The monthly board meetings are normally scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM. The next meeting will be on June 11th at Bob & Rita DePaola’s house. If you would like to be a part of the meeting or just want to attend, please give any board member a call and we will make sure there is room for you. All members are always invited and are encouraged to attend the board meetings.

The summer is upon us and we have some fantastic events planned. Of Course we are starting out with the CTCI International Convention. This year it is being held in Branson Missouri. Then we move over to July which is chock full of events. First and foremost comes the Lake Forrest 4th of July Parade, then on the same day we proceed to the presidents house for an old fashioned Bar-B-Que. July 11th brings us to an event which will be held all over the USA. It is Classic Car Apparition Day. All you need to do is dust off your Thunderbird (if you didn’t for the parade) and drive it around town for all to see. That’s it! That’s all there is to it. We will be participating in a great fund raiser at South Bay Ford, Lincoln Mercury in Hawthorn. It is to raise funds to support Noah’s Bark Pet Rescue.
In August we have several items on the menu for you to participate in, but I will save that for next time. I’ll see you on the road with my top down.
Welcome to a new year and another month in the Sunshine Corner! Congratulations to all who stayed healthy this month. We want to wish all members that are under the weather and/or recovering from surgeries a speedy recovery. Joe LiPuma has fallen twice due to getting dizzy and fainting. He has gone to the doctor and tests were run and they are waiting for the results. June Lipuma had rotator cup surgery and is doing well although there is a 6-12 month recovery period. Joyce Peluso has fully recovered. Richard Helms is recovering well from his knee replacement and is using a cane now to get around. Mary Everett who had eye surgery is completely recovered and has no side effects.

45 Years in the Making

It was the late 60’s and Bill Brown was looking for a “project car”. He had always enjoyed working on cars and after discussions with his wife Sue they decided to look for a Classic Thunderbird. They found a Starmist Blue 1957 to purchase and promptly thereafter joined the Classic Thunderbird Club International.
They enjoyed the CTCI newsletter, The Early Bird, and Bill contacted CTCI headquarters to inquire about purchasing the back issues, which included a lot of technical advice that he was going to need on this restoration. Since CTCI didn’t have the back issues they came to an agreement with Bill, who obtained the plates from CTCI and had the issues reprinted. Bill and Sue then provided the reprints through the CTCI newsletter to members for purchase. This entrepreneurial pursuit eventually evolved into remaking parts and advertising those in the “Early Bird” as well.
After a few years this hobby-turned-business had taken over much of the house. The parts inventory and order processing had taken over the basement. The glass cutting and finishing was housed in the garage, and parts were made in various locations, including some being baked in Sue’s oven. So the Browns began to look for a permanent location for the parts business. Bill found an old lumberyard that had buildings for sale and decided that would be a good fit for the business. Across the town they moved to what remains today to be the home of CASCO.
Three years after moving to the new location, the Browns decided to open a restoration facility in conjunction with the T-Bird parts business. Customers were excited to have a specialized shop to bring their Thunderbirds. The addition of the restoration shop also enabled the manufacturing part of the business to have ready access to a place to test and fit parts at all times. Classic Auto became “The Specialists” for the Thunderbird hobby. A
technical help phone line was added and continues to be a popular source for hobbyists all over the world to call for help on their Classic T-Bird. CASCO Restorations is a great source for vehicle service and technical guidance for hobbyists and professionals alike.
In the late 1990’s, Bill & Sue were excited to welcome their son, Jim, back to the family business. Jim had graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in mechanical engineering and was working for a company specializing in plastic injection molding, but was ready to move back to his hometown of Coshocton, Ohio. Jim moved right in and continued to expand the machine shop and manufacturing arena of the business as well as the “reverse engineering” of many much-needed reproduction parts. A few years later Jim’s wife Betsy joined the business to complete the “family” aspect of the business.
Over the years, CASCO had continued to strive to improve the quality of parts on the market for the little T-Birds. The machine shop has grown to include welders, presses, powder coating, lathes, exhaust benders, CNC turning, CNC water-jet cutting, CNC tube bending, and much more. Taking on new products often requires purchases of additional machines and tooling which add even more to the shop’s capabilities and product development. Recent upgrades to the business also include a new and more customer-service oriented computer software system which has led to introduction of the CASCO Loyalty Rewards Program, in which customers accumulate reward points on every part purchased which can then be redeemed for dollars off a parts order.
This year Classic Auto Supply is celebrating 45 years of serving as Thunderbird Specialists for the Classic T-Bird hobby. Bill & Sue are now retired and enjoying their time with grandkids and other hobbies. Jim, Betsy and CASCO’s team continue striving to maintain the excellent quality parts and service for which the business has been known since its inception in 1969. If you are in the East Central Ohio area, look them up and they will be happy to give you the nickel tour!

