One out of 10 daycaresin Chilliwack has beendeemed a “high inspec-tion priority” by Fra-

ser Health for reasons that includeconfirmed abuse, untrained staff orinappropriate responses to report-able incidents, according to dataobtained by the Vancouver Sun.

Of the 112 providers in Chilliwack,17 had a “moderate” rating and 84were rated “low.”

The priority ratings—which usedto be called “risk ratings” until theSun produced a searchable data-base of those rankings in 2008—areassigned to daycares for infants andtoddlers as well as preschools andafter-school care facilities.

For more than a decade, healthauthority inspectors have been rat-ing licensed daycares, giving out akind of report card on the health andsafety problems at each facility.

About once a year, each daycaregets a visit from an inspector and isgraded on six separate factors, fromhow qualified its staff are to whetherit has a history of serious incidentsand abuse.

The inspector then gives the facil-ity a mark out of 65, which, in turn, determines the facility’s “inspection-priority level.”

Health authority officials say thoselevels are used to decide how todeploy its inspectors: Daycares witha “low” rating get a single inspection

Tim Bumby had a couple of ter-rible days this week. First, hewas hit with a heart attack on

the weekend, then a fire destroyedhis house on Monday.

On Sunday night, Bumby went tothe hospital after suffering what hecalled a “small heart attack.” Becauseof that, the Promontory resident wasspending Monday resting at home.

He told the Times he was sleep-ing on the couch before noon whenthe phone rang. He didn’t feel likeanswering it, but the call woke him upand that’s when he smelled smoke.

“If that phone call hadn’t havecome, I would have been in trou-

ble,” he said, sitting on a chair in hisneighbour Chris Poulton’s drivewayas the Chilliwack Fire Departmentfought the fire.

Poulton said when he came out-side he saw flames coming out of thegarage where Bumby stored a boat.He also said it was at least 20 min-utes, maybe 25, from the time hesaw flames to the time the first firedepartment hoses started.

As of press time, the cause of thefire was yet to be determined.

Bumby was the only one in thehouse at the time of the fire and hetold the Times he had no idea how itcould have started.

His adult children and his dis-traught wife arrived on the scene asthe blaze was being extinguished.

for sale and that Graham Lee—who owns RG Properties, aVancouver development compa-ny—had been spotted at a Bruinsgame. That same day the Victo-ria Times-Colonist reported thatthe City of Victoria will extendRG Properties’ lease on that city’s7,400-seat arena if the companyattracts a Western Hockey Leagueteam.

On Friday, Western HockeyLeague commissioner Ron Robi-son told the Times that majorjunior hockey can still succeed inChilliwack despite sagging ticketsales since the Abbotsford Heatmoved in next door.

Chilliwack’s home games haveaveraged 3,321 fans this year, good for 16th out of 22 teams inthe league. That number is downfrom the club’s first two years inthe city but up seven per centfrom last year.

“The market has been impact-ed to some extent by the Ameri-can Hockey League in Abbotsfordbut having seen it, we still see it asa viable market moving forward,”said Robison.

He said “there is tremendousinterest in purchasing franchisesaround the league . . . but rightnow there’s been nothing filedwith us to indicate that there’sbeen anything material occur-ring.”

That jibes with what Porter toldthe Times. He said there has beena rash of proposals to buy theclub in recent weeks and that theownership group will be review-ing each.

Any sale would need to beapproved by the league, and Rob-ison said that the league stresseskeeping teams in their currentmarkets.

“It’s clearly our desire to keep

them where they are,” he toldthe Times. “From time to timewe have to review relocation butthat’s been very rare. There hasn’tbeen a relocation in our leaguefor many, many years.”

The last relocation took placein 1998 when the Edmonton Icemoved to Cranbrook and becamethe Kootenay Ice. In 2005, Porterproposed to move the Tri-CityAmericans to Chilliwack, butthat plan was voted down bythe league’s board of governors.Instead, Chilliwack was grantedan expansion franchise and anew ownership group was foundto keep the team in theKennewick, Wash.

“Our desire is to keepour franchises wherethey are currentlyoperating,” Robisontold the Times on Fri-day. While each bid tobuy a club is evaluatedon its own merit, Robi-son said the leaguewould prefer bids thatwould keep a franchise in itspresent location.

