COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD
The children spoke eloquently about their holiday experiences and were keen to hear how other families had celebrated Christmas or New Year. In fact, the class had so many interesting experiences, we decided to write about them in the form of a diary. In our topic, ‘force of an empire’, we are learning about the Romans and the impact they had on the Celts in Britain. We have been finding out what the Romans wore, what they ate and what they enjoyed doing in their spare time. We have coloured maps to show the spread of the Roman Empire across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East and we are really looking forward to our Roman workshop on Friday.
In maths we have used our knowledge of 2 and 4 times tables to help us with our 8 times table.

Brass class have had a great start back to school this term. We launched our new topic, ‘plague, pus & pestilence’ with a visit from Mr History. He told us about different plagues in history, how filthy and dirty Stuart
London was (no wonder they all got the plague!) and taught us about plague remedies. We won't go into too much detail but one involved cutting a pigeon in half....!
We also got to dress up in Stuart clothes, have sword fights and to put out the Great Fire of London in the playground using a 17th Century water pump! Wow- we can't wait for the rest of our topic!

Returning to education
The children have come back from the Christmas break ready to explore, play and learn. We have started our new topic of ‘traditional tales’, focusing on ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. The children have enjoyed acting out the stories and making character hats.

HEADTEACHERS MESSAGE
Happy New Year to you all. I am hoping everybody had a good relaxing break with family and friends.
It has been quite a mild Winter so far but it is set to get colder in the next few weeks. Please make sure that all coats have names in. It is so much easier to get lost property back to its owner if coats and jumpers are clearly labelled with your child's name in an obvious place.
If the weather turns really cold or there is snow there can be disruption to transport. In extreme weather school will keep you informed via the website and by text services about the status of school. If you currently receive texts from us there will not be a problem, but some people change phone numbers regularly and forget to update the school with their new number. Please ensure the school has your current mobile phone number.
At the end of last term I had a couple of issues with the children bringing in toys, games or money from home and them going missing or being given to other children. Please do not allow your child to bring in toys or games from home. Any money brought in is likely to be small amounts for cake sales and charity donations. Large amounts of money are never requested by school as all payments are made online.
Many thanks for your help with this.
CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY
Thank you to all who donated to Save the Children. We raised £271.75.
FOOD BANK DONATIONS
Thank you to all who donated non-perishables to the food bank. They were very grateful.

Magenta having been busy writing news reports about their holidays. We spoke in news time, and recorded what we ate, who we saw and what we did during the festive period.
We are very excited about our new topic this term: castles, princesses and princes. We have been busy setting up our role play area and turning it into a small castle with turrets, thrones and royal props! We are also writing invitations for the royal visitor who is hopefully visiting us next week!
Violet class are already loving our new Ancient Egypt topic, 'treasured tombs and fascinating Pharaohs!’. On Monday, we came in to school to discover a locked box that had been found in an Egyptian tomb. We worked in teams to translate hieroglyphic clues to crack the code and open the mystery box. Inside were a variety of Egyptian artefacts, such as the top of a canopic jar, an amulet and a shabti figure. In the afternoon, we made our own cartouches out of clay, with our names etched in hieroglyphics. We can't wait to learn all about Egypt over the next six weeks!
Coral class have had great start to the term. They started the week sharing what they had done during the holidays and have all come up with their own new year resolutions for 2019. We had an exciting visit from a zoo to launch our new topic, ‘amazing animals’. The children were very brave and enthusiastic as they volunteered to hold and feel the different animals. We met a lizard, a snake, a cheeky parrot called Valentine and a very fluffy meerkat. The children are already proving to be animal experts!
On Monday, for our new topic's ‘hook’, we made model farms! We firstly learnt about different types of farming in the U.K. and how different parts of the U.K. are more suited to certain types of crops or animals. We watched a video about farming, learning how complicated and what hard work it is! We then designed farms in groups, focusing on where to put
different crop or animal fields, and how the farmer is to get from one place to another.
Spending time building our model farms was great fun!

Saffron class are really looking forward to their trip to the London Transport Museum on Monday. This week they have been learning about the history of transport in preparation for the trip.
'An omnibus is an old bus. It needed two horses to pull it, because it didn't have an
engine.' Amelie
'A long time ago important people were carried around
in sedan chairs.' Kevin
'The first ones were made in China 4000 years ago!'
Tochukwu
'Penny farthings are old bikes, that had a big wheel at the front and a tiny wheel at the
back. They are slow.' Alex
‘Carriages had no engine, so
horses pulled them.’ Van
'The first car had an engine at the back, but no windows, door or
roof.' Safiyah
