EDVARD H. GRIEG [composer/pianist]. Bergen, Norway, 1843-1907. The preeminent Norwe- gian nationalist composer, Grieg made his debut as a concert pianist in 1861. He worked for a period with Liszt and met most of the pro- minent composers of the period, including Tschaikowsky. His music for the premiere of Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt was composed at the request of the author. Grieg made nine exceedingly rare G&Ts in Paris, 1904, which are among the great recorded piano rarities, along with those of Saint-Saëns, Pugno and Debussy.

RAOUL PUGNO [pianist]. Montrouge, 1852-Moscow, 1914. Studying first at the École Niedermeyer and then with Mathias at the Paris Conservatory (1866-1869), he was regarded as one of the great pianists of his time. His debut had been in 1858 at the age of six, and he was encouraged by a father who wanted him to be a musician. Pugno toured internationally, both as a soloist and at one point with the Belgian violinist Eugen Ysayë. Despite his grand size, his touch, stated Harold Schonberg, “was light and his technique was incredibly flexible”. Musical commentator Wilson Lyle refers to “the delicacy, fire and power of his playing”. His pupils included composer and pianist Nadia Boulanger, André Benoist, Ernst Levy and Germaine Schnitzer, among many others. His only records, 1903 G&Ts, are exceptional rarities.

A gifted pupil of Conrad Ansorge (piano) and Max Bruch (com- position, Simon received his Ph.D. in Munich, 1904, and from 1907-1919 taught in the Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin. He was also active throughout his life as a solo re- citalist and a chamber music player, as well as a composer of solo vocal and choral music in particular, although he wrote an opera (per- formed once) and several well received instru- mental pieces which included a cello sonata (Op. 9). He was interred in the “model” Theresienstadt Prison Camp and while there performed, composed and lectured. In October of 1944 he was transported to Auschwitz and was murdered in a gas chamber. -Internet

Varèse, in his autobiography, recalled some of the composers who participated in this recording. “Carlos Salzedo, the great harpist, played the thematically important Chinese blocks. Paul Creston was at the anvils, Wallingford Riegger rubbed the güiro. Henry Cowell pounded tone-clusters on the piano keyboard. William Schumann, then a mere youngster, pulled the cord of the lion’s roar.” Varèse was in charge of the sirens. Few lightest mks., cons. 2. $15.00.

CHARLES GILBERT SPROSS [pianist/composer]. Poughkeepsie, NY, 1874-1961. Dr. Spross (awarded an Honorary Doctorate), a pupil of Xavier Scharwenka, was a noted soloist and accompanist who played for numerous singers such as Anna Case (in a tour of the U.S. and Hawaii), Lillian Nordica, Lucrezia Bori, Frieda Hempel, Beniamino Gigli, Emmy Destinn, Johanna Gadski and dozens of others, as well as some noted instrumentalists. He was also a composer whose songs were in the repertoire of many singers of the period. A number were recorded, such as Yesterday and Today (Dan Beddoe), Will-o-the Wisp (Gluck, acc. by Spross; Hinkle, DiPasquale, De Cisneros, etc.) and Gunga Din. As a very young (14-15) collector, I corresponded with Dr. Spross for a year or so. As he was associated with most singers active in the 1900-1940 period, I would ask him, basically, “whatever became of …” queries mixed with occasional questions about his career, including people whom he accompanied. Of Caruso, he commented that he had played for his first public performance of a song in English, The Lost Chord, featured at a Metropolitan Opera Sunday night concert in 1912. This correspondence continued until he asked if I were a concert manager. When I replied that I was a sophomore in high school the letters came to an abrupt end!

EDGAR A. GUEST [poet]. Birmingham, England, 1881-Detroit, MI, 1959. His family settled in Detroit in 1891 where, in 1895, young Guest began an association of sixty years with the Detroit Free Press. He was first a copy boy and eventually a syndicated columnist to 30 news- papers throughout the country. He authored over twenty volumes of poetry and was known as “the poet of the people”, a result of the sentimentality and direct connection to everyday lives and experiences that his “folksy verse” reflected. 3305. 10” Blue acous. He created the role of Dick Johnson/Ramerrez in the 1905 premiere of David Belasco’s The Girl of the Golden West. Perhaps his greatest success was the 1909 production of Porter Emerson Browne’s A Fool There Was. He retired in 1918 and thereafter was a frequent first-night audience member, noted for “the immaculateness with which he dressed” and creating “a striking and handsome figure, an invariable white carnation in his buttonhole matching the silver whiteness of his hair”.

