Joshua was very straightforward that day at Shechem. He summoned all the leaders and presented them before God. He said to the people, “Choose this day whom you will serve…!” It was decision time. The children
of Israel were moving into the promised land. The lure of other gods was pulling upon the hearts of the people. Joshua put it on the line, “Choose this day whom you will serve” —Joshua 24:15.
Sunday, May 6 is Commitment Day for The Harvest Campaign. You have heard the explanation of the need –the case has been made for the importance of this task. You have wrapped the entire campaign in prayer seeking God’s guidance, as a congregation and as individuals. We have studied the scriptures that provide the framework for giving. We have talked together and shared our hearts on the meaning and value of the church. We heard life-changing stories from our members.
You have been asked to make an extravagant gift. Extravagant gifts have been defined as the largest gift you have ever made before; as a gift of such portion that it shapes the values of your life; and as a gift that honors God!
Now is the time! “Choose this day!” Sunday is a Holy Communion Day—one of the most sacred acts we do together as a congregation. Sunday, we will be combining communion with an-other sacred act that we do together—making a commitment of our own resources. You will be asked in Traditions to bring your commitment card to The Harvest Campaign with you and place it on the chancel rail as you kneel for communion!
What a way to dramatically respond to the “Choose this day” challenge!

3on3 Downtown Slam 2012On Saturday, May 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., First United Methodist Church will host the “Family Fun Zone” for the third annual Connect 3on3 Downtown Slam Basketball Tournament! This is a wonderful opportunity for us as a church to take our love of sports and servanthood out to our community. Our church responsibility this year is to provide an area where children can come and enjoy free inflatable jumps, sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, etc.. We need you to volunteer to assist in the “Family Fun Zone.” In the “Family Fun Zone”, you will assist in supervising the children at play and help distribute information about our church to the people in the zone (see paragraph below). We pray you will join us for this wonderful family event.
The Family Fun Zone at Government PlazaOn Saturday May 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., First United Methodist Church Tuscaloosa will be hosting the Family Fun Zone during the Connect 3on3 Basketball Tournament. This will be a wonderful day of activities for families from all over the city to bring their children and enjoy a day of “fair” type games. We will have inflatables for the kids to play on, crafts and fun activities for people of all ages. We will be passing out information about our church’s Children’s FirstKids Ministry at this event, as well as, highlighting this year’s Vacation Bible School. We hope to reach many children that are not involved in a local church via the Family Fun Zone.
We, as the church, have the opportunity to be involved in several different ways. You could sign up to play basketball and have a team; you could volunteer for the set-up team or volunteer in the Family Fun Zone area for a shift; or you could just bring your family out to the park that day and enjoy being a representative of the church to those around you. We hope to see you there on Saturday May 12, 2012. To register a team, please get a sign-up sheet out of the main church office or to volunteer please call Joshua Davis at 205.345.7261, ext. 52.

With a Song in My HeartWe all have a favorite song. Some of us have a list of favorite songs because it’s just too difficult to narrow it down to just one. A song can be important for so many reasons, but if you boil it down to one truth that is universal, it’s that this special song has a way of moving us, calming us, exciting us, bringing us to tears or bringing us to our feet. The song has power and connection to us.
Starting on May 20, the Adult Choir will be presenting a special offering in worship that has become a great favorite of our congregation – “Encore Music.” For six weeks, we will be offering some of the favorite anthems, hymns, solos, duets, and songs of the congregation. You, the congregation, get to choose. Find the hymn or anthem or special song that speaks to you.
The “Encore Music” Sundays have become a favorite for the choir too! As it happens, the music that speaks to the congregation is almost always our favorite too! Come visit the FUMCT website and fill out an “Encore” Survey at www.fumct.org/encore.
Faithfully, James Seay, Director of Music and Worship, [email protected]

Global Outreach:Kairos Prison MinistryKairos Prison Ministry conducted a 3 ½ day quick course in Christianity at Bibb Correctional Facility, Brent, AL on February 23, 2012. The weekend consisted of 52 “free world” people and 42 inmates. 13 of the “free world” people were from First United Methodist Church.
Kairos has two key goals that are important to the ministry and to the prison administration and security. First, the ministry works to change the hearts of inmates so that they become productive participants in a positive community while in prison…and good citizens when they leave prison. Second, the ministry seeks to have a positive impact on the violence level in the prison. The warden and chaplain help Kairos achieve these goals by selecting inmates who are leaders in the prison.
Kairos has a progressive plan of four spiritual encounters over the 3 ½ day weekend. On the opening Thursday night, the inmates have their first encounter with Kairos; on Friday, they have their second encounter with themselves; on Saturday, their third encounter is with Christ; wrapped up on Sunday with their final encounter with others.
Another Kairos weekend is planned for August 16, 2012. Team building meetings for that weekend will begin on Monday, July 23rd at 6:00pm in the Artos Classroom at FUMCT. If you are interested in seeing the Holy Spirit work at warp speed in the lives of men, come and be a part of the Kairos team.
For more information about Kairos Prison Ministry, contact: Alan C. Davis, [email protected] or 205.394.9722
church happenings church happeningsAlliance Student MinistryThis past month, our students have been busy as the hands and feet of Christ, serving their church and community. We have enjoyed tremendous fellowship and received the blessing of being a part of some-thing bigger than ourselves.
In late March, we had one of our Workship weekends. On Friday night, students came to the church to enjoy dinner, music and games. On Saturday, we spent all day working on a house in Alberta City alongside Josh Davis and his team from Camp Coker. The amazing thing was that our “work day” attendance more than doubled our Friday night attendance! Our students obviously have a great understanding of what love in action looks like.
The weekend before Easter we assisted the FirstKids Children’s Ministry in hiding eggs for the annual Eas-ter egg hunt at Capital Park. The students also played games with the children before and after the hunt.
On April 15, our 7-12 grade students took a night off from their small groups to assist Josh and his staff in serving at The Harvest Capital Campaign Thanksgiv-ing Dinner. It was a great opportunity for these small groups to grow together in service.
We are proud of our students and their heart for mis-sion work. Their hearts inspire us and we hope they inspire you to. Some of our students are taking their mission work to the next level and going on an inter-national mission trip to Jamaica! Please be in prayer for them as they embark on an exciting and fullfilling time in their lives.
Our students have been hosting a lot of fundraisers to help with their trip costs, but our biggest fundrais-er is just on the horizon. We are having a Mother’s Day Flower Sale and the flowers will be decorat-ing the worship services on May 13. Families will get to take their flowers home with them. You will be hearing more about this opportunity soon to help our students.
Bryan Geer, Director of Student [email protected]
The Center of Greatness is ServiceJoin us and other members of our church who volunteer in our elementary schools. Once a week for one hour a day, you can enrich the life of a child by helping them in math or reading at MLK or Central Elementary Schools. Many testify that while their original intent is to give help and bless a child, to their amazement, they become the recipients of much more than they give. Not only do we get to meet new and exciting people of all ages, but we can guarantee that you will be blessed.
For more information about volunteering in our community’s elementary schools, contact: Sandra Hicks, 205.345.0318 or [email protected], Freddie Bruner, 205.462.0222 or [email protected]

United Methodist WomenAt the Arts, Baked Goods, and Craft (ABC) Fair, the United Methodist Women made $1,706. These funds will be distributed to local non-profit agencies. Thank you to Jim DeFord and the Cooking for Christ team that smoked al-most 100 chickens. A big THANK YOU to all the people who purchased items from our sale.
March 25 was United Methodist Women’s Day at FUMCT. That Sunday, 35 United Methodist Women participat-ed in the four church services that were held. This included the two Bridge services and the two Traditions services at which they talked about UMW, read the scripture, and said the offertory prayer. At the Traditional Services UMW members presented the Children’s Minutes and served as Hosts/Greeters. Reverend Kay Quinn Mutert spoke on UMW Day during the Sunday School Hour. Because March 25 is Annuncia-tion Day, Dr. Mutert talked about Mary and the role of women in the church as well as her experiences during her first year as an ordained Methodist minister while serving a circuit of churches in England.