However, on the same day,Robison told the Victoria Times-Colonist that theWestern HockeyLeague would prefer to relocatea team to Victoria, rather thanexpand.

“We have strong interest in theVictoria market,” he said. “We donot foresee, however, expansion. The ideal scenario for us is torelocate a franchise to Victoria.”

Porter said it is not unusual forprospective buyers to kick thetires on WHL franchises and saidhe can’t understand the interestin the owners’ deliberations.

“We also don’t expect thatwe should be expected as busi-

ness guys to play that out in themedia,” he said. “The truth of itlately is there has been multipleexpressions of interest and offersmade, all in the last number ofweeks, and the truth of it is we aregoing through the process of fig-uring out and reviewing them all.And there’s nothing more to that.

“This has been a particularrush of it and that’s why I don’tthink it’s a story. I just thinkpeople are preying because theyunderstand that we’re not draw-ing well, our team’s not playinggood, Abbotsford’s there—forwhatever reason.”

A s k e d w h a t h ewould say to wor-ried fans, Porter said:“We’re trying to workthrough these variousexpressions of interestas fast as we can.”

Pressed on whetherhe could guaranteethat the Bruins willbe playing in Chilli-wack next year, Porter

told the Times, “I just don’t wantto comment on that becauseI haven’t got my head aroundwhat these offers mean and whothey are.

“It’s harsh to say this, I just don’tthink it’s the business of every-body what we do in this stage. Ifnobody would have found outabout it, it would never havebeen any news. And I think wehave a right as owners to reviewour position when these offersare coming in and I’m going toleave it at that.”

Many Bruins fans, however, disagreed with that sentiment.

On an Internet message boardpopular with Bruins supporters, fans have expressed disbelief and

anger that the team might be onthe way out of town. Many point-ed to a time- and money-con-suming emotional investmentthat may be about to go bust.

Colin MacMillan, the site’sdeveloper and a Bruins seasonticket holder since day one, saidhe and his girlfriend have thrownthemselves passionately behindthe Bruins.

“We’ve invested a lot of ourown money supporting thisteam, travelling, buying mer-chandise, that kind of stuff. Wewould kind of like to have somehonesty and clarity,” he told theTimes.

Fans began to discuss thepotential sale of the Bruins onThursday, prompting a doubtingresponse from MacMillan.

“You don’t speak for all of us,”he wrote to another fan worriedabout the absence of season ticketinformation. “I’m not concernedin the least. We’re barely even twoyears in to the Habscheid era andthe team is slowly but surely mak-ing progress.”

However, less than 24 hourslater, he had made a 180-degreeturn, stating his belief that theBruins may be on their way out oftown, despite a feeling that Chilli-wack can support a WHL team.

For fans like MacMillan thatuncertainty, and worry, has taint-ed the Bruins longest winningstreak of the season.

“The thing that frustrates methe most about the whole thingis we’ve sat through years of sub-.500 hockey, playoff disappoint-ments and now that we’re seeingthis team improve, we may noteven see them next year. That’sthe most frustrating part.”

Perhaps the strangest part of theChil l iwack Bruins saga that iscurrently unfolding is how the

actions of a diehard conservative publicpolicy institute in Phoenix, Ariz., mayaffect the future of hockey in the FraserValley.

The Goldwater Institute has threateneda lawsuit against the city of Glendale,Ariz., which has supported a Chicagobusinessman’s attempt to buy thestruggling Phoenix Coyotes, which play inan arena in Glendale.

The Goldwater institute says that thecity—which plans on issuing bonds tohelp pay for the purchase of the team—shouldn’t be able to subsidize a privatebusiness, like the Coyotes.

If it manages to prevent, or evendelay, the sale of the club, it could begina domino effect that ends with theChilliwack Bruins.

The reasoning goes like this:The Coyotes would move back to

Winnipeg, where they would becomethe Jets and unseat the American HockeyLeague’s Manitoba Moose, which is aminor hockey league affiliate of theVancouver Canucks.

The Moose, in turn, could move toVictoria, which currently hosts an EastCoast Hockey League team also affiliatedwith the Canucks.

That in turn could have an effect onwhether Victoria remains a desireddestination for a Western Hockey Leaguefranchise.

That, of course, is just speculation, asare the rumours that the Moose could landcloser to home, perhaps in Abbotsford.

