WELCOME

Please stand as you are able as we join together to sing the introit hymn: All people

that on earth do dwell (NEH 334: Old Hundreth)

All people that on earth do dwell,

Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;

Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell,

Come ye before him, and rejoice.

The Lord, ye know, is God indeed,

Without our aid he did us make;

We are his folk, he doth us feed,

And for his sheep he doth us take.

3

O enter then his gates with praise,

Approach with joy his courts unto;

Praise, laud, and bless his name always,

For it is seemly so to do.

For why? the Lord our God is good:

His mercy is for ever sure;

His truth at all times firmly stood,

And shall from age to age endure.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

The God whom heaven and earth adore,

From men and from the Angel-host

Be praise and glory evermore. Amen.

Please remain standing as able.

Let us walk in the ways of justice, peace and love, faithfully serving

God in all that we do.

Grace and Peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus

Christ. Amen

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires

known and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse the

thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your

holy Name. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Brothers and Sisters, God is love

and we are God’s children.

There is no room for fear in love.

We love because God loved us first.

In the knowledge of that love,

let us confess our sins in penitence and faith.

ALL Sit or KNEEL

Silence

God our Father, we confess to you

and to our fellow members in the Body of Christ

4

that we have sinned in thought, word and deed,

and in what we have failed to do.

We are truly sorry.

Forgive us our sins,

and deliver us from the power of evil,

for the sake of your Son who died for us,

Jesus Christ, our Lord.

God, who is both power and love,

Forgive us and free us from our sins,

heal and strengthen us by God’s Holy Spirit,

and raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Please remain sitting/ kneeling as the choir sings the Kyrie.

Lord have mercy Lord have mercy

Christ have mercy Christ have mercy

Lord have mercy Lord have mercy

Please Stand as you are able as the choirs sing the Gloria

Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to God’s people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,

we worship you,

we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One

you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Then the special prayer (the Collect) for the day.

Let us pray (a brief silence follows)

5

Almighty and merciful God: in your goodness keep from us all that is

harmful; that, being ready both in body and soul, we may freely

accomplish your will; through Jesus Christ, our Lord who lives and

reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world

without end. Amen.

Please SIT for the readings

FIRST READING.

A reading from Job (Job 38: 1-7 )

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:

2 ‘Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Gird up your loins like a man,

I will question you, and you shall declare to me. 4 ‘Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?

Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements—surely you know!

Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk,

or who laid its cornerstone 7 when the morning stars sang together

and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The choir will sing Psalm 104 (1-10), to which you are invited to join in singing if you

wish.

6

SECOND READING

A reading from the letter of the Hebrews (Hebrews 5: 1-10 )

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of

things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices

for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward,

since he himself is subject to weakness; 3 and because of this he must

offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the

people. 4 And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it

7

only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not

glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the

one who said to him,

‘You are my Son,

today I have begotten you’;

6 as he says also in another place,

‘You are a priest for ever,

according to the order of Melchizedek.’

7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications,

with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from

death, and he was heard because of his reverent

submission. 8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through

what he suffered; 9 and having been made perfect, he became the

source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10 having been

designated by God a high priest according to the order of

Melchizedek.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Please stand as you are able as we join together to sing the Gradual Hymn: Dear

Lord and Father of mankind (NEH 353)

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,

Forgive our foolish ways!

Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,

In purer lives thy service find,

In deeper reverence praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard,

Beside the Syrian sea,

The gracious calling of the Lord,

Let us, like them, without a word

Rise up and follow thee.

8

O Sabbath rest by Galilee!

O calm of hills above,

Where Jesus knelt to share with thee

The silence of eternity,

Interpreted by love!

Drop thy still dews of quietness,

Till all our strivings cease;

Take from our souls the strain and stress,

And let our ordered lives confess

The beauty of thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire

Thy coolness and thy balm;

Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;

Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,

O still small voice of calm!

GOSPEL

The Lord be with you and also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark

Glory to Christ our Saviour. (Mark 10: 17-31)

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said

to him, ‘Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of

you.’ 36 And he said to them, ‘What is it you want me to do for

you?’ 37 And they said to him, ‘Grant us to sit, one at your right hand

and one at your left, in your glory.’ 38 But Jesus said to them, ‘You do

not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I

drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized

with?’ 39 They replied, ‘We are able.’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘The

cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am

baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my

left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been

prepared.’ 41 When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with

James and John. 42 So Jesus called them and said to them, ‘You know

that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers

9

lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But

it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among

you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among

you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served

but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.’

Give thanks to the Lord for his glorious Gospel. Praise to Christ our Lord.

Please sit for

The SERMON

Brothers and Sisters let us now affirm our faith together in the words of the Nicene

Creed. Please stand as you are able, as we say together the Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one substance with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and was made human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father.

10

With the Father and the Son, he is worshipped and

glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness

of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

As we come before our loving God let us offer up our prayers of intercessions.

Please sit or kneel for the INTERCESSIONS, we pray for the church and the world

giving thanks for God’s goodness.

Please stand as you are able to for the Peace.

God’s grace and goodness go with you and give you his peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you

We meet in Christ’s Name.

