Some people do not go to the doctor out of fear of what the doctor might find.
Professional counsel ing is sometimes avoided because of worry about what might
be uncovered. Newspapers go unread and television news is not watched in order to
steer clear of bad news. Some folks wi l l not even look in the mirror, afraid of what
they might see. Because of an unwi l l ingness to look at what is real ly going on, there
could be much in our l ives that is going unrecognized.
Jesus knew wel l our reluctance to take an honest look at ourselves, so he says, ?Why do you notice the spl inter
in your brother?s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?" (Luke 6:39-45) In other words, from
time to t ime, i t is important to take a look at what is going unnoticed in our l ives. Health professionals tel ls us
early detection of an i l lness is the key to better health and perhaps even a cure. There may be things in our
l ives that we are not detecting, that, i f not recognized, could bring great harm to ourselves or others.
What is going unrecognized in our l ives that needs to be looked at? In our relat ionships wi th others, what
might we be denying because i t is too painful to acknowledge? What issues are we sk i r t ing or protecting
ourselves from because they seem too threatening to take on? What obstacles might be creating a distance
between us and God? Where might we need reconci l iat ion?
Sirach says, ?The frui t of a tree shows the care i t has had." (Si rach 27:4-7) How are we caring for ourselves
physical ly, emotional ly, spi ri tual ly? What is feeding these l ives God has given to us? Lent begins on Ash
Wednesday this coming week. This Lent can be a t ime of look ing at what may be going unrecognized in our
l ives. It is an opportuni ty for us to feed and care for the trees of our l ives. Part icipation in the many Lenten
activi t ies avai lable in the parish could provide just that opportuni ty for our l ives to be nourished.
Removing the wooden beams of what we have been afraid of seeing could be the
beginning of l ives that flourish l ike beauti ful trees which have been wel l cared for.

Algunas personas no acuden al médico por temor a lo que el médico pueda
encontrar. En ocasiones, se evi ta el asesoramiento profesional debido a la
preocupación por lo que podría descubri rse. Los periódicos no se leen y las
noticias de televisión no se ven para evi tar las malas noticias. Algunas personas
ni siquiera se miran en el espejo, temerosas de lo que puedan ver. Debido a la fal ta
de voluntad para ver lo que realmente está sucediendo, podría haber muchas
cosas en nuestras vidas que no se reconozcan.
Jesús conocía bien nuestra resistencia a mirarnos a nosotros mismos de manera honesta, por lo que dice:
"¿Por qué notas la asti l la en el ojo de tu hermano, pero no percibes la viga de madera en los tuyos (Lucas 6:
39-45)?" En otras palabras, de vez en cuando, es importante ver lo que pasa inadvert ido en nuestras vidas.
Los profesionales de salud nos dicen que la detección temprana de una enfermedad es la clave para una
mejor salud y quizás incluso una cura. Puede haber cosas en nuestras vidas que no estamos detectando, que,
si no se reconocen, podrían causar un gran daño a nosotros mismos o a los demás.
¿Qué es lo que no se reconoce en nuestras vidas que debe ser examinado? En nuestras relaciones con los
demás, ¿qué podríamos estar negando porque es demasiado doloroso de reconocer? ¿De qué problemas nos
estamos rodeando o protegiendo porque parecen demasiados para enfrentar? ¿Qué obstáculos podrían estar
creando una distancia entre nosotros y Dios? ¿Dónde podríamos necesi tar la reconci l iación?
Sirach dice: "El fruto de un árbol muestra el cuidado que se le ha dado (Si rach 27: 4-7)". ¿Cómo nos estamos
cuidamos física, emocionalmente, espi ri tualmente? ¿Qué está al imentando estas vidas que Dios nos ha
dado? La Cuaresma comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza de esta semana. Esta Cuaresma puede ser un momento
de mirar lo que puede pasar desapercibido en nuestras vidas. Es una oportunidad para nosotros poder
al imentar y cuidar los árboles de nuestras vidas. Nuestra part icipación en las muchas actividades de
Cuaresma disponibles en la parroquia podría brindar precisamente esa oportunidad
para que nuestras vidas necesi ten para ser nutridas.
El iminar las vigas de madera de lo que hemos temido ver, podría ser el comienzo de
vidas que florecen como hermosos árboles que han sido bien cuidados.