Would need league approval to moveDomino effectcould startwith Phoenix

CHILLIWACK TIMES TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2011 A05

BY CORNELIA [email protected]

Just as local students prepare to bust out fortwo weeks of spring break starting Friday, the Chilliwack school district is recom-

mending schools go back to a one-week breaknext year.

“From looking at all the different pieces, wejust feel that’s the best recommendation tomake,” said superintendent Corrine McCabe.

Trustees will vote on the change at a regularpublic meeting today (March 8).

The board narrowly approved this year’stwo-week break last March as a cost savingmeasure when it looked like the district mightbe facing a $5 million shortfall for the 2010-2011 school year.

Officials estimated closing schools for oneextra week would save $200,000 in transpor-tation and utility costs as well as salaries forsubstitute teachers and 10-month CUPE staff, who work as education assistants (EAs), secre-taries and custodians.

(Management staff, teachers and 12-monthCUPE employees are paid through the breakas per their contracts.)

As some of the district’s lowest-paid staff,10-month CUPE employees expressed dismayat losing a week of work when the extendedbreak was approved last year.

McCabe, however, said the district was ableto save jobs by cutting time but admitted thesituation was not ideal.

“In order to go to a two-week spring break, our 10-month CUPE staff are basically takinga week without pay. That’s problematic for us,”

she said. That view was echoed by CUPE president

Rod Isaac.“It has had an impact, and I’m glad they real-

ize that,” said Isaac in a Times interview. The District Parent Advisory Council, mean-

while, supports the recommendation to moveback to a one-week spring break for other rea-sons.

Tacking a few extra minutes to the end of theschool day (the district’s method of making upthe time lost during the extra week off) doesn’tmake up for the loss of a week’s education forstudents, said DPAC president Kirsten Bran-dreth in an e-mail to theTimes.

“Also most families cannot afford to takea two-week vacation,” she said, “so many ofour kids this year will be sitting around doingnothing for the time off.”

She added that going back to a one-weekbreak will also take financial pressure off work-ing parents who will face extra daycare expens-es during this month’s extended break.

Going to a two-week break this year meantaltering the standard provincial school calen-dar, and legislation required the board to gath-er public input before making the change.

Because switching back to a one-week break(from March 19 to 23) means a return to thestandard school calendar set by the ministryof education, the district isn’t obligated to getinput from the public this time around, andthe decision will go directly to the board.

◗ Tuesday’s school board meeting starts at 7p.m. at the school district office (8430 CessnaDr.).

Boater caught in a netA boater who was plucked

from the Fraser River lateThursday night was cold andwet but otherwise uninjuredafter his boat was immobi-lized by an old fishing net.

The Mission man hadlaunched his aluminumboat Thursday evening atOld Orchard Road, but whenhe failed to reach a meetingpoint his family became con-cerned and called police.

The man had fishing gearand clothing designed forcold weather, but no oars, cell phone or other survivalgear.

While Chilliwack Searchand Rescue searched for theman by boat, an RCMP heli-copter searched from theair. At 11:30 p.m., nearly fourhours after the man was firstreported missing, a boatwas spotted two kilometreswest of the Old Orchard boatlaunch and about 40 feetfrom shore.

“The fisherman waslocated in the boat by searchand rescue and taken to anawaiting ambulance,” saidRCMP spokesperson Cpl.Tammy Hollingsworth. “Theboater was uninjured, butwas very cold and wet. Hewas assessed by paramedicsfor cold weather exposureand released to relievedfamily members.”

Still getting tips on silver theftMounties say they have

received numerous tipsabout the theft of hundredsof pounds of silver bullionfrom a Little Mountainhouse last month but havenot yet made any arrests.

“The theft of $750,000in silver is not somethingtypically seen outside of aHollywood action movie. The sheer quantity of thetheft and the daytime homeinvasion makes this offenceunique and concerning,”said Const. Bryan Martellfrom the Chilliwack GeneralInvestigative Support Team.“Chilliwack is our com-munity and although thesecriminals may think theycan pull of a blockbusterheist, we are eager to returnthese silver bars to theirowner and put the offendersbehind solid steel bars.”

Police are still hoping for

tips to crack the case. Any-one with information cancall the RCMP at 604-792-4611, or Crime Stoppers—which pays rewards forinformation leading to anarrest—at 1-800-222-8477.