JOSEPH NATUS [singer] 3296. 10” Blk. Victor Monarch (with Dog) 1114. DAY BY DAY (Stanford … no, not from

Godspell! ). Announced. 1901 recording. Slight edginess clears up as the playback progresses, otherwise plays cleanly. 3-4. $12.00.

POLA NEGRI [film actress]. Janova, Poland, 1894-San Antonio, TX, 1987. Negri was raised in dire poverty by her mother after her father had been sent by the Russians to a Siberian prison camp. She auditioned for the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet and was accepted, but her dancing career ended after she contracted tuberculosis. She then auditioned for the Warsaw Imperial Academy of Dramatic Arts and became a successful stage actress. World War I inter- vened, and she turned to films and became an international star. An affair with Rudolf Valentino ended with the actor’s death in 1926. At the funeral she created a memorable scene, tossing her- self on his casket, fainting (twice, the second time for photographers who missed it the first), and presenting a huge floral display reading “P-O-L-A”. Her career in the U.S. diminished when talkies came in, but she became a big hit in Nazi Germany. Despite Hitler’s admiration for her (he had given her full Aryan status when she was being investigated for Jewish ancestry) she refused the addition of propaganda to her films and left Germany for France in 1938. After Germany invaded France, she came to the U.S. and in 1951 became an American citizen. Her final film was a featured role in Walt Disney’s The Moon-Spinners (1964). Despite the fact that it was claimed she led the remainder of her life in seclusion, she was a visible resident of San Antonio and participant in its cultural activities. During her final illness, she was seen by “a handsome young doctor who looked at her chart, and failed to respond immediately in seeing her name.” The 92 year old Negri “reputedly pulled herself up into a ‘movie star’ pose and asked: ‘You don’t know who I am?!?!?’ ”

3710. 10” Blk. Orth. Victor V-73 [OB647-II/OB649-I]. BLACK EYES / FAREWELL, MY GYPSY CAMP (Russian Songs). These takes appear to differ from those used in the French issue. Small lbl. stkrs., otherwise just about 1-2 (i.e. as new). $15.00.

ADA REHAN [actress]. County Limerick, Ireland, 1860-New York City, 1916. She was born as Delia Crehan and was brought to the United States at about the age of six years. Misbilled as Ada C. Rehan in an early performance, the name stuck. Her acting career began early with some minor parts as a child, then her activities increased in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Mrs. Drew's theatre from 1873 to 1875. Subsequently, she appeared in Baltimore, Albany, and other cities with John W. Albaugh's company. When Augustin Daly opened his New York theatre in 1879, she joined his company, and continued to work with Daly until his death twenty years later. Ada Rehan was widely admired in Europe, having acted in Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, London, Edin- burgh, Dublin, and Stratford-on-Avon. She retired from the stage in 1906 and made New York City her home until her death there in 1916. 3197. 10” PW Green SS IRCC 5000. TAMING OF THE SHREW: Why, sir, I trust I may

Count LEO TOLSTOI [author/speaker]. Tula Province, Russia, 1828-Astapovo, Russia, 1910. Born on his family’s estate of Yasnaya Polyana, Leo was the youngest of four sons. After the premature death of his parents he was raised by an aunt, and upon her death in 1840 by another aunt. He was educated at home by German and French tutors. Entering Kazan University, planning on a diplomatic career, he studied Oriental languages and then law, but left the University in 1847 without completing a degree. He began writing after joining the army as what was known as a “gentleman-volunteer”. In 1852 a semi-autobiographical sketch was published by the leading literary journal of the day. It met with great success and led to his extra- ordinary career. His War and Peace “created a fantastic out-pouring of popular and critical reaction” and repre- sents “a high point in the history of world literature”. His second masterwork was Anna Karenina.
