Church Vitality:
We Learn
and We
Grow
How do modern
churches navigate
the some-times treacherous waters of societal change?
How do we adapt and solve new and pervasive financial challenges?
These were among the questions addressed at a Feb. 12 workshop sponsored by the
UCC So. Cal/Nevada Conference and held at La Mesa UCC. The KCC contingent included Dick Wayman, Tony and Beth Guepin, Steve
Davis, Cathy Stephenson and Rev. Paula Elizabeth.
Learn more about the workshop by talking to these members or read more about it online
at http://www.scncucc.org/voices/2012/03/ucc-conference-church-life/mission-money-
church-vitality-2012-workshop-united-church-of-christ-of-la-mesa/.
We thank the attendees for devoting their time to learning more about these important matters and exploring options that will con-
tribute to the long-term vitality of our church.

news that they are no longer being considered.
Begun review of another 20 profiles.
Held a mock interview with a local settled UCC minister to evaluate and refine our interview strategies/skills and will now proceed to the actual

Reverend Louis Wargo, Pastor Emeritus, 1939 - 2012
Our friend and former pastor passed away on March 16 in Beavertown, Oregon. Services were held at Bethel Congregational Church in Beavertown on March 21. You may upload memories, photos and leave messages for the family at http://www.finleysunsethills.com.
Louis G. Wargo was born January 22, 1939 in Norwalk, Connecticut. He graduated from Franklin & Marshall College, and from Yale Divinity School. He received full scholarships and a preaching award. He was ordained in the Hungarian Reformed Church in Norwalk and served churches in South Dakota and Minnesota in the early part of his call. In 1972 Louis began serving at Excelsior Con-gregational Church in Excelsior, Minnesota where he expanded the con-gregation from 250 to 800 members. At Westminster Congregational Church in Spokane, Washington, he started a program that provided Christmas gifts to more than 6,000 needy children and families. While at Faith Church in Indianapolis, he served on the Board of Directors for the ACLU and wrote articles regarding separation of church & state. His final calling was to Kensington Community Church in San Diego, California where he served until his retirement in 2005. It was here that he was Vice Moderator and Moderator for the Southern California Conference for 2 years as well as serving on the Copley YMCA Board of Managers for 9 years.
Lou is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jan; his three children, Rick, Beth & Robb; two stepchildren, Peter & Diana and four grandchildren, Jackie, Victoria, Luke & Megan. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations in Lou’s memory will be graciously accepted by the following organizations:

KCC Adopts Budget And Five Year Fiscal Plan
To Address Deficit
Last month, KCC adopted a 2012 budget and a five-year fiscal plan at its March 11 congregational meeting, putting KCC on a sound financial path for the future.
The 2012 budget reflects anticipated operating income of $445,889, which includes tithes and offerings, income from building use, rental properties and preschool tuition, fundraisers and all other income. The budget reflects anticipated operating expenses of $520,074, for a projected deficit of $74,185.
The fiscal plan calls for modest increases in annual expenses, a 10 percent annual increase in tithes and offerings, a 2 percent annual increase in other income, increased annual fundraising income, and use of a total of $151,503 from the Lander funds, so that KCC reduces its deficit each year and achieves a budget surplus by 2016.
This year’s budget process was complex, and many KCC members contributed to the formulation of the annual budget and the five-year fiscal plan. Thank you to:
Treasurer Dick Wayman for his tireless number-crunching and his
even keel;
Stewardship Committee chair Cathy Stephenson for her excellent
guidance of the Fiscal Plan Task Force;
The members of the Fiscal Plan Task Force – Sheryl Chaffee, Steve Davis, Martha Fuller, Beth Guepin, Joann Morrison, Jim Ward, Penny Ward, Dick Wayman, Joan Wayman and Rich Wayman – for
volunteering their time to help formulate the five-year fiscal plan;
The Trustees and Council, for working thoughtfully to recommend a proposed budget and fiscal plan, guided by practical realities as well
as faith in our congregation;
Rev. Paula Elizabeth, for helping remind us of KCC’s mission, vision
and values throughout the budget and fiscal plan process;
