Welcome and Introduction – The Provost

Processional Hymn

Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, And publish abroad his wonderful name: The name all-victorious of Jesus extol: His kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.

God ruleth on high, almighty to save; And still he is nigh, his presence we have: The great congregation his triumph shall sing, Ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.

Salvation to God who sits on the throne! Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son: The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, Fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.

Then let us adore, and give him his right: All glory and power, all wisdom and might, All honour and blessing, with angels above, And thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.

The choir sings the Introit:

Ecce sacerdos by Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)

Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God. Therefore, by an oath, the Lord made him increase among his people. He gave him the blessing of all nations, and confirmed his covenant upon his head.

Opening Sentence – The Provost

Please sit or kneel for the Confession:

Precentor: We confess…

All: We confess to God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, through our own grievous fault. Wherefore we pray God to have mercy upon us.

Almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us all our sins and deliver us from evil, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to life everlasting. Amen.

Bishop: May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and remission of all your sins, time for true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen.

The choir sing the Preces and Responses (Music by Martin Neary):

Precentor: O Lord, open thou our lips; Choir: And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. Precentor: O God, make speed to save us; Choir: O Lord, make haste to help us.

Please stand.

Precentor: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost;

Choir: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

Precentor: Praise ye the Lord; Choir: The Lord’s name be praised.

Please sit.

The choir sings Psalm 150, Chant by Charles Villiers Stanford:

3 Praise him in the sound of the trumpet : praise him upon the lute and harp.

Old Testament Reading

Wisdom 3.1-9 read by John Whittall, Honorary Diocesan Secretary

But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure was taken for misery: And their going away from us, for utter destruction: but they are in peace. And though in the sight of men they suffered torments, their hope is full of immortality. Afflicted in few things, in many they shall be well rewarded: because God hath tried them, and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace he hath proved them, and as a victim of a holocaust he hath received them, and in time there shall be respect had to them. The just shall shine, and shall run to and fro like sparks among the reeds. They shall judge nations, and rule over people, and their Lord shall reign for ever. They that trust in him, shall understand the truth: and they that are faithful in love shall rest in him: for grace and peace is to his elect.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

The choir sings the Magnificat (Music: Evening Service in C by Charles Villiers Stanford):

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him, throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He rememb’ring his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Please stand for the Gloria.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

Please sit.

New Testament Reading

Revelation 19.1, 4-10 read by Graham Robertson, Diocesan Chancellor

And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come,

and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

The choir sings the Nunc dimittis (Music: Evening Service in C by Charles Villiers Stanford):

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation : Which thou hast prepared before the face of all People : A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Please stand for the Gloria.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

The Apostle’s Creed

Precentor: I believe…

All: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven,

And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.

The choir sings the Responses (Music by Martin Neary):

Precentor: The Lord be with you; Choir: And with thy spirit. Precentor: Let us pray.

Please sit or kneel.

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, In earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Precentor: O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us; Choir: And grant us thy salvation. Precentor: O Lord, save the Queen; Choir: And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Precentor: Endue thy ministers with righteousness; Choir: And make thy chosen people joyful. Precentor: O Lord, save thy people; Choir: And bless thine inheritance.

Precentor: Give peace in our time, O Lord; Choir: Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only

thou, O God. Precentor: O God, make clean our hearts within us; Choir: And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Precentor: Let us pray.

Collect for the Day

O Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys which thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Second Collect at Evening Prayer

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

The Third Collect, for Aid Against all Perils

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Please sit.

The choir sings the Anthem:

O how glorious is the kingdom by Basil Harwood (1859-1949)

O how glorious is the kingdom in which all the saints rejoice with Christ. Clothed with white robes, they follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.

Intercessions – The Rev’d Canon Lisa Eunson

Sermon – The Rt Rev’d Dr Robert Gillies

The Blessing

The Bishop, after his final blessing, steps forward from the Altar and faces the Altar and hands the Cathedral’s Crozier, the symbol of his authority as Bishop of the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney, over to the Provost with the

following words:

Bishop: Provost, at my consecration as Bishop I was handed the Cathedral’s Crozier thus signalling the authority I accepted as Bishop, under God, to serve the churches, the people and the wider communities within the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney.

I now hand this crozier to you and ask that it be kept in a safe place until the moment when, as I did, it is handed to my successor.

Provost: On behalf of the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney I receive this crozier and will do as you request. To God be the glory.

All: Amen. To God be the glory.

Please stand for the Final Hymn during which a collection will be taken:

The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;

She is his new creation By water and the word:

From heaven he came and sought her To be his holy Bride;

With his own blood he bought her, And for her life he died.

Elect from every nation, Yet one o’er all the earth,

Her charter of salvation One Lord, one faith, one birth;

One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses With every grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder Men see her sore opprest,

By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distrest,

Yet saints their watch are keeping, Their cry goes up, ‘How long?’

And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song.

‘Mid toil, and tribulation, And tumult of her war,

She waits the consummation Of peace for evermore,

Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest,

And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union With God the Three in One,

And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won:

O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we

Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with thee.

Please remain standing for the Procession.