Thieves at it againThe Chilliwack RCMP is

reminding residents to safe-guard their property whenthey leave their homes aftera pair of break-and-enterslast week.

Police say break-ins to twohomes in the 46500 blockof Stoney Creek Drive werereported within a half-hourof each other last Monday.

“Suspects forced entryinto both of the residencesand several items weretaken from both homesincluding large items suchas televisions,” said Hol-lingsworth. “Thieves havebeen regularly breaking intohomes during the daytimehours.”

Hollingsworth said “thesehomes may have been tar-geted because there was nosign of anyone being home.”

Police say residentsleaving their homes forextended periods of timeshould ensure that mail andnewspapers are regularlycollected and yard work isdone.

Other tips include:◗ Don’t give away yourabsence by leaving messageson your door, on your mail-box or on your answeringmachine;◗ Have your neighbour parka car in front of your houseor in your driveway occa-sionally;◗ Ask your neighbour to puta full garbage can in front ofyour house on garbage col-lection day;◗ Give your neighbour aphone number where youcan be reached and let themknow how long you’ll begone;◗ Consider getting a dog—many kinds of dogs willmake enough noise to dis-courage burglars.

Prisoners at Mountain Institution inAgassiz are in the final stages of try-ing to form the first inmate labour

union in Canada.Their lawyer, Natalie Dunbar, says

the inmates, including the man whospearheaded the idea, are busy tryingto sign up members for a union theycall ConFederation, Canadian Prison-ers’ Labour Union, Local 001. She saidthe inmates at the Mountain Institu-tion in Agassiz have put together a con-stitution and have garnered letters of

support from other unions. After they have enough members

signed up, organizers will take their pro-posal to the Labour Board of Canada in abid to become eligible to form a union.

Dunbar stressed that the inmates arenot trying to create another prisoners’rights group, like several that exist in theU.S., but instead want a body to addressprisoners’ labour issues.

“The issues are really very simple inmany cases—they are having the properequipment to do a job, the proper tools, having safety boots.”

She did not know how many peopleat Mountain Institution have signed up,

but noted that petitions from six differ-ent jails across Canada suggest that morethan 75 per cent of the prisoner popula-tion is interested.

The prisoners created a new unionbecause they didn’t want to put any oth-er union in an awkward political posi-tion over the controversial nature of therequest.

There have been similar attempts inthe U.S., Dunbar said, but they failed tobecome legitimate unions.

Rosedale elementary andmiddle school students willhave to wait a little longer to

move into their new school. While the new $36 million, 530-

student capacity school in Rose-dale is taking shape nicely (with thestriking wooden beams in entrancealready visible), construction and

compaction challenges on the sitehave put the project about threemonths behind schedule, accord-ing to a capital projects updatethat will be presented to the boardof education tonight.

Construction on the new school, which will consolidate Rosedaleelementary and Rosedale tradi-tional middle school, was origi-nally projected to be complete intime for students to move in in

September.According to the district’s new

timeline, however, middle schoolstudents now won’t make the moveuntil Nov. 14, 2011, and Rosedaleelementary students won’t be join-ing them until Jan. 3, 2012.

“This will allow much of thedemolition work on the old middleschool to be completed before ele-mentary students move in,” readsthe update.

School and community mem-bers are invited to an open houseMarch 29 at 7 p.m. to review theprogress on the building and todiscuss issues related to establish-ing a community school.

Yarrow community school updateIn Yarrow, meanwhile, the under-

ground mechanical and electricalwork for the new $18 million Yarrowcommunity school is complete, and

contractors began pouring concretefor the tilt-up walls of the gym andchange rooms on March 3.

Preparation for the concretefloors in the NeighbourhoodLearning Centre spaces, the officeand the multipurpose room hasalso begun and well drilling for thegeothermal field begins next week.

District officials expect the Yar-row project to be complete by Jan-uary 2012.

a year, while those rated“moderate” get two andthose rated “high” get three ormore.

Of the 11 that received the“high” rating in Chilliwack(two received 53 out of 65 andfour received 47), six had thehighest possible score on thetwo categories assigned themost points.

Under“incidents and abusehistory” all six scored a 15out of 15 with the comment:“High hazard facility withreportable incidents (withinappropriate response), con-firmed abuse, investigationsand hearings OR insufficientinformation is currently avail-able.”

