  • CHINA’S BENZENE AND TOLUENE CAPACITIES RISING CAPACITIES FOR CHINESE BENZENE- THE NEW NORMAL?

The graph shows the concentration of capacities for existing benzene and benzene derivative units. There has been an upward trend in benzene supply in 2017 due to new key projects in areas such as Huizhou and Yunnan. Meanwhile several key downstream new plants are expected to start-up in Qingdao, Huizhou, Shandong. With China’s rising capacities, what does this mean for traders and producers with the Asian region?

The map on the right shows the existing toluene-produc- ing units in the whole of China, with new capacities in Shandong, Huizhou and Yunnan expected to raise supply levels in Q4 2017. Meanwhile, there are no new key downstream new plants expected to start up until Q1 2018. Given the uneven distribution of toluene units and derivatives such as TDI, benzoic acid and benzyl chloride, what should a key strategy market players should undertake in this market of long supply?
