“THE Y IS ABOUT THE PEOPLE...” “We’ve been coming to the YMCA for over 7 years now, even before the new building was finished. When my oldest was 5 and going to school at John Yehall Chin Elementary School, her teacher recommended the Chinatown YMCA afterschool program. Ever since then, our family has been coming to the YMCA for one program or another almost every day of the week. Starting at an early age, all three of my children have participated actively at the YMCA, taking art, martial arts, swim, tutoring, etc. As a family, we often go to their family dinners and family outings. All three of them have been or are still students of the JYC Afterschool program as well as Summer School. The kids look forward to their time at the YMCA; they like the activities, the teachers and seeing their friends at the Y. For me, I also recently started participating in a program on my own at the Y. A few months ago, the Chinatown Y started offering Adult English as a Second Language classes twice a week. Although I took English classes at City College a while back, it’s been a long time and I don’t feel very comfortable with English. So now, every Wednesday and Friday, I come for a few hours to class. When we go out on class fieldtrips to test our new language skills in real situations, it feels like I’m out with family. It’s a lot of fun but also very helpful and I believe that this time around, I will be able to remember more and speak English more often. The thing that is special about the Y is about the people. This place is very comfortable and safe, but most of all, I trust the teachers and the staff here to take good care of my children. My children like it here because they are treated with respect and have found friends here. As a parent, I have grown dependent on the Y. Even with new faces on the staff, there are always some familiar ones and that’s really comforting. I hope that the Y continues their good work and carry on helping me to raise confident, independent and curious kids. Dear Friends, For more than 104 years, the Chinatown YMCA has addressed the most pressing issues and needs of our community. Today, the Chinatown YMCA continues to face unprecedented social challenges such as disparities in equal opportunities for immigrants, academic achievement, increasing stress from barriers such as poverty and social isolation , and high rates of chronic disease. At the YMCA we strive to understand the complex nature of these emerging needs and proactively develop unique programming that works to address these urgent community needs. In response to our community and in our drive toward our 2020 vision, we have been building our own capacity to do more and to do better. It has been almost five years since we moved back into our building and today we are serving over 4,600 youth, teens, and adults a year in programs that address our community’s needs. We are intentionally growing our capacities in areas of case management, digital literacy, ESL, academic support, family support and building strong collaborations with our health partners. In addition we stay anchored in our tried and true youth and teen leadership programs as part of establishing our role in our community as a collaborator, innovator and leader in providing opportunities for youth to reach their full potential and become healthy, productive adults. We are excited about our future and with you - our donors, members, volunteers, and supporters - we will continue to reach youth, teens, adults, and families who can claim the Y as a place where we all belong; a second home, a safe nurturing space where we can learn and grow healthier together.