Under “management effec-tiveness” all six scored a 15 outof 15 with the note: “Manage-ment lacks qualification/skillsto adequately operate facilityand consistently require guid-ance OR insufficient informa-tion is currently available.”

If inspectors have insuf-ficient information for theratings, they give the highestpossible rating. As a result, newly opened facilities aremore likely to have a high rat-ing.

Chilliwack Child CareResource and Referral direc-tor Barb Presseau suggestedthe ratings could be mislead-ing.

“Sometimes the hazard, letssay a high hazard, could bedue to something that a par-ent may not be concernedabout,” she said. “[For exam-ple] recently been doing reno-vations and something wasn’tboarded in yet or let’s say the

bleach happened to be sittingout on the counter and is usu-ally in a locked cupboard.”

Presseau said the informa-tion available to parents in theonline database is valuable, but should be looked intobefore drawing conclusions.

“If a provider was on mylist as a potential person tocare for my child, I would askthem about it,” she said. “Justsay ‘I looked at the rating, canyou show me the report?’”

Presseau said parentsshould also call the licens-ing provider, which is FraserHealth.

The 9.8 per cent of provid-ers with a high rating in Chilli-wack is slightly above the 7.5per cent out of the total 2,905daycares in Metro Vancouverand the FraserValley.

Out of eight daycares inAgassiz, three had a “mod-erate” rating and five had a“low” rating.

The one daycare listed inHarrison Hot Springs had a“low” rating, while the one inCultus Lake had a “high” rat-ing of 47 out of 65.

Andersen promoted thepositives in the Chilliwackmarket in a press releaseissued Thursday.

“While we’re not immuneto outside influences, typi-

The Chilliwack Times is adivision of Postmedia Commu-nity Publishing, located at 45951Trethewey Ave., Chilliwack, B.C.

2011 is shaping up to be a prettydecent year for ordinary Cana-dians. The federal governmentrecently introduced proposedchanges to the Criminal Code thatwould see an expansion of the rightto citizens’ arrests and self-defence.

A handful of high-profile caseshave served to highlight the absur-dity of the present state of legisla-tion in these areas.

First we had the case of DavidChen, the Toronto area grocerwho, along with his employees, was charged for detaining a repeatshoplifter. The ultimate insult wasan additional charge of being inpossession of a concealed weapon;a box cutter. The guy is a grocerand police wanted to charge himfor having one of the tools of histrade on his person. That suresays something for the qualityof recruits coming out of policeacademies these days.

To add even more insult, theCrown cut a sweetheart deal withthe thief in return for his co-oper-ation in helping to lock up Chen. After howls of outrage over thecharges, the grocer was eventuallyacquitted, much to the disgust ofprosecutors.

Then we have Ian Thomson. He awoke to find three maskedmen fire bombing his home andscreaming aloud, “are you readyto die?” Ian, a former firearmsinstructor, grabbed a legally

owned handgun and fired threeshots in the air, scaring away thecreeps. Police eventually arrivedand charged him with pointingand using a firearm among otheroffences. The most serious ofthese charges have since beendropped.

There’s a long legacy of similarcases in this country. A hom-eowner or small business personattempts to protect himself, hisfamily, his home or business andends up being the one Crownwants to throw in jail.

Clearly there’s a need to guardagainst vigilantism and trigger-happy homeowners who may beprone to impulsive over reaction. But the pendulum has swung sofar the other way that the typicalcitizen has virtually been deprivedof any right to self-protectionwhatsoever.

Police, prosecutors and theprevious federal government havelong been quite content with thisarrangement. The firearm registryitself was little more than a mis-chievous strategy to criminalize

homeowners before the fact whomight attempt to protect theirfamily.

Despite provisions in the Com-mon Law regarding self protec-tion and a legislated right to selfdefence, lawmakers and criminaljustice practitioners have longmade it their mission to ensurethat citizens and property ownersare virtually helpless when underthreat or attack.

To do otherwise would forcethem to acknowledge individualrights. And in a country wheregroup rights and governmentrights always trump the individual, this just wasn’t going to happen.

Until now.It appears the federal govern-

ment is serious about restoringsome sanity to the self-defenceprovisions of the Criminal Codeand in a move that must beabsolutely horrifying to so-calledprogressives, has actually sidedwith law-abiding citizens overcriminals.