Let us share his peace.

and all may exchange a (social distanced) sign of

Christ’s peace

We now join together to sing hymn: Lord of beauty, thine the splendour (NEH 265:

Regent Square)

Lord of beauty, thine the splendour

Shown in earth and sky and sea,

Burning sun and moonlight tender,

Hill and river, flower and tree:

Lest we fail our praise to render

Touch our eyes that they may see.

Lord of wisdom, whom obeying

Mighty waters ebb and flow,

While unhasting, undelaying,

Planets on their courses go:

In thy laws thyself displaying,

Teach our minds thyself to know.

11

Lord of life, alone sustaining

All below and all above,

Lord of love, by whose ordaining

Sun and stars sublimely move:

In our earthly spirits reigning,

Lift our hearts that we may love.

Lord of beauty, bid us own thee,

Lord of truth, our footsteps guide,

Till as Love our hearts enthrone thee,

And, with vision purified,

Lord of all, when all have known thee,

Thou in all art glorified.

In preparation for the Eucharistic Prayer please remain standing as you are able

The Eucharistic Prayer

Let us present our offerings to the Lord.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory,

the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in

heaven and on earth is yours.

All things come from you, and of your own we give you.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God,

It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Worship and praise belong to you, Father,

in every place and at all times.

All power is yours.

You created the heavens and established the earth;

you sustain in being all that is.

In Christ your Son our life and yours are brought together

in a wonderful exchange.

12

He made his home among us that we

might for ever dwell in you.

Through your Holy Spirit

you call us to new birth

in a creation restored by love.

As children of your redeeming purpose ...

we offer you our praise,

with angels and archangels

and the whole company of heaven,

singing the hymn of your unending glory:

Choir: Holy, holy, holy Lord

God of power and might.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

It is customary to sit or kneel at this point in the Eucharistic Prayer

Glory and thanksgiving be to you,

most loving Father,

for the gift of your Son born in human flesh

He is the Word existing beyond time,

both source and final purpose,

bringing to wholeness all that is made.

Obedient to your will he died upon the Cross.

By your power you raised him from the dead.

He broke the bonds of evil

and set your people free

to be his Body in the world

On the night when he was given up to death,

knowing that his hour had come, having loved his own,

he loved them to the end.

At supper with his disciples

he took bread and offered you thanks.

13

He broke the bread,

and gave it to them, saying:

"Take, eat.

This is my Body: it is broken for you."

After supper, he took the cup,

he offered you thanks,

and gave it to them saying:

"Drink this, all of you.

This is my Blood of the new covenant;

it is poured out for you, and for all,

that sins may be forgiven.

Do this in remembrance of me."

We now obey your Son's command

We recall his blessed passion and death,

his glorious resurrection and ascension;

and we look for the coming of his Kingdom.

Made one with him, we offer you these gifts

and with them ourselves

a single, holy living sacrifice.

Hear us, most merciful God,

and send your Holy Spirit upon us

and upon this bread and this wine,

that, overshadowed by his life-giving power,

they may be the Body and Blood of your Son,

and we may be kindled with the fire of your love

and renewed for the service of your Kingdom.

Help us, who are baptised into the fellowship of Christ's Body

to live and work to your praise and glory;

may we grow together in unity and love

until at last, in your new creation,

we enter into our heritage

in the company of the Virgin Mary,

the apostles, and prophets,

and of all our brothers and sisters living and departed.

14

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,

with whom, and in whom,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory be to you,

Lord of all ages, world without end. Amen.

The Living Bread is broken for the life of the world

Lord, unite us in this sign.

As our Saviour Christ has commanded and taught us we are bold to

say, in whatever language is most familiar to you

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our

trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Agnus Dei

Choir: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us

peace.

All are warmly welcome to come forward for communion or a blessing.

Please pause to receive communion into your hearts and/or hands.

During Communion the Choir will sing the Anthem

Give almes of thy goods,

and turn never thy face from any poor man,

and then the face of the Lord

shall not be turned away from thee.

After communion:

Give thanks to the Lord for he is gracious

and his mercy endures for ever

15

Almighty God, may we who have been strengthened by this eucharist

remain in your steadfast love, and show in our lives the saving mystery

that we celebrate. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord

Amen.

Father, your steadfast purpose is the completion of all things

in your Son. May we who have received the pledges of the

kingdom, live by faith, walk in hope and be renewed in love,

until the world reflects your glory and you are all in all;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Any notices are offered.

Please stand as you are able to receive the blessing.

The BLESSING:

The Lord be with you.

and also with you.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts

and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus

Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the

Son and the Holy Spirit, remain with you and those whom you love,

now and always. Amen

We now join together to sing our final hymn: Now thank we all our God

(NEH 413: Nun Danket)

Now thank we all our God,

With heart and hands and voices,

Who wondrous things hath done,

In whom his world rejoices;

Who from our mother's arms

Hath blessed us on our way

With countless gifts of love,

And still is ours to-day.

16

O may this bounteous God

Through all our life be near us,

With ever joyful hearts

And blessèd peace to cheer us;

And keep us in his grace,

And guide us when perplexed,

And free us from all ills

In this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God

The Father now be given,

The Son, and him who reigns

With them in highest heaven,

The One eternal God,

Whom earth and heaven adore;

For thus it was, is now,

And shall be evermore. Amen.

Dismissal

Brothers and Sisters go in peace to love and to serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen
