Dear Friends,

CHOICE Humanitarian has been ending poverty for 30 years! We pride ourselves in knowing that WE END POVERTY across the globe. It is our work. It is our passion. It is our trademark. Since I joined CHOICE in 2009, I have witnessed people lift themselves out of poverty across five countries and hundreds of villages. While CHOICE ignites hopes and dreams, the villagers are those that create their own vision for self-reliance.

This report highlights our greatest accomplishments in 2011. Empowering villagers to create their own path out of poverty is our secret to success. Our track record over the past three decades showcases the effectiveness of our model, reflecting the leverage of every dollar donated while empowering villagers to lead their own sustainable efforts.

We believe in the value of every human being. Now is the time for us all to rally together—each and every one of us that share a common passion to end poverty! This is so important as there is still a great deal of work left to be done. Our mutual understanding must be that this is the time, and that together, with our entire global family, we are ready to take a stand and continue to end poverty. There is no reason why anyone today must figure out how to live with less than $2 a day. This realization should bring us to an agreement that this level of poverty can no longer be tolerated.

We are grateful to each of you for all that we have accomplished together. Without your friendship and support, none of this would have been possible. Together we have made huge strides in ending poverty. I call on you to continue your journey with CHOICE. Let us all put an end to extreme poverty once and for all.

Warm Regards,

Leah BarkerCEO

Part of the CHOICE model requires community leaders to train their counterparts in other communities on the Self-Developing Village Model, as well as knowledge of appropriate technologies.

Gregorio Zambrano Ramirez, from the Village of Tamaula, is teaching leaders in Garbanzo how to use ferro-cement application, typically used for water cisterns, to build a technology center.

This new center will introduce villagers to internet connectivity, thus opening a world of opportunities and resources. This new knowledge of ferro-cement will also help them address the most important need of the community: cisterns for storing water.

The children of Duradanda and surrounding communities once only dreamed that college would be a possibility for them.

CHOICE facilitated the collaboration between several funding sources and development partners that resulted in the construction of the first college in the Duradanda region.

Each dollar was leveraged fifteen times! No longer do 24,000 children just dream of going to college, but instead, these students can attend college and fulfill their full potential.

Mothers in Chirixquitzac spent hours each day fetching water for their young children. However, at the same time, these mothers watched their children suffer, and even die, from easily preventable waterborne diseases.

Since the construction of the new water system in Chirixquitzac, the infant mortality rate has been reduced to zero. Health has improved for all villagers and women now have extra time to devote to their children’s education, family gardening, and income-generating initiatives.

Families in Bolivia constantly struggled with the lack of clean water. The manual digging of 35-kilometer trenches was robbing these families of precious time they did not have.

All of this changed with the introduction of a simple trencher, a generous donation from a CHOICE corporate partner.

The use of this trencher has empowered women to seize opportunity and focus their newly found time on creating small business initiatives to support their families.

In the past, when Kenyan families milked their cows, they had no options for selling their excess milk. CHOICE mobilized the community to understand the importance of revitalizing an existing old dairy plant.

Now, an entire region has the opportunity to deliver all of its extra milk and receive fair market value, significantly increasing overall income for families.

The expedition program is a unique way for volunteers to become intimately involved with CHOICE and witness first-hand the impact we have across the globe. In 2011, we welcomed 207 participants into rural villages around the world to work side-by-side with villagers for an entire week! Villagers are excited to receive these volunteers—members of an extended global family—and are motivated by the willingness of others to travel such great distances to work alongside them in support of their goals. Through this experience, volunteers come to realize that the work of CHOICE builds people, not just projects.

It was hard to walk away from the village

and suddenly realize that I was going back

to my hectic life. My views had changed,

my heart had changed, and

board and staffDear Supporters,

This past June, I had the great opportunity to spend a week in the beautiful village of Chirixquitzac, Guatemala. This is the second trip I have made to Chirixquitzac since 2010. The progress the villagers have made is remarkable. When the village first sought out the help of CHOICE, Chirixquitzac was stuck in a rut. The villagers were, and are, capable people with a deep-rooted desire to take their village out of poverty. They just needed a little push to get started.

