Who is Making Your Dog’s Shampoo?
You put a VERY high level of trust in the manufacturer of your dog’s shampoo
You trust that they will not use ingredients that may cause health issues in your dog Many dog shampoos on the market contain ingredients that are NOT safe
No Regula)ons in Pet Industry for Grooming Products
There are no regula.ons in the pet industry for grooming products. Some dog shampoo labels list NO ingredients Some labels are vague (may say “proprietary blend…”)
Never trust a manufacturer who
won’t disclose ingredients!
“Natural” = More Money for Manufacturers
ONLY cer)fied organic products ARE natural All other dog shampoos are “greenwashing”
Marke.ng their product as natural when they are NOT
Consumers wants “natural” and are willing to pay more for a product labeled as natural The consumer assumes natural = safe & non-‐toxic & doesn’t always read ingredients
The word “natural” on a label means nothing unless the product is cer.fied organic
What is Organic?
A few organic ingredients mixed in with toxic ingredients does not make a product “natural” or “organic”. It makes a product that was a bad decision to manufacture:
Wasteful to mix cer.fied organic ingredients with toxic ingredients Confusing to the consumer
Ingredient Standards
Cer.fied organic products must disclose 100% of ingredients at the .me of cer.fica.on. Ingredients must comply with federal USDA organic standards. No GMO (gene.cally modified) ingredients are allowed. Strict standards for growing, storage, processing, packaging, & shipping!
There are no regula.ons in the pet industry for what has to be listed on the label and no review of the ingredient lifecycle (growing/processing/packaging/shipping). Only dog shampoo that make medical claims need to register with the EPA and follow regulatory/labeling guidelines.

Cleaning Agents
Saponified organic oils -‐ the highest grade that is available • No GMO • No pes.cides • No herbicides • No ar.ficial colors • No ar.ficial fragrance
Typically sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. Both are known skin irritants. Both are o\en contaminated with byproducts of the manufacturing process. These byproducts are known carcinogens, have effects on the nervous system, liver, and kidneys. They also pollute the environment through wastewater.

Thickening Agents
Guar gum or xanthan gum can be used as a thickening agent. However, it will reduce lathering in the product. Consumers equate lathering with ability to clean so thickeners are not used frequently.
Ethanolamines are o\en used to boost foaming and create a thicker creamy texture. They also break down and form nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic, have reproduc.ve toxicity, developmental toxicity, and organ system toxicity.

Fragrance
Essen.al oils are added to the product to give the fragrance and as an added bonus, the natural beneficial proper.es of the essen.al oils are in the final product. For example, lavender essen.al oil is o\en used for lavender fragrance. It also helps with dry and itchy skin when used in a dog shampoo.
Synthe.c fragrance can originate from hundreds to thousands of separate ingredients. None of the ingredients have to be listed on the label. Some synthe.c ingredients have been linked to serious health problems like cancer and reproduc.ve and developmental toxicity.

Color
There are natural color dyes that can be used in organic products but, they are expensive, pH and temperature sensi.ve, shelf life unstable, weaker in strength, & sensi.ve to light. Typically, the color of the product is dictated by the ingredients selected for their beneficial proper.es. For example, hemp oil is a beau.ful green due to the high level of chlorophyll. You add hemp oil for its excellent moisturizing proper.es. Your product will likely have a green color – but you added hemp as a moisturizer, not because it is green.
Typically FD&C or D&C synthe.c colors synthesized from petroleum. Many of the synthe.c dyes raise concerns that range from organ damage, cancer, birth defects, and allergic reac.ons. Synthe.c dyes are not pure chemicals and o\en have impuri.es (byproducts) that may be toxic.

Preserva)ves
Use natural an.oxidants to keep oils from going rancid and essen.al oils for an.-‐microbal and an.-‐fungal proper.es. • Rosemary extract • Grapefruit seed extract • Vitamin E Deriva.ve called
Tocopherol
Use one of 4 types: • Formaldehyde releasers • Isothiazolinones • Sodium Benzoate • Parabens
All of these preserva.ves have been linked to some health issues that range from allergies to cancer, organ system toxicity, neurotoxicity, leukemia, and other blood disorders.

Perspec)ve
• Nearly 50% of dogs die from cancer • Studies es.mate that approximately 5% of these cancers are hereditary (rates vary by breed)
• The remaining 95% of dog cancers are due to lifestyle and environmental factors like grooming products, food, etc.
