on how to care for them-selves and their baby.

It is a great privilege for us to share this knowledge and we want to encourage every mother to breastfeed their baby. We do believe that after doing such advocacy on breastfeeding all mothers who are able to hear, should know and remember that “Breast Milk is the best food for a baby”.

September is a busy month in many different ways. As example we are planning for 2018 by doing the budget and the strategical plans, we have been conducting two Kid camps and we will conduct Family days (as it is the Family month) etc. Our goal is that all the things we are doing should be for the benifit of the poorest children and their families. Community Nutrition Program helped a whole family By: Maricel Baltes

Zion and Zairell are twins and they were 8 months old when the Commu-nity Nutrition Worker (CNW) found them during the time of mass weigh-ing in their community. At that time, they were weighing 5,6 and 5,5 kg while the ideal weight for their age is between 6.9-10.8 kg. These children were abandoned by the father and were left to their 20-year-old mother. The mother has not been able to finish her high school level of studying and had no source of income. This caused the small family to live together with grandparents whom are scavenger. When the CNW saw the children, she included Zion and Zairell in the feeding program as they were both malnour-ish. At the first appearance the chil-dren looked clean and quite healthy but after taking their body weight she found out that the children had a very low normal nutritional status.

The children received different inter-ventions like provision of probiotics, were referred to Maternal and Child Health Care clinic for a doctors’ check-up and they were included in a 120-day feeding program. During the feeding program their mother was one of the most participative and cooperative mother among the group despite of her young age. She verbalized that she is really doing the best for her children for her to give them a good life status despite of being a single mother. Because of her determination to give a better life to her children, she also took the opportunity to enroll in a Skills Training course in Massage Therapy when the CNW announced that the mission is conducting trainings on different vocational courses. The grandparents of the twins were the ones taking care of the children while the mother is on her schooling. According to the mother, she is not

only taking the course for herself but also for Zion and Zairell whom have once in their lives experienced the hun-ger and malnutrition. Now she has found a way for her to provide and sus-tain a better life for her children. As of today the twin are still receiving services from the mission especially on medical as they are being checked and monitored both by the CNW and the MCHC nurses.

Free Medical and Dental Annual Checkup for students in Shining Light School

The beginning of the school year is an appropriate time for Medical and Den-tal Annual Checkup to ensure that our students start out the school year on the right foot. A free medical/dental check-up was held at SLC-CMP School last August 18, by the Department of Health. A team of dentist, medical doctor and a nurse from the City Health Unit of Anti-polo carried out the comprehensive medical checkup and a general check-up of the oral health condition for all our students in Preschool up to Gr 6.

By: Arlene Reymundo

Children with health issues were refer-eed for a complete elaborate treat-ment. The medical team also highlighted the eating patterns and food choices which may cause tooth decay, plaque etc. The team of doctors and dentists are willing to come back and do a medical and dental mission for our students who are sick so that they can provide medicines, vitamins and dental treat-ment. We looking forward to continually col-

laborate and cooperate with the Local Department of Health to enable us to accomplish our health goal for the benefit of our students.

“A penny saved is a penny earned” By: Ines Asilo

Eunice Rose Nacar is 7 years old and one of our member in ULE Child Savings. She is in Grade I and a pupil at CMP Elementary School. She is the 3rd child of Geneline, who is a member of the ULE program in Antipolo. Both her parents have influ-enced and encouraged her to save since she was young. She wanted to buy an alarm clock for them to use every morning to wake them up and be ready going to school. The child wants to help her parents to meet their dreams like to build their house in the province, to buy boat for fishing and other things for their future. She also wants to buy some things for the school and use money to visit their relatives in Visayas.

Training on Business planning and Entrepreneurship By: Theresa Pacatang

As a new member of the ULE team, my main duties are to conduct train-ings on business planning and entre-preneurship for the ULE members and to encourage the members to create Self Help Groups or to join in different cooperatives. I’m here sharing my experiences during my first months of work together with CMP. The first day of my meet up with the members of ULE was a day that opened my eyes in an advocacy to educate them and be an instrument of their growth. My first tour in Payatas opened my eyes, to an un-ending battle against poverty and hunger. Traversing the road taking the Bicol St. passing through the up and down route going to Molfrid

made me think and showed me how blessed I am. My visit to Shining Light showed a rural face of life. The community reminds me of a peaceful environ-ment far from the very noisy city life. The distance between each members house speaks of how big the area is thus making a suggestion of different approach from Payatas. Then came to the San Isidro com-munity. It is a relocation site of so many informal settlers from the city and the nearby towns, trying to taste a new life in a rural environ-ment far from the many easy to grab innuendos of city life. These three communities showed different life situations for our members to whom I have the chance of sharing my profession. My meet up with these people gives different insights and make it clear-er to me of their needs that I have to answer. The needs assessment showed me a peak of what is in-store for me and what I have to deal with. To my greatest joy, the differ-ent members attending the semi-

nars are very attentive and very ea-ger to learn new things. They may be poor but they are rich with different experiences which molded them to be a better member of the community. The Entrepreneurial Concept start-ed well and I noticed of their hunger for good education. According to the women in Shining Light the Busi-ness Planning Seminars, I conducted helped, them to understand the need of being structured, making plans and calculate, costs, losses and profits etc. The Facilitators keep on telling me that these lec-tures helped them to understand more about entrepreneurship in a better way. I am very inspired to share them knowledge.

Volunteering is a Work of Heart

In our ULE-program, we need facilita-tors that can help, serve and working hand in hand with the Community De-velopment Workers. They are doing this on a volunteer basis and we are so thankful to them. One of the most challenging role of the facilitator in the community is con-ducting home visitations wherein there is a need of education, to follow-up ULE

Imelda Jocson is a member of ULE since 2009 and is now also a facilitator

Arlene Jimenez is a member of ULE since 2010 and is now a facilitator.

members, collects savings and handle loan payments. They also help in filing, recording and other task in the office. For some of the facilitators it has been a really challenging role because from plain housewife and stay at home mothers now they are hardworking mothers in the community.

They have learned to communicate with people in the community, handled different situations and experienced difficulties in dealing with different attitudes when meeting people helping them to learn different experiences in life. They are any how inspired by lis-tening to others experiences during their talks and sharing. They are very thankful for the opportunity to work in the community and to be a part of the mission through ULE. It helps to devel-op their personality and challenge their patience in dealing with people.

She has a dream Gina Castaneda was one of our best hairdressing awardees during our Mobile Skills Training in ULE Antipolo

last June. Gina learned a lot in hair-cutting that she applied now in her personal life. She knows a different kind and styles of hair cutting and she has customer almost every day from the nearby school wherein some of her customer are students and teachers of the said school. In fact, she already served more than 30 students since she started in haircutting. She also ac-cepts home service for hair blower, hair rebounding, hair coloring, hair strengthening. For the moment she does not accept payment because she wants to train and become expert in haircutting. She wants to help others in a simple way. She enjoys what she is doing and she is proud of herself. Every day is a chal-lenge for her to develop her skills and

talent. She believes that someday her dreams will come true and that is to have her own beauty parlor. Her hus-band is her number one fan and he is willing to support her whatever she wants to achieve and he is proud of what she has learned from the ULE pro-ject and the Mobile Skills Training.
