CHITUNGWIZA Central Hospital

School of Nursing Choir was the toast

of the day during the belated World

Health Organisation (WHO) 70th year

commemorations held in Highlands,

Harare recently.

The celebrations, which took

place at the WHO Zimbabwe Country

Office Grounds, were this year held

under the theme “Health for All, Uni-

versal coverage: everyone every-

where” and was attended by different

delegates from the host organisation

WHO, the United Nations Develop-

ment Programme (UNDP), the United

Nations International Children’s Fund,

(UNICEF), the United Nations Educa-

tional, Scientific and Cultural Organi-

sation (UNESCO), the Ministry of

Health and Child Care (MoHCC),

Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare

(MoLSW), the Salvation Army

Church, Older People’s Board,

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals,

CCH, policy-makers and members of

the civil society.

As one senior official who

was among the guests noted, there was

form of competition among the two

choirs on the day, something which he

described as “healthy” and beneficial

to the event as well as the two health

institutions from the choirs hail from.

CCH School of Nursing Choir

thrilled with their powerful and well-

choreographed songs like “Arise and

Shine” and “Matisimudzira”, among

others, and did not disappoint with

their act which drew wild applause

from the crowd.

CCH Operations Director, Mr

Washington Machiridza, Principal Tu-

tor Mrs Edith Chinhiwu, Deputy Ma-

tron Dorcas Chairuka, Senior Tutor

Mrs Alice Musakasa and the Public

Relations Officer Mrs Audrey Tasa-

ranarwo who accompanied the choir to

the celebrations were impressed by the

performance by the students whom

they commended for being well-

primed for the event.

“The performance by the

School of Nursing Choir showed that

they can do even better during the

graduation of nursing students some-

time later this year. The choir has

been doing well in the past at previ-

ous graduation ceremonies we have

held and one of such memorable out-

ings is when they thrilled at an event

that was also attended by the Air

Force Band,” noted Mrs Tasaranarwo.

Meanwhile, the theme for

this year’s WHO commemorations

focused on the key message of univer-

sal health coverage (UHC) for all by

the year 2030 with a special emphasis

on supporting civil society organisa-

tions, policy-makers, individuals and

the media in the journey to bring uni-

versal health coverage to every coun-

try and also ensure that the Sustaina-

ble Development Goals (SDGs)

which every country agreed to in

2015 are fulfilled.

This was said by WHO Re-

gional Director, Prebo Barango, who

noted the huge strides that the organi-

sation has made in the region in the

fight to combat HIV, with about 14

million people having access to anti-

retroviral therapy (ARVs), while dis-

eases like Malaria and Polio have also

been dealt with through sustained

efforts.

“Member states should make

sustained efforts in providing ade-

quate healthcare to their citizens and

workforce to enhance health for all by

living according to the promises en-

trenched in the SDG commitments

they made in 2015.

“It is encouraging to note

that since 2016 the region has not

recorded a single case of the polio

disease while nets have been distrib-

uted to prevent malaria and 14 million

people have access to HIV treatment

drugs,” he said.

Dr Gibson Mhlanga, who is

the Principal Director of Preven-

tiveServices in the MoHCC said: “As

the Ministry of Health and Child

CCH SCHOOL OF NURSING CHOIR IMPRESSES AT WHO 70 COMMEMORATION

we always work closely with

WHO and that is why you always

see us in full force every year

during their commemorations.

Zimbabwe stands in solidarity

with WHO to re-affirm the SDG

commitments,” he said.

The celebrations also

coincided with the launch of the

National Healthy Ageing Strate-

gy, which is a policy document

which calls for health issues to be

treated in a more holistic ap-

proach, from the bottom to the

top to include those are well ad-

vanced in their age who are said

to be a little under six percent of

the national population.

This was revealed by the

Chairperson of the Elder Persons

Board Mr Edwin Murwira in his

stirring speech on the virtues of

aging.

After the speeches, there

was the cake-cutting ceremony

which was emblazoned in the

logo and colour of the organisa-

tion and written, “WHO AT 70.”

Paul Chinakidzwa from

the MoHCC’s Public Relations

Office was the master-of-

ceremony.

CHITUNGWIZA CENTRAL

HOSPITAL student nurse Memory

Marowa scooped a gold medal at the

examinations which were sat in March

this year.

“I was happy to know that

one of our students scooped a gold

medal which means she is one of the

highest ranking in the country in the

examinations that were written in

March.

“I am also pleased with this

year's overall performance because

this shows that the pass rate among

our students has greatly improved.

The previous pass rate was 60% but

this time around it has increased to 96,

4%,” explained the Principal Tutor

Mrs Edith Chinhiwu.

Mrs Chinhiwu added that for

students to pass, it is a combined ef-

fort of both the School of Nursing

tutors and nursing staff in the clinical

area, coupled with the students’ zeal to

pass.

The nurse who scooped the

gold medal Memory Marowa, paid

tribute to the matrons, ward managers

and other nursing staff who always

believed in her academic capabilities

thus her potential to scoop a gold

medal.

“I was shocked to hear that I

scooped a gold medal because frankly

speaking, I least expected it. I there-

fore thank the Almighty for this great

achievement,” enthused Marowa.