2011 still has a ways to go.Hopefully additional commonsense reforms are on the way.

Deservesits day incourtI

t’s only one more step in an arduousprocess—but for the labour move-ment, and the family, friends andco-workers of a man who died in a

workplace accident in a New Westmin-ster sawmill more than six years ago—it’smonumental.

Lyle Hewer died on Nov. 17, 2004, atWeyerhauser’s now-closed New Westmin-ster sawmill. Hewer was clearing the bot-tom of a large grinding machine calleda hog. The debris of wood chips wedgedabove him came loose while he wasworking on it and smothered him. Work-safe B.C. said management condoned aculture where “complacency in the faceof danger became the norm.” The com-pany was levied a fine of $297,000.

But the United Steelworkers wantedmore than a fine levied against the com-pany and a stinging report. They wantedjustice. Even though city police recom-mended charges, Crown counsel declinedto press criminal charges.

The steelworkers union also had arecent change in the Criminal Codewhich paved the way for its actions. TheWestray amendments, which came intoeffect in 2004, were triggered by the deathof 26 Nova Scotia coal miners in 1992. Nolonger could companies escape criminalliability.

Finally, this past week a provincialcourt judge ruled that the union maycontinue to proceed in its private pros-ecution of Weyerhauser.

Of course the union hopes that theattorney general’s office will step in andpress charges. And so do we.

Companies are responsible for thesafety of their employees. With more eco-nomic pressures it becomes even morevital for companies to be held account-able for cutting corners where safety isconcerned. In many cases it is a matterof life and death —it certainly was in LyleHewer’s case.

This case cries out for its day in court.

Editor:In response to your March

4 article about teacher bar-gaining, I am writing to cor-rect the inference that theBC Public School EmployersAssociation (BCPSEA) hasimposed a direction on localboards regarding bargainingstructure. To the contrary,BCPSEA represents localboards, by keeping in con-stant contact with them, bysurveying them, throughdirection of a representativecouncil of all boards in B.C.,and through the annualelection of nine school trust-ees (including me) to the 13voting positions that governthe organization.

The BCPSEA positionstated in your article that“expanded local bargainingwould lead to duplicationand inefficiency” is support-ed by this process of listen-ing to the publicly electedboards across B.C. I wouldadd that many boards don’tfeel we have the human andfinancial resources to allo-cate to such administrativeduplication at a time whenwe are hard-pressed to getas many dollars into theclassroom (i.e. to directlyimprove class size and com-position) as we’d like to.

Furthermore, the cur-rent split of local and pro-vincial bargaining itemsis not under the authorityof either BCPSEA alone,or local negotiating tables. This structure was set outby provincial legislation in1994 followed by a Letter ofUnderstanding co-opera-tively developed and agreedto by the BC Teachers’ Fed-eration (BCTF).

The BCTF has advisedBCPSEA that it no longerfeels this division works forthem, and even with ourown “direction” from boardsto avoid duplication andinefficiency, BCPSEA hasresponded by offering tohave a constructive discus-sion to examine teachers’concerns. If locals such asthe Chilliwack Teachers’Association really want adifferent local-provincialsplit, they may want to urgetheir provincial federationto accept BCPSEA’s offer of adiscussion, rather than tar-get the locally elected trust-ees with whom they claimthey’d prefer to negotiate.

Busing fees notgood for healthEditor:

Paying large amountsfor busing to school costsmoney, but it is mandatoryto go to school.

I have been taking aschool bus to school for 10years because my parentsboth work full-time jobs thatrequire them to have earlyhours. As of this year mysister and I have to pay $200each to take the school bus.

The school district saysthey are charging to take theschool bus to help offset therising costs of transporta-tion in the Chilliwack SchoolDistrict. The cost to take astudent to and from schoolis approximately $1,150 peryear. But what if your familycan’t afford the busing fee?

To bus one child, it cost$200 and if your family hasmore than three studentsall you have to pay is $600.Families who have a finan-cial hardship may have thefees waived for the year bythe school principal, or stu-dent service.