I feel like it is my duty as an owner of a trio of
classic cars to share them with kids whenever I
can. I let them sit in the driver’s seat, play with
the steering wheel, and even give them rides.
My neighbors’ kids will often find “Mr. Chris”
working on his Tbird in the garage and I always
take the time to show off what I am working on.
Lastly, we should get those cars out of the
garage so people can enjoy them. Who knows,
maybe you’ll be the spark to pass along the car
hobby to a youngster. A great chance to show
off your beautiful Tbirds will be at this year’s 4th
of July Parade in Lake Forest. I’m hoping to
have our ’57, endearingly named “Grace”,
running by then to lead the pack!

Make Your Home Safer
Remove hazards that increase the chance for falling, such as rugs, loose cords, and objects on the floor.
Check or change the batteries on your carbon monoxide alarm at least twice a year.
Test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they work properly. For smoke alarms that use regular alkaline batteries, replace the batteries at least once a year. For smoke alarms that use lithium (long-life) batteries, replace the
entire alarm unit every 10 years or sooner if it chirps or stops working.
Keep cooking areas free of flammable objects, such as potholders and towels.
Keep candles, medicine, household cleaners, and other chemicals out of children’s reach, in locked or child-proof cabinets.
Don’t use a gasoline or charcoal-burning device near a window, door, or vent, or inside your home, basement, or garage.
Test your home for radon (a radioactive gas linked to lung cancer). You can purchase a kit at your local hardware or home improvement store. If testing shows levels higher than 4 pCi/L, seal or vent your basement or crawl space under your house, and monitor your radon levels to make sure they lessen.
Make your home smoke-free.
Keep medicines in their original bottles or containers.

The Classic Thunderbird Club International is hosting the 2014 International Convention in Springfield, Missouri from July 1-6, 2014. The University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center on Route 66 will be our home for the convention. INDOOR CONCOURS will be held in the Expo Center across the street from the hotel. Rain or shine you will be in air conditioned comfort.
TOURS include a Thursday dinner cruise on the Branson Showboat Belle in Branson, MO. Hop on the bus and enjoy the ride to Branson and the show. Ladies, a shopping trip to Branson Landing on Friday. 100+ shops, restaurants, water fountain spectacular every hour on the hour beginning at noon. Our bus will take you to the shops. Friday night will be the "Cruise In" to “Cruisin USA”. We will join other car clubs on the parking lot for food, fun and tire kicking! Fantastic caverns, a ride through cavern in a jeep drawn tram, no walking on uneven ground and 60 degrees year round. This is the Saturday morning driving tour for 10 extra points for the Touring Class T-Birds. Bus ride will also be available.
AWARDS BANQUET on Saturday night. Good food, great T-Bird friends, awards and a table centerpiece you may just be lucky enough to win. The hotel price includes a buffet breakfast, that's right, a free buffet breakfast!! The hotel will also provide hospitality snacks in the Atrium during the day. USING THE RIGHT GASKET SEALANTS

With the varied composition of gaskets available on the market today, it is important that you use the proper sealant to ensure the gaskets seal effectively and not adversely affect the gaskets’ longevity. In many cases, using the correct sealant will actually extend the life of the gasket because it offers protection from engine heat as well as resistance to corrosive chemicals found in oils, fuels and other fluids that can cause the gasket to deteriorate over time.
There are literally thousands of sealants available on today’s market, and we are not recommending one brand over another, but certainly Permatex is an industry leader, and many of the product characteristics for each type of sealant reflect equivalency to the Permatex standards, so we will use their standards as a guide. A careful examination of

what each category of sealants does and doesn’t do should point you in the right direction when deciding which type of sealant you should use. Here are just a few of the basic groups of sealants enthusiasts should have on hand when tackling an engine, transmission, differential or minor repair. Shellac - Often referred to as Indian Head after the Permatex product. Shellac is ideal for thin paper or cardboard gaskets that are mounted in a low temperature and/or low pressure environment. It should not be used in temperatures higher than 300 to 350 degrees. Resistant to engine fluids, its most common uses are in mounting thermostat, timing cover or differential cover gaskets. They are not resistant to many shop chemicals, thankfully, because they can be a real bear to clean off, if necessary in the future. High Tack - Available in brush-top bottle or in tubes, High Tack is a non-drying gasket sealant that can be used in similar applications to shellac, but can sustain temperatures of up to 500 degrees. It remains tacky and also resists kerosene, propane and diesel fuels.

