The Father Revealed in the Son

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Hymn

Before I take the body of my Lord, before I share his life in bread and wine,I recognise the sorry things within:these I lay down.

The words of hope I often failed to give, the prayers of kindness buried in my pride, the signs of care I argued out of sight:these I lay down.

The narrowness of vision and of mind, the need for other folk to serve my will, and every word and silence meant to hurt:these I lay down.

Of those around in whom I meet my Lord,I ask their pardon, and I grant them mine, that every contradiction of Christ’s peacemight be laid down.

Communion Prayer

We come to the Lord’s Supper togetheras children of our one God.Jesus makes the guest list, not us.Our family, chosen by God,is gathered from west and east, and includes everyone, even the lowest and the least.Jesus revealed himself to his disciplesin the breaking of bread around a table.May we see the face of God today as we share in the Lord’s Supper.

On the night he was handed over, the night before he was crucified,Jesus gathered with his friends for a meal.He took the bread, and after blessing it,he broke it, saying, “This is my body, which is broken for you.As often as you eat it, remember me.”

all: break the bread

Please pray with me:Jesus, as we take this bread, let it be a sign of all you did for us,and who you are for us.Thank you for this bread of life.

all: eat the bread

After sharing the bread, Jesus took a cup of wine, and gave it to them to drink, saying,“This is my blood of the new covenant which is poured out for many.”

all: hold up the cup

Let us pray:Jesus, as we drink this cup,let it be a sign for us of all you did for us,and who you are for us.Thank you that you bring us peace that passes understanding.

all: drink from the cup

Jesus, through your death and resurrection you reconciled the world to God, and through your example you have shown us a way to peace.Give us strength as the people of God

to be channels of peace in the world, speaking your peace, living your peace, fighting for the justice from which peace will flow, and always longing to sense that we are living in your Kingdom as we walk together with you. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn

I come with joy to meet my Lord, forgiven, loved and free,in awe and wonder to recallhis life laid down for me.

I come with Christians far and nearto find, as all are fed,the new community of lovein Christ’s communion bread.

As Christ breaks bread and bids us shareeach proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one,and strangers now are friends.

And thus with joy we meet our Lord, his presence, always near, is in such friendship better known:we see, and praise him here.

Together met, together bound,we’ll go our different ways, and as his people in the worldwe’ll live and speak his praise.