Not only do regular stu-dents have to pay for trans-portation, but if you play onan athletic team from Grade7 to Grade 12 you now haveto pay for busing. I under-stand why high schools haveto pay for transportationfor sports team becausethey travel to schools inAbbotsford and Langley. Butmiddle school students onlytravel within Chilliwack andare charged money as of thisyear.

In Chilliwack, the expensesfor sports and other schoolactivities affect the numbersof participants involvedwithin these programs. Stu-dent numbers involved insport are going down andthis doesn’t assist in our fight

for healthy living.The Chilliwack School

District needs to try to helpthe student body by pro-viding busing for studentsat least to get to school, because school attendanceis necessary.

Students wantto know whyEditor.

I’ve been informed by afew of my peers at Sardissecondary that we will onlybe having a one-week springbreak next year.

Schools should be run asa democracy, not as the stu-dents picking the principals, but the students havingmore choice in what reallyhappens with the school. If the government wantskids to be interested inpolitics then they need to beinvolved more and see thedifference that each personcan make through voting.

Students would be moreinterested in school if theyhad more of a say in thescheduling and other things.

Many students aren’thappy, one of my class-mates said humorously butnot, “Giving one two-weekspring break is just liketeasing us, and what reallyallows them to make thatdecision so early?”

Shouldn’t the studentshave a say in how theschedule should look forthe next year? Obviously notwhen there are real solidreasons of why we cannot, but I believe that the schoolboard should have to tellthe public those reasons.Students want to know why, they want to take part.

And voila!Like a magician turning a fast-

food hamburger into prime rib,the Chilliwack Bruins have rathersuddenly turned a middling anddisappointing season around.

The Bruins won all three gamesthey played this weekend and nowseem destined to be a feared play-off opponent come late-March.This weekend’s sweep was cappedwith a convincing 6-2 victory overthe Western Conference’s bestteam, the Portland Winterhawks.

That victory pushed the Bru-ins’ win streak to a season-highfive games and left them in sixthplace in the conference, withthree points and three otherteams between themselves andthe ninth-place Kamloops Blazers, whom they defeated Saturday.

Lucas Gore made 43 shots Sun-day night against the Winterhawkswhile Brandon Manning regis-tered his first hat trick.

Manning blasted a power playslap shot past Portland goalieKeith Hamilton early in the first

period, then followed that upwith another point blast at evenstrength just five minutes later togive the Bruins an early lead.

Portland responded late in theperiod but T.C. Cratsenberg scoredin the second to extend the Bru-ins’ edge. It was narrowed to one

again midway through the secondperiod, but Manning’s third goal, just 42 seconds into the period, not only sealed the victory forChilliwack, but it made the Bruinscaptain the first defenceman, andonly the fourth player, in teamhistory to score three times in a

game.Ryan Howse—one of those

other three players—added his48th of the year late, while JamieCrooks notched his fourth goal inas many games.

Manning and Howse also bothscored the previous night against

Kamloops as the Bruins skated toa 4-1 victory in a tight-checkingaffair.

And Friday night, Crooks wasthe lone goal scorer as Chilliwackwon a rare 1-0 game against theKelowna Rockets. Gore made 29saves for his third shutout of theseason.

After sustaining injury-after-injury to key players, the Bruins’core is finally healthy and, for thefirst time this season, playing likethe highly-touted team they wereentering the season.

The play of Manning and Howsehave driven the team’s fortunes allseason, and both are now on thetop of their games. But just as cru-cially, Chilliwack is finally gettingtimely goals from secondary scor-ers like Crooks.

Dylen McKinlay scored his firstgoal in nearly two months againstKamloops on Saturday and if hecan regain his form from last year, the Bruins may be able to claimtheir first playoff series win thisspring.

BY TYLER [email protected]

As a freshman, Chilliwack’s Micah Cockrillwas expected to ride the pine for his firstyear of college basketball with the Uni-

versity of British Columbia—Okanagan Heat.Instead, Cockrill became an offensive cata-

lyst for the Heat and last week was named toboth the British Columbia Colleges’ AthleticAssociation (BCCAA) second-team all-star andthe BCCAA’s all-rookie team.

It wasn’t a perfect week for Cockrill, though,as the Heat’s season ended Thursday after a103-86 quarter-final loss to the Douglas Col-lege Royals.

But aside from its end, the six-foot-six Cock-rill was delighted with how his rookie seasonturned out.