She added: “I now believe in the faith

that my tutors put in capabilities to pass

with flying colours because they had

seen the potential in me. Another factor

that I think also contributed to my per-

formance was the experience that I

gained while working in the wards

nursing patients. I learnt a lot and man-

aged to put theory into practice during

my stint. I thank tutors, matrons, ward

managers and senior nurses who taught

me for a job well-done.”

She urged other student nurses

to work hard when taking care of pa-

tients, including referring to their notes

when they come across new conditions

and also to consult tutors and other

nursing staff whenever they need direc-

tion in their training and practice.

Marowa said she also appreci-

ates tutors and her classmates GB2015

for their support throughout the train-

ing.

One of the ward managers Mr

Samuel Chavhe described Marowa as a

very intelligent cadre, an attribute

which he said clearly contributed to her

excellent results.

“I always had confidence in

Marowa because I could see the poten-

tial and intelligence that was in her. She

did her management assessment in

ward 1 and passed with flying colours.

True to our expectation, she has earned

this gold medal and for that she has

done us proud,” said Mr Chavhe.

One of her group mates

remembers how Marowa was al-

ways top of her class.

Student nurse Tawanda

Manhando came second after

Marowa who said,”I would like to

encourage students to work hard,

read widely, team work and also

utilize the library. Above all I ad-

vise other students to be prayerful

and put God first in everything.”

Marowa is a mother of

three children who had to strive

hard in order to balance work,

school and family needs.

27 APRIL 2018 VOL 14 ISSUE 3

IT is indeed true that all good things

come to those who wait. And rosy

paths are walked by those with golden

hearts.

Such is the case with newly-weds

Nick Makgamatha, and his long-time

flame, Sherris, nee Moyo who recently

fulfilled their dream of becoming life-

time soul-mates after tying the note at

Mana resort in Harare on Saturday 21

April 2018 at a colourful ceremony

that was witnessed by a stellar convo-

cation of guests.

Theirs was indeed a typical romantic

tale with a happy storyline dating back

to the time when they first set eyes on

one another and later got up-close in

2013 when both of them were elected

to be on the Committee of the Wits

Res House at Wits University in South

Africa where they were students and,

as was predestined by their stars,

sparks naturally flew between them

following a few pleasantries that start-

ed with a mere greeting.

“It was in 2013 and we had both been

elected into the Wits Res Committee.

As was expected of us, we both partic-

ipated in the traditional meet and

greet. (Although I am convinced that

Sherry is the only person I greeted.)

Paths unplanned and unforeseen led us

to that very moment and that very

spot,” recalls Nick with teary eyes of

wonderment.

And no wonder that signaled the start

of a long but enjoyable road that

would lead to a petal-strewn podium

ushering them into bridal entry, light-

ing of candles, address by ecstatic in-

laws, exchange of vows and rings,

releasing of doves, moments of reflec-

tions by the close ones and the signing

of the register by the newly-weds.

With loud “I do, I do!” pronuncia-

tions, of course. And the marriage

officer was visibly thrilled to officiate

at the wedding ceremony of such a

tender young couple who were armin

arm as their hymns of choice that in-

iiincluded the golden tunes “Showers of

Blessings”, “How Great Thou Art”,

“You Are Faithful” and “To God Be

All the Glory” were piped.

This was apart from the vivacious drum

majorettes from Mberi Primary School

in Chitungwiza who illuminated the

ceremony with their scintillating act,

escorting the couple like mascots from

a romantic tale.

What with the immaculate fashion and

trendy vehicles that were on display on

the day, which also added colour and

flavor to the wedding affair!

And oh! The Air Force Band who

seemed to have landed from the clouds

with their brass instruments – they were

definitely out in full force belting out

love ballad after another for the love-

birds!

Spic and span were the in-laws, beam-

ing with proud smiles, and the charis-

matic Dr Obadiah Moyo, who is the

Chief Executive Officer of Chitungwiza

Central Hospital, was at his usual best,

playing the father-figure role for his

daughter Sherris and son-in-law Nick.

Such was the overflowing with oodles

of joy, pride and happiness.

In tow was the sociable Mrs Audrey

Tasaranarwo, CCH’s Public Relations

Officer, and some members of staff

from the same institution, who were out

to land unstinting support to their

“Igwe” and the brood of history-

makers.

A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

from the same institution, who

were out to land unstinting support

to their “Igwe” and the brood of

history-makers.

“The Moyo siblings are marvelous

to be around, and knowing them as

we do, they are not just good aca-

demics but also excellent in almost

everything that they do. Nick, by

choosing the hand of Sherris, has

set a good precedence not only to

his other siblings but other young-

sters of his age, especially those

who are still at college or pursuing

their studies.

“Books, coupled with the right path

to marriage, are the keys to success

in life since a good life-partner is a

God-sent pillar of support. By tying

the knot, the couple has lived up to

the Biblical tenets of marriage be-

ing a hallowed institution since a

good wife comes from God. There-

fore this union should be sanctified

as possible,” Mrs Tasaranarwo

enthused after the wedding.

After the ceremony, the guests in-

dulged in some delicious cocktails

and had time to mingle before

‘putting on’ their dancing shoes for

some nimble footwork on the

dance-floor in accompaniment to

sways by the newly-weds of Nick

and Sherris who had sworn their

vows of “I do, I do” to the delight

of the earth and the heavens.
