Hoxworth Blood Center

What is Hoxworth?

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, is the only blood center that serves the Greater Cincinnati area. The service area includes 31 hospitals in 17 coun-ties in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Hoxworth is licensed and regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Hoxworth Blood Center is also a member of America’s Blood Centers and Blood Centers of America.

What is Hoxworth’s Mission?

To enhance the well being of patients in our service area by assuring a reliable and economical supply of the safest possible blood, by providing innovative hemotherapy services, and by promoting research and education programs in transfusion medicine.

The MORE Program

Why was MORE launched?

Hoxworth Blood Center’s MORE Program was launched in an effort to increase minority blood donations. This is done by educating our community on the impor-tance of minority blood donors and their impact on our community blood supply.

What is the MORE Program’s Vision?

The vision of Hoxworth’s MORE Program is that the blood supply will reflect the diversity of our community.

About the MORE Logo

The Colors

The transition from blue to green to yellow to orange is symbolic of the transition through the seasons. This is to convey that the mission of the MORE Program is continuous and ongoing through multiple seasons and years. This is also suggestive of the seasons of life.

The Tree

The three main graphic elements of the logo, the tree horizon line in the background, the “human tree”, and the root system relate to the three components of the program - Outreach, Recruitment and Education.

The root system represents “Outreach.” Just as a tree’s root system gradually spreads over time, the Outreach efforts of the MORE team are building a stong foun-dation for the overall growth and well being of the program.

The “human tree” reprensents Recruitment.” At the very center of the MORE Program is the action of recruting minority blood donors and it all stats with one individual. It is the concept that one individual can recruit three more individuals and those three can recruit nine more, etc. It is suggestive of the chain reaction impact individuals can have when they recruit others to become involved with a great cause.

The tree horizon line in the background represents “Education.” Just as established trees provide a great support system for new growth, so does the process of educating the public on the issues that have brought about the need for the MORE Program.

The Blood Drop

Including the Hoxworth blood drop also relays that this program pertains to blood. As our Hoxworth logo continues to become more recognizable, so will he blood drop that is part of both logos. This will help people connect the MORE Program with Hoxworth.

Fewer than 5% of all eligible donors give the gift of life. The percentage

of minority donors is even lower.

Why are minority blood donors so important?

Although blood compatibility is not based on race, rare blood types often are. Numerous blood subtypes exist within certain populations. Due to the fact that there are rare blood antigens unique to African- Americans; it has been found that in many cases an African-Americans blood is a better match for an African-American patient.

The most common genetic disease affecting African-Americans is Sickle Cell Disease. By increasing minority donor particpation we can find suitable matches for more than 700 children and adults in our community who live Everyday with Sickle Cell Disease and count on blood and platelet transfusions.

“One small act is better thana thousand good intentions.”

– Ron Buchanan, Blood Donor
