CHINA OverviewChina is seen variously as an ancient civilization extending over a large area in east Asia, a nation or a multinational entity. With nearly 4000 years of continuous history, china is one of the world’s oldest civilizations.

In 1949, after a major combat ended in the Chinese civil war, two states calling themselves “china” emerged.

1). The people’s republic of china (PRC), established in1949, commonly known as china, has control over mainland china and the largely self-governing territories of Hong Kong and Macou.

2). The republic of china (ROC) established in1912 in mainland china, now commonly known as Taiwan, has control over the islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu.

ECONOMY

World’s Second Largest Economy

Fastest growing major economy with average growth rate of 10% for the past 30 yrs

Second largest exporter and largest importer of goods in the world

Top 6 trade partners – US, JAPAN, HONGKONG, SOUTH KOREA, TAIWAN, GERMANY

China now participates extensively in the world market and private sectors companies play a major role in the economy. According to china’s official statistics, the poverty rate fell from 53% in 1981 to 2.5% in 2005.

The PRC governments decision to permit china to be used by multinational corporations as an export platform has made the country a major competitor to other Asian led- economies, such as south Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. The government has also focused on foreign trade as a major vehicle for economic growth.

ENVIRONMENT•The environment in the people’s republic in china has traditionally been neglected as the country concentrates on its rise as an economic power.

•A lot of the pollution in china nowadays is generated for producing the cheap products that fill stores in the US and Europe.

•Despite a recent interest in environmental reform, pollution has made cancer, the leading cause of death in 30 cities, the ministry of health says.

•China is also the largest contributor to world, levels of sulfur oxides, chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone depleting substances. China can suffer some of the effects of global warming, including sea level rise and glacier retreat.

•On June, 2008, the government enacted a rule for the entire country of china, all supermarkets, departmental stores and the shops prohibited from giving out free plastic bags. Since the ban, there has been ten percent fewer plastic bags thrown away.

•People have plenty of time. It is very family oriented. Food is the center of people’s life.

•They give main importance to their arts, scholarships and their literature.

•In china, most families are only able to have one child. This is due to one child policy established by Chinese leader DENG XIAOPING in 1979 to limit china’s population growth.

•Most social values are derived from Confucianism and Taoism. Chinese marriage and Taoist sexual practices are some of the customs and rituals found in the society.

•Beijing began its astonishing rise by devaluing its currency 45 percent in 1994, slashing the prices of exports in half and making imports twice as expensive. As America threw open her market and invited China to come in and capture it, China had erected a Great Wall around her own.

•Results: China's worldwide trade surplus in manufactures, $31 billion in 2001, hit $401 billion in 2007, a 1,300 percent increase in 2008 reached $500 billion. China has shoved Germany aside to become the world's greatest exporter and now leads the world in the export of manufactured goods to Japan and the European Union, as well as the United States.

•Chinese auto production has quintupled since 2001. She now produces more cars than Germany and may exceed the United States in 2009. While Chinese auto exports are still heavily in parts, finished cars are coming soon to a dealer near you. The Chinese will likely run the sword through the last standing member of America's Big Three

•With her immense trade surpluses, China's reserves have surged from $200 billion in 2002 to $2 trillion

•As America plunges into recession and our industry hollows out, while China is still growing at 9 percent, as the 20th century's greatest creditor nation now borrows from Beijing to pay for booster shots for its sick economy

Dumping

Selling at a price lower than the cost of production

Unfair Methodology adopted by US, India and other Countries –

•The anti-dumping margins are grossly overstated

•The domestic producers use them as their weapon to get advantages to the hilt.

•The zeroing methodology is widely criticized.( Zeroing methodology means that when the Indian price is higher instead of assigning a negative value to this, it attaches a zero, thus eliminating the negative trade margin)

•This is against the basic rules of WTO

•The going of the collected anti dumping duty to the domestic producer in the US doubly hurts the Chinese companies. They have to pay penance in the form of anti dumping duty and their revenue is dispersed to their domestic competitors.