In our first trip to the village in June 2010, I was awed by the work ethic that the entire village demonstrated. We worked together on a project to provide running water to each of the 50+ huts scattered throughout the mountainous village. The villagers worked long, arduous hours carrying extraordinary amounts of weight upon their backs. In 2012, I was struck by not just the work ethic, but the leadership and organization that now accompanied that work ethic. The tangible results of that powerful combination were very clear as I observed the village-wide water system, a beautiful two-room schoolhouse, a paved road connecting the village to the outside world (creating immense business opportunities), and Lorena stoves creating a much healthier way to cook food and avoid smoke inhalation.

The less tangible, yet arguably more important, results that I saw were a belief in the value of teamwork, civic pride, and a knowledge that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

This is just one of the hundreds, if not thousands, of success stories taking place every day. The CHOICE method is working. Not just because of the projects that you can touch and feel, but because of the realization by tens of thousands of people that they can control and shape their own future.

Thanks to all of you who allow this realization to take place with your ongoing support of CHOICE Humanitarian.

Regards,

Rich IsraelsenBoard Chairman

CORPORATE PARTNER PROGRAM

$204,6509598

The Corporate Partner Program (CPP) is an opportunity to build a stronger community within companies and work together towards a common cause. Employees are invited to adopt a cause that unites them as a team. Through a generous paycheck deduction program, these same employees can support their chosen cause and solidify their company culture in the process. As a result, companies enhance their image with the community-at-large while showcasing their interest and responsibility to the world around them.

ending povertycollaborationsFunding poverty is a massive effort. To accomplish our goals, CHOICE creates strategic partnerships in order to leverage each dollar raised. Below are the partners that enhance our ability to convert one dollar into five dollars!

PHOTO: T. Linh’s work thrives.

FUND AID FOR VIETNAMCHOICE would like to recognize our longstanding partnership with T. Linh, founder of Fund Aid for Vietnam. Our relationship with Vietnam is unlike our operations in Bolivia, Guatemala, Mexico, Kenya, and Nepal in that Linh operates completely and independently of CHOICE. Nevertheless, we consider her an important and vital member of the CHOICE family. In the past, Linh has supported CHOICE expeditions in and around the city of Hue where she works. Hue is the capital city of Thua Thien – Hue Province, Vietnam. It was once the imperial capital of the Nguyen dynasty. Linh is passionate about improving the lives of Vietnam’s many orphaned and handicapped children and has devoted many years of service to these and other causes. Please join CHOICE in applauding and honoring the work, the successes, and the impact that Linh has had over the years in Vietnam.

FIRST HOPECecile Pelous founded First Hope in the 1990s to support fundraising for the orphanage she had established in Nepal. Cecile’s unique goals and methods of sustainable self-development for the numerous Nepalese orphans in her care came to the attention of CHOICE Humanitarian in 2005. In 2009, First Hope officially joined the CHOICE Humanitarian network. For years, Cecile has rescued multiple children from a future of illness, starvation, and slavery. As a result, these same individuals can now receive university-level education and career development assistance, allowing them to find jobs and build stable, happy families.

YEHU MICROFINANCE:Yehu Microfinance was born out of CHOICE Humanitarian in 1999 to empower poor entrepreneurs in Kenya with access to micro-loans. Since its inception, more than 26,000 people (90% of which are women) have borrowed over 1 million dollars in funds with a 96% payback rate. Thanks to this program, families have been able to start or expand small businesses to significantly increase their family’s income. Yehu (meaning “ours” in Swahili) is one of the few programs in the world that works in rural areas where banking institutions are not accessible to the people who need it most. We are proud of our association with Yehu and the power of the CHOICE model to ignite initiatives that end poverty!

together we are ending povertyCHOICE Humanitarian is a Utah-based non-profit organization with 30 years experience working with rural communities toward self-reliance. We work in Kenya, Nepal, Mexico, Bolivia, and Guatemala in villages that live on less than $2 a day. The CHOICE model maintains an integrated approach to ending poverty by focusing on five core areas: health, education, environment, culture, and economic development. We recognize that our organization only acts as a catalyst for change, developing strong local leadership which empowers communities to create their own vision out of poverty and become the authors of their own lives.

Much of the preparation of this publication was generously donated by a variety of CHOICE supporters and partners including photographs, design, and layout. We thank them for a beautiful effort! The printing of this publication was donated.