“It’s gone really well,” he told the Times.“Better than I ever could have imagined. Beinga rookie you don’t expect to have a lot of play-ing time but this year’s been great. I’ve playeda ton of minutes and played a big role on theteam.”

Those numbers came despite making thedifficult jump from high school ball—hestarred at G.W. Graham—to the college game, where much more is expected from studentathletes.

“It’s a lot more intense,” he said. Not only arethe players stronger and faster, but the coachesare full-time professionals and “most guys areon scholarships so there are expectations thathave been put forward.”

Despite that, Cockrill has thrived, averaging13.7 points per game, punctuated by a season-high 28-point outburst against the DouglasCollege Royals, during which he went a ridicu-lous eight-for-14 from the three-point line.

Off the court Cockrill is also enjoying life at

UBCO’s Kelowna campus and taking first-yeargeneral studies courses.

Next year, however, will require him to stepup his game even further as next year the Heatwill move up to play in the tougher CanadaWest Universities Athletic Association (and inwhich the University of the Fraser Valley com-petes).

While Cockrill says the change may be “likeanother rookie season.” But if that “rookie”year is anything like the one he has just fin-ished, Cockrill will be just fine.

Golden Ticket means goldenmedals for Fusion crews

Fusion Athletics cheer-leading teams claimed twogold medals during theGolden Ticket Champion-

ships Saturday in Vancouver. The junior and senior

squads each claimed first-place finishes while its SolidStrong squad finished third, just half a point out of first. The youth team finishedsecond, the minis claimedfourth place and the tinysquad was “fabulous.”

U15 Strikers edged by high-powered Wanderers’ offence

Chilliwack’s U15 Strikersgirl soccer squad fell 1-0in their final game of theseason to the Tsawwassen

Wanderers.Facing the Wanderers’

high-powered offence, Chilli-wack held their own despitejust barely being able to fielda full squad.

Though the Amix Salvageand Sales-sponsored Strik-ers did mount some attacks, they were turned aside fromgetting the all-important fin-ishing touch.

The Wanderers hit twocrossbars in the first halfand then another one inthe second half as the playslowly turned toward the

Strikers’ goal.Unable to make any

changes of their own, theStrikers could only play adefensive game and it wasonly a matter of time beforethe Wanderers cashed in. Thedecisive goal came at the 22-minute mark on one of themany scrambles near the topof the Chilliwack 18-yard-box when a ball was sentthrough to a Tsawwassen for-ward. Though it looked off-side, no call was made, andshe slammed a shot into thefar, low corner of the net.

The Chilliwack Optimist Club held itsannual essay contest with 12 entriesbeing submitted.

The topic this year was: “How My Educa-tion is the Key to a Successful Future.”

“It was a very interesting topic and thejudges had a tough time picking a winnerbecause the entries were excellent,” saidGlenda Standeven, contest chair.

First-place winner was 16-year-old Eliza-beth Ogunrinola from Sardis secondaryschool, who was very excited about her win.The essay now moves on to the next levelof the competition to compete for a $2,500scholarship.

“I believe Chilliwack secondary school hashad two or three scholarship winners in thepast,” Standeven said, “but this is our firstentry from Sardis and it would be nice to seeElizabeth win the District Essay Contest.”

There was also an entry from a student inVernon this year because Chilliwack Opti-mist Club was the nearest club holding acontest. The contest is open to all studentsunder the age of 19 as of Dec. 31 of the

school year.Second- and third-place winners, Cody Moore

and Thomas Davies respectively, both camefrom Chilliwack secondary’ advanced Englishclass under the tutelage of Muriel Morris.

“Ms. Morris really encourages her studentsto participate in the event and they alwaysdo well,” Standeven said.

This year, the Optimist Club will awardfirst, second and third cash prizes of $100,$50, and $25, respectively. Ogunrinola,Moore and Davies will be guests of honourat a brunch at Dakota’s Restaurant on April2 at 11:30 a.m. where they will receive theirprize money from Optimist Club presidentWilf Lowdell along with certificates of par-ticipation, medallions, and a gift of appre-ciation from Standeven.

The contest judges, Paula Mickler, RonMcAndrew, and Karin Stief-Passion, will alsobe guests of the Optimist Club at the brunchwhich will allow them the opportunity tocommend the students on their essays. Thewinners will be invited to read their winningessays as well.