USING THE RIGHT GASKET SEALANTS
Form-a-gasket sealers - These are available in several types: fast drying, fast hardening (usually called #1); slow drying, non-hardening (usually called #2); brushable slow drying, non-hardening (usually referred to as aviation or #3). All three form-a-gasket sealers are rated to 400 degrees, but each serves a slightly different purpose. Number 1 is most often used in applications you hope to never have to deal with again. It is often used to install block expansion plugs, threaded connections and to seal between metal-to-metal flanges. Number 2 sealants work best on cork gaskets or paper oil pan gaskets. Because they are non-hardening, clean-up is much easier when resealing is eventually needed. They are often used on neoprene transmission pan gaskets as well. Aviation form-a-gasket has the advantage of being brushable, so you can lay on a thin or thick coat to seal metal flanges, machined surfaces and solid gaskets. It works well for sealing hose connections because it is fuel and oil-resistant. It is also non-hardening for ease of resealing. Copper gasket sealant - Available both in brushable and in aerosol forms, copper gasket sealer is fast-drying, and the metal content suspended within the sealant helps to dissipate heat and promote even heat transfer between the mating surfaces. It can also be used to fill small imperfections in the metal surfaces, promoting a more positive seal. Rated for up to 500 degrees, copper gasket sealant is best suited for cylinder head and exhaust manifold gaskets. It is also very easy to clean, even after extended periods of time. Anaerobic sealers - Usually in a tube and red in color, anaerobic sealers are designed to be used in applications where outside air is not available to help the drying process. They were created to meet OE manufacturers’ requirements for a non-corrosive gasket maker in metal-to-metal applications. Anaerobic sealers are good for side-of-the-road leak
repairs or for places where there never has been a gasket or the replacement gasket is no longer available. Anaerobic sealers will also fill small imperfections in mating surfaces.
RTV Silicone Sealers - Available in about a dozen different colors and spreadable via tubes, aerosol cheese-whiz-type cans or even in caulk-gun cartridges, Room Temperature Volatile silicone is effective as a gasket sealer as well as a gasket by itself. Temperature ratings and individual properties are available on a chart on the Permatex website (see below). Basically, for applications up to 500 degrees, blue, black and grey are recommended. For up to 650 degrees, orange or red are recommended, and copper is good for temperatures up to 750 degrees. Whenever faced with a choice between a conventional RTV and an “Ultra” RTV, you should also consider that the Ultra products are sensor-safe for newer electronic-controlled vehicles.
Hylomar - This is a relatively new product in the aftermarket but has been used by many OE manufacturers for almost 30 years. It is a polyester urethane-based gasket compound that withstands temperatures of up to 500 degrees without hardening. It’s non-setting and remains tacky, making repeated disassembly and re-assembly much easier for racing applications where constant adjustments under the hood are necessary. It can be used as a gasket sealer or in place of a gasket. New York Statutes designate the second Sunday in June as Flag Day, a state holiday. Perhaps the oldest continuing Flag Day parade
is at Fairfield, Washington. Beginning in 1909 or 1910, Fairfield has held a parade every year since, with the possible exception of 1918, and celebrated the "Centennial" parade in 2010, along with some other commemorative events. Quincy, Massachusetts has had an annual Flag Day parade since 1952 and claims it "is the longest-running parade of its kind in the nation."[7] The largest Flag Day parade is held annually in Troy, New York, which bases its parade on the Quincy parade and typically draws 50,000 spectators.
Parade Check-in 1. The parade officials would like us to check in
between 8:00 & 9:30AM.
2. We are to be at the assembly point no later than
9:30 AM.
3. The staging area is at Ridge Route near Jeronimo
the start of the parade is at El Toro High School
located on Toledo Way.
4. We are to enter the staging area which starts Ridge
Route just east of Jeronimo.
Parade Route 1. The parade starts in the intersection of Ridge Route
and Toledo Way. 2. Follow Toledo Way and turn right on Lake Forest
Drive. 3. From Lake Forest Drive, turn right onto Serrano
Road. 4. Once you reach Ridge Route, you will step off of
the parade route. Turn right onto Ridge Route and turn left into El Toro High School parking lot to begin unloading.
5. The parade route is about 1 ½ miles long.
6. It is important to continue moving along Ridge Route and into the high school parking lot before unloading from an entry. This way we can ensure the safety of all participants and observers.

Parade to attend. We will be attending the 23rd Annual 4th of July Parade at Lake Forest. Of course the parade will be on the 4th of July. Those who will be in the parade will meet in the Walgreens Pharmacy parking lot located at 24382 Muirlands Blvd. and caravan to the parade route. After the parade we will again caravan back to Chris & Katie Pond’s home for the clubs 4th of July party. For party information please see the flyer on page 8 in this issue.

We will then proceed east to Toledo Way where the start of the parade begins at El Toro High School. The plan is to depart the Walgreens Pharmacy parking lot 8:30 AM at the latest so we can caravan there together. The parade will last about an hour. This will give us plenty of time for those who wish to decorate their cars.

The July Club event will once again take place on July 4th at the home of our President Chris Pond. The party will start at 2:30 PM or when we get back from the parade.
All Club members are asked to RSVP to Chris and Katie on or after June 1st but before July 1st. Please bring an appetizer, salad or a dessert to share. Appetizers are preferred as last year we had too many desserts. However I do know someone who is very into desserts and was very happy with the overabundance. We have broken the needs down as follows: If your last name starts with A-H; please bring a salad, I-O please bring a dessert; P-Z please bring an appetizer. The club will provide the main course of hamburgers and hot dogs, buns, all the condiments, soft drinks, water and the like.
