102 ESSENTIALS If you're in need of a bush break, then look no further than these lodges for a luxurious and tranquil back-to-nature experience GO WILD ESSENTIALS 103 WHY GO? Situated on the Namibian tip of the Zambezi Region, previously known as the Caprivi Strip, and with the iconic Chobe River as its setting, Chobe Water Villas offers a luxurious break in one of Africa's must-see wildlife destinations. With transfers, meals and a host of activities taken care of by the lodge, all guests have to do is relax in the tranquillity of the bush and enjoy spotting various animals and birds on the river banks and in the water. GAME VIEWING While you don’t have to go far to see hippo wallowing in water below your villa (or hear them at night feeding under the deck), one of the most memorable experiences the lodge offers is a river safari. The three to four-hour boat cruise lets you get close to the river’s wildlife, whether it’s the awe of some very big crocodiles who call the waters home, the magical sight of a herd of elephants coming down to drink, or a quick glimpse of a fish eagle swooping down on its prey. The lodge can also arrange a morning game drive into Chobe National Park, across the river and into Botswana. The park is home to Africa’s largest elephant population, so if you don’t get to see them from the water, you should be guaranteed a sighting from the open 4 x 4 vehicle, as well as appreciating some of nature’s smaller marvels, like the changing colours of a chameleon in the sand and jewel-coloured bee-eaters in flight. STAY IN STYLE With only 16 en-suite villas built on stilts in the water – and each featuring its own private deck and 180-degree view of the river – the lodge offers quiet seclusion. The interiors cleverly incorporate elements of nature, with no skimping on luxury, from the four-poster beds (with air-con and mosquito nets) to deep baths for an indulgent soak. On a hot day, cool off in the lodge's infinity pool overlooking the river, or watch the sun go down with a G&T on the main terrace before an evening fire is lit. FINE DINING If game viewing works up an appetite, you won’t be disappointed. All meals are included in your stay, and served in the restaurant or poolside. Start the day with a selection of fresh fruit and cheeses and preserves, or cooked eggs and toast. Lunch is a lighter affair, so you can leave room for a delicious high tea served later in the afternoon, before a three-course candle-lit dinner. VENTURE A LITTLE FURTHER If you’re in need of a little bit more adventure to your break, the lodge, for an added fee, can CHOBE WATER VILLAS arrange a day-trip to Victoria Falls (on the Zambian side) that includes a tour, lunch and visit to the craft market. Or take a cultural tour by boat to Kasenu Village, built around a baobab tree. GETTING THERE The Chobe Water Villas are a one-hour, 45-minute flight from Joburg, via SAA Airlink.
